Weekly Sports Update - April 26, 2013

Baseball (10-23/5-10 SUNYAC)
 
Apr. 20th at Cortland, L 2-8; L 2-7
Apr. 21st at Cortland, L 0-9
Apr. 23rd vs. Ithaca, L 3-6
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team scored three runs in the ninth inning, but came up short last Tuesday at home to Ithaca College 6-3. 

Ithaca scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.  In the third inning, Ithaca benefitted from an error that allowed the lead off to reach to start the inning.  The base runner went to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored an unearned run on a wild pitch.

After a single run in the fifth inning gave the Bombers a 3-0 lead, they tacked on three more in the sixth to increase its lead to 6-0. 

In the bottom of the ninth, Oneonta took advantage of three walks and a hit batsman to account for its runs.  Senior Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) drove in one run on a ground out while Chris Romano (Mahopac/Mahopac) and Jake Robinson (Oyster Bay/Oyster Bay) walked to drive in the other two runs.

Sophomore Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) pitched four innings for Oneonta and took the loss.  He allowed three hits and one earned run.
 
Apr. 24th vs. New Paltz, L 0-1
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team travelled to Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam last Wednesday to play SUNY New Paltz in a game that was suspended as part of doubleheader the previous week due to torrential rain. The Hawks pulled out a 1-0 victory, scoring in the top of the ninth.
 
In eight innings of flawless action, both teams had runners in scoring positions in two different innings.  New Paltz put runners on the bases in the fourth and again in the fifth. In the fifth, the third out was a picture perfect play as Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central) picked up the ball in right field and relayed it to the Robinson, the second baseman, who threw it the catcher, Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville), for the tag at the plate.
 
Oneonta had an opportunity in the sixth with an Ivan Plata double to right center with only one out, but was unable to be hit home. 
 
The Hawks would take advantage of a fielding error to score the only run of the game. After a single, and with two outs, the next batter would reach via the error moving the runner to third. He later scored off a single to center field.
 
The Red Dragons had one last try as Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) doubled to center with two outs.
 
Benji Parkes (Lansing/Lansing) moves to 2-3 with the loss after a five hit, two strikeout appearance.
 
Softball (8-24/4-12)

Apr. 23rd vs. Alfred, L 8-12; L 4-5
The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped two games of a doubleheader last Tuesday afternoon to visiting Alfred University. The Red Dragons fell in game 1, 12-8 and then lost the second game 5-4.
 
Oneonta had the lead in both games after the bottom of the fifth inning, but was unable to maintain it. After falling behind in game 1 in the first inning, Oneonta answered back with a run of their own. Junior Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag/Arlington) doubled to left field and moved to third on a ground out by Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland). Kendziera would score on a passed ball to tie the game at 1 apiece.
 
Alfred would score two in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
 
The Red Dragons responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kendziera got aboard via a walk and Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) moved her to second with a bunt. Rivera singled through the right side and Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) loaded the bases with the second walk of the inning. Freshman Cassandra Kohler (Walden/Valley Central) stepped to the plate and hit a bomb over the left field fence for a grand slam to give Oneonta a 5-3 lead.
 
The lead was short lived as the Saxons tied the game once again at 5-5. Alfred would take the lead 8-5 in the fifth before Oneonta scored three runs of their own to tie the score at 8-8.
 
Rivera started the inning off with a double to right center and scored on a Kohler single. Kohler would move to second on the throw home. After a Deso single. Kohler scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park) hit Deso home with a double to left field.
 
Two runs in both the top of the sixth and seventh would secure the victory for Alfred.
 
Kohler, Kendziera and Deso each had two hits in game 1.
 
In game 2, Oneonta took the lead after the first inning, 2-1. Junior Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) got on the base path with a single to left center. Two fielding errors allowed Rivera and Deso to reach base and plate the two runs.
 
Alfred would tie the game at 2-2 before Oneonta took a 4-2 lead after the fifth. Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River) started the inning off after being hit by the pitch and moved to second on a Kendziera bunt. Kohler singled to right center, scoring Mahoney. After a Rivera single moved Kohler to third, Deso would hit her home with a single of her own.
 
Alfred would not go quietly as they entered their last at-bats down 2. Two walks put runners in scoring position. A single scored the first run and a double plated the last two including the winning run.
 
Men’s Lacrosse (3-10/1-4 SUNYAC)
 
Apr. 20th at Oswego, L 10-15
The SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team travelled to SUNY Oswego last Saturday for SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons fell to the Lakers 15-10.
 
Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) led the attack for the Red Dragons, which included five goals. Devon Casey (Garden City,/Kellenberg) would add two goals and an assist.
 
Oneonta started the game off scoring the first two goals. Stern scored just eight seconds into the game on an assist by Keith McNierney (Commack/Commack). Casey followed suit with a goal of his own about 2 minutes later. 
 
Oswego answered with three of their own before Casey tied the game up off an assist by Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley). The Lakers would score two more and a final one with eight second left in the quarter to take a 6-4 lead into the first period break.
 
The Red Dragons trailed at the halftime break 10-5. Oneonta would get as close as a four goal gap three different times.
 
Oneonta outshot the Lakers 36-31, but Oswego had a 26-21 advantage with shots on goal.
 
Women’s Lacrosse (8-8/3-4 SUNYAC)
 
Apr. 20th vs. Geneseo, L 11-18
The visiting SUNY Geneseo Blue Knights raced to a 13-4 first half lead en route to an 18-11 road win over host SUNY Oneonta last Saturday in SUNYAC action.  The win for Geneseo was a key victory as the two squads battle for the final two spots in the conference tournament.


Geneseo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a free position shot just 33 seconds into the match. 

Junior Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) tied the score at one apiece less than one minute later with an unassisted goal.  Collins finished the game with three points, as she added two assists in the second half.

The Blue Knights broke the game open with six unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Oneonta scored the opening two goals of the second half to cut Geneseo's lead to 13-6, but the Blue Knights ran off five straight goals to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Frankie Wilson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) took the loss in goal for Oneonta, as she made only four saves while allowing 11 goals before being lifted in the first half.
 
Apr. 23rd vs. Scranton, L 12-16
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team closed out the home portion of its 2013 schedule last Tuesday evening with a 16-12 loss to Scranton.  The visitors jumped out to an 11-6 halftime lead and held off a late charge by the Red Dragons.

After sophomore Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead 31 seconds into the contest, the Royals scored four unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. 

The Red Dragons got as close as two goals twice during the opening half.  They trailed 5-3 and 7-5 before Scranton opened up a comfortable lead going into halftime.  Three of Oneonta's first half goals were scored on free position shots by Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip), Collins and Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy).

Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa), Collins and Tulley scored unanswered goals to start the second half to cut the Scranton lead back to a pair of goals at 11-9.  A free position goal by sophomore Nikki Fioretti got Oneonta back to 12-10, but that was as close as the Red Dragons would be for the remainder of the game.

Boylan and Tulley shared high point honors with four each.  Boylan led the Red Dragons with three goals while Tulley, Collins and McNally each had two goals.
 
Men’s Track & Field
 
Apr. 19th & 20th at SUNY Cortland Classic
More records fell this past weekend, as the SUNY Oneonta track & field teams competed at the SUNY Cortland Classic.  Friday's thunderstorms and heavy rain moved most of the meet to Saturday, but that didn't seem to affect Oneonta, as they continue to prepare for the SUNYAC championship meet on May 3-4 at Cortland.
 
It was seniors Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Dustin Cox (Pulaski/Pulaski) along with freshman Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) that had record setting days.

Bernstein ran a school record time of 10.43 in the 100m dash.  His time is currently the second fastest time of the season in Division III.

Competing for the first time in the decathlon, Cox recorded a school record 5794 points in finishing third overall in the event.  He went 400 points better than the previous mark, which was set in 2007.

Alviene broke the school record in the 110m high hurdles event by nearly two-tenths of a second.  He ran a time of 15.16 during the preliminaries of the event.
 
Women’s Track & Field
 
Apr. 19th & 20th at SUNY Cortland Classic
More records fell this past weekend, as the SUNY Oneonta track & field teams competed at the SUNY Cortland Classic.  Friday's thunderstorms and heavy rain moved most of the meet to Saturday, but that didn't seem to affect Oneonta, as they continue to prepare for the SUNYAC championship meet on May 3-4 at Cortland.
 
Highlighting last weekend's competition was the performance of the multi-event athletes, as they got their first opportunity to compete this spring.  It was senior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) that turned in a record setting performance in winning the Heptathlon with a score of 4349.  Her score was good enough to hit the ECAC qualifying mark while putting her ninth on the NCAA Div. III performance list in the event.

During her two-day competition, she also set a new school record in the shot put (11.65m) while qualifying for the ECAC in that event as well as the Javelin (36.39) and high jump (1.63m).

The other school record on the women's side came in the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:58.53, which was also good enough to reach the ECAC qualifying mark in the event.  The foursome included senior Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville/Arlington) and sophomores Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea), Mariel Doyle (Delmar/Bethlehem) and Nicole Lucia Moneta (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North).
