Baseball (10-18/5-6 SUNYAC)
Apr. 13th vs. Oswego, L 1-6
Oswego's pitcher threw a complete game, two-hitter last Saturday, as the Lakers defeated SUNY Oneonta, 6-1 in SUNYAC action.
Oswego scored a single run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Lakers tacked on three more runs in the second inning, two of which were unearned.
Oswego's final runs came in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Oneonta's lone run of the game came in the eighth inning with two outs. Sophomore
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach/Long Beach) was hit by a pitch and then went to second on a single by senior
Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) to start the inning. Senior
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) walked to load the bases before a fielding error by the shortstop allowed Stamile to score from third base. The inning ended with a fly out to right field by
Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley).
Sophomore
Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) took the loss for Oneonta today, as he fell to 3-3 on the season. Ascher allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while recording five strikeouts.
Apr. 14th vs. Oswego, L, 1-13; L 5-6 (13)
A RBI single down the left field line in the bottom of the 13th inning to drove in the winning run, as the visiting Oswego Lakers won, 6-5 to complete the sweep of SUNY Oneonta last Sunday in SUNYAC action.
Oneonta had an opportunity to go ahead in the top of the 13th with a runner 90 feet away, but couldn't get him home. Sophomore
Jake Robinson (Oyster Bay/Oyster Bay) led off the inning with a double to left center and then was sacrificed to third by
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island). After a ground out to the pitcher by
Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central), the next two batters were hit to load the bases. The final out came on the force play at third base.
Oswego jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in this one. Tim Smith had an RBI single in the first inning while Stark and Scott Buniak had RBI singles in the second inning.
The Red Dragons got two runs back in their at-bat in the third inning. With runners at second and third,
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) drilled a double to left field to drive in seniors
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) and Haussel.
Oswego added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go back ahead by three runs. Oneonta intentionally walked Mike McMullen to load the bases with one out. The next batter was Brian Hamilton and he made Oneonta pay with a two-run single to left field that scored Buniak and Smith.
Oneonta came right back in their half of the sixth inning to close the gap back to one run with two runs of their own. Massaroni hit his second straight double to start the inning, which was followed by an RBI single by
Orlando. With two outs and Orlando on second, sophomore
Stamile hit a single up the middle to drive in Orlando.
In the eighth inning, the Red Dragons struck again with two outs to tie the game. They were aided by a throwing error by Stark, which allowed Stamile to reach and Orlando to score from second base. Orlando singled to start the inning before being moved over to second by Salvatore.
Relief pitchers then took control of the game, as Oswego’s and
JJim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) for Oneonta pitched the game to the 13th.
Hegmann had been cruising along after entering the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. He allowed only four hits while striking out two batters.
Massaroni and Orlando had two hits each for Oneonta.
In the first game of the day, Oswego jumped out to an 11-0 lead after three innings en route to a 13-1 rout. Oswego scored eight runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three Oneonta errors.
Apr. 16th vs. New Paltz, W 1-0
Through a steady, drenching rain, the SUNY Oneonta baseball team pulled out a 1-0 win against visiting SUNY New Paltz last Tuesday in SUNYAC action. Freshman
Benji Parkes (Lansing/Lansing) went the distance to record his first collegiate shutout while evening his record at 2-2. Parkes scattered four hits and registered four strikeouts, as the Red Dragons picked up a key conference win, as they make a push to qualify for the SUNYAC tournament with seven games remaining in its conference schedule.
Both Parkes and the Hawks’ pitcher cruised through the first four innings with neither team threatening.
The lone run of the contest came in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out. Senior
Salvatore singled to leadoff the inning and moved to second base on a ground out by classmate
Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic) to the second baseman. The next batter was senior
Hand, who drilled a single to center field, which scored Salvatore from second.
Softball (8-18/4-8 SUNYAC)
Apr. 13th vs. Geneseo, L 2-14 (6); L 4-5
The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped a pair of games last Saturday to SUNY Geneseo which included a seventh inning rally in game 2, falling short 5-4. Game 1 went the way of the Knights 14-2.
Geneseo (jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning in game 2. Four hits and three errors by the Red Dragons, allowed the runs to score.
Oneonta would not go quietly as they answered with one run in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag/Arlington) singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River). Senior
Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie) hit her team leading seventh double of the season to score Kendziera to close the gap to 4-1.
The Knights tacked on a fifth run in the fourth inning.
Deso started the seventh inning rally off with a walk.
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) belted her third home run of the season over the left field fence to pull the Red Dragons to within 2.
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) beat out a single to the second baseman and
Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) doubled down the left field line to put runners in scoring position. After Geneseo changed pitchers,
Laura Campbell (Cold Spring/Haldane) laid down a perfectly placed bunt single to plate the fourth run. The Knights were able to get the next two batters to strike out and pop out to preserve the victory.
In game 1, Oneonta took a 2-1 advantage after two innings of play. The lead didn't last long as Geneseo scored a single run in the top of the third to tie the game at 2. The Knights broke the game open in the fourth scoring 2 and plated 5 runners in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the victory 14-2.
Kendziera started the Red Dragons off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a bunt single by
Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis/Port Jervis). Rivera followed with a single to center field scoring Kendziera.
Hunter Bassett (Granville/Granville) got the Red Dragons going in the second inning with a single through the left side. She was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice on
Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park)'s hit. Brieva came home after a fielding error on a Kendziera single.
Kendziera was 4-for-6 on the afternoon and Rivera was 4-for-7. Marzillo added two runs batted in in the second game.
Apr. 14th vs. Brockport, L 4-10; W 5-4
The SUNY Oneonta softball team rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 5-4 and upend the Golden Eagles in game 2 of last Sunday’s doubleheader. The win improves the Red Dragons to 8-18 overall and 4-8 in the SUNYAC.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Red Dragons took the lead 2-1 after the second inning. Freshman
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) doubled to right center to get the Oneonta started. With two outs,
L. Campbell doubled to left center to drive in Lichtenstein from second base.
Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River) reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher allowing Campbell to score.
Brockport tied the game in the third and eventually took the lead 4-2 after the top of the fifth.
Oneonta would not go away as they added a single run in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of Brockport's third error in the game.
Mahoney came into pinch run for Lichtenstein after she singled. Mahoney would score on the fielding error by the second baseman to cut the lead to 4-3.
The bottom of the sixth began on a
Kendziera line shot back up the middle. Freshman
Whittam stepped to the plate and belted a double to right center with Deso following with a deep single to score Kendziera. Whittam crossed the plate to give the Red Dragons the lead on a
Marzillo ground out back to the pitcher as Deso got herself into a run down between first and second.
The 5-4 lead was all starting pitcher
Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) needed as she threw the first batter out on a hit back to her. After a single up the middle, Hitt was able to get the next two batters to line out and pop out to end the game. She allowed 7 hits and struck out four batters to earn her fourth win of the season in going the distance.
Deso, Lichtenstein and Campbell each had a pair of hits in the game.
In game 1, Brockport got off to an early start scoring three runs in the first.
The Golden Eagles would go up 6-2 after the third inning, scoring three more.
Oneonta cut the lead to 6-4, scoring 2 in both the third and fourth innings. Kendziera and Whittam each scored on a Marzillo double to deep right center in the third inning. In the fourth,
Bassett scored on a single by
Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River). O'Flynn later scored when the left fielder was unable to cleanly handle a hard grounder hit in her direction.
It was as close as Oneonta would get as the Golden Eagles shut them out, scoring 1 in the fifth and 3 in the seventh to take the 10-4 victory.
Brockport out hit the Red Dragons in game 1, 13-6. The two teams switched places in game 2 as Oneonta had 11-7 advantage in hits.
Men’s Lacrosse (3-9/1-3 SUNYAC)
Apr. 13th vs. Potsdam, W 5-4
There were a total of nine goals scored last Saturday, but it was the host SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team that came out with a hard fought, 5-4 victory against visiting SUNY Potsdam in SUNYAC action. scored three goals in the first period and two in the third period, as they grinded out a key win in the conference playoff race on senior day.
Senior
Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) scored a pair of goals in the opening quarter while freshman
Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg) added two assists in helping Oneonta gain a 3-1 lead after the first period.
A pair of goals got Potsdam back to 3-3 going into halftime.
The final goals of the game would come in the third period with Oneonta scoring two of the three goals in the quarter. Freshman
Josh Heller (Plainview/Plainview JFK) gave the Red Dragons a 4-3 lead midway through the quarter before Jared Flath tied the game with an unassisted goal less than one minute later.
The game-winning goal would come from Casey who tallied an unassisted goal with 5:24 remaining in the third period.
Both goalies were solid between the pipes. Senior
Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) registered 12 saves for Oneonta.
Women’s Lacrosse (8-6/3-3 SUNYAC)
Apr. 13th vs. Fredonia, L 10-11
In a game between two evenly matched squads, it was Fredonia that took a one-goal victory last Saturday over SUNY Oneonta 11-10. The Red Dragons closed to within one-goal with just under two minutes to go, but couldn't come all the way back.
Neither team had more than a one-goal lead until three straight goals by the Blue Devils gave them an 11-9 lead with 4:36 left in regulation.
Senior
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) notched her 40th goal of the season in bringing the Red Dragons to within one goal with 1:54 to go in the contest.
After an Oneonta timeout, the Red Dragons controlled the ensuing draw and worked it for a shot, which hit the post by
Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East). Collins picked up the ground ball, but the ball was turned over by
Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa) and was picked up by Fredonia, who ran the final 42 seconds off the clock.
Oneonta held a 5-4 advantage at halftime thanks to three goals by sophomore
Nicole Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown).
Apr. 16th vs. New Paltz, W 19-8
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse had nine players score at least one goal en route to a 19-8 victory at home over New Paltz in SUNYAC action this afternoon. Sophomores
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) and
Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) led the Red Dragons with 6 and 5 goals respectively.
Oneonta would take the lead three different times in the opening fifteen minutes of play, but New Paltz would answer right back to tie the game.
Collins got Oneonta on the board just over one minute into play on an unassisted goal and New Paltz responded with a goal 40 seconds later. The pattern continued as McNally scored her first of the afternoon and the Hawk’s answered right back. A pair of goals by Donodeo game the Red Dragons a 4-2 advantage. Goals 10 seconds apart tied the game once again at 4-4.
The Red Dragons finally broke the game open, rattling off five unanswered goals in a ten-minute span to take a 9-4 lead. McNally had two of her six during this time.
Fioretti, Tulley and Donodeo scored the other three.
Boylan closed out the first half with an unassisted goal to give Oneonta a 10-5 lead at the halftime break.
The second half saw much of the same domination as the first with Oneonta scoring nine more goals.
Allison McClain (Wantagh/Wantagh),
Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip) and
Randal Cook (Northport/Northport) each had goals in the half to provide the offensive fire power for the Red Dragons.
Collins dished out 4 assists, two from behind the goal, and Tulley upped her team lead to 27 with 2 more in the game. Oneonta finished with a 39-15 advantage in shots and doubled up the Hawks in ground balls, 43-21.
Men’s Track & Field
Apr. 13th at Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell
Apr. 13th at Upstate Classic at Rensselaer
The SUNY Oneonta men’s track and field team continued its spring dominance this past Saturday at two different sites. Most of the men competed at the Upstate Track Classic hosted by Rensselaer while a handful of competitors travelled to Bucknell to compete in the Bison Outdoor Classic. The Red Dragons continued to dominate in the springs and the throws while the middle and distance runners turned in many personal best marks.
All the men did at Bucknell was set a school record, twice, while recording 11 personal best marks. The highlight event was the 5000m run where the men were a perfect 6-for-6 in personal best marks while recording a school record in the event in consecutive heats.
Freshman
Jim Bernstein (Grahamsville/Tri-Valley) celebrated his birthday with a school record time in the event of 15:08.96. Unfortunately the record only stood for about 20 minutes, as in the next heat, sophomore
Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru) ran a time of 15:04.36 to break Bernstein's mark. Both were huge personal best times for each.
Junior Mitchell Todorov (15:42.30), graduate student
Matt Laroe (Sugar Loaf/Warwick Valley) (15:34.58) and sophomores
Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) (15:20.57) and
Andrew Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) (15:19.93) all recorded personal best marks in the event for Oneonta.
The Red Dragons had four runners record personal best times in the 1500m run led by senior
Nate Weber (LaFayette/Tully), who crossed the line in a time of 4:00.06, which put him in the top-5 all time for the program. The group was rounded out by a trio of sophomores in
David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) (4:04.74),
Jay Berube (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) (4:05.53) and
Bobby Gallant (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) (4:06.46).
Seniors
Chris Harvey (Kings Park/Kings Park) and
John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) each competed in the 3000m steeplechase and came away with times of 9:25.80 and 9:50.96 respectively. Harvey's time made the ECAC standard while Longo's time was a personal best mark and an ECAC qualifying mark.
The men's overall depth was in play at the Upstate Classic with school records, multiple PR's and ECAC qualifiers.
Highlighting the meet was the performance of sophomore
Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) in the hammer throw. Weinert broke the school record in the event by over one meter while qualifying for the prestigious Penn Relays next week. His throw of 54.42m (178'6”) went passed the old mark set by teammate
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) set a week ago. Weinert also placed fourth in the shot put.
Roth was runner-up in both the shot put and hammer throw. He had an ECAC qualifying mark of 14.80m (48' 6 ¾”) while recording a personal best mark in the hammer of 53.21m (174'7”).
Senior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) recorded three more wins this spring, as he captured the 100 and 200m dashes along with running a leg on the 4x100m relay that won as well. His winning time of 10.63 in the 100m is currently the fourth fastest time in Division III this spring while his 200m time of 21.29 is the second fastest time this season.
Freshmen
Steve Kuznia (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and
Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) came away with wins in the 400m hurdles and 400m run respectively. Carr ran an ECAC qualifying time of 49.92 while Kuznia remained unbeaten in the 400m hurdles this spring, winning in a time of 55.47. Kuznia also anchored the 4x400m relay to a second place finish with a 50.52 split.
Senior
Dustin Cox (Pulaski/Pulaski) won the long jump with a personal best outdoor mark of 6.52m (21' 4 ¾”). He also a season best time of 16.01 in placing third in the 110m hurdles while recording a personal best mark in the pole vault of 3.45m (11' 3 ¾”).
Sophomore
Michael Clancy (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) recorded two personal best marks on Saturday in the discus and hammer throw. He was third in the discus with a toss of 41.45m (136') and fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.77m (150'2”).
Women’s Track & Field

Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) and
Marisa Hitchcock (Cobleskill/Cobleskill-Richmondville) both recorded personal best marks in the 1500m run. Masucci crossed in 4:56.67 while Hitchcock came in at 4:58.41.
In the 3000m steeplechase, junior Alison Ryley ran an ECAC qualifying time of 11:36.49 in placing 26th overall.
Sophomore
Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) turned in the final personal best mark in the 5000m run. She recorded an ECAC qualifying time of 18:18.53 in placing 43rd overall.
Junior
Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) remained undefeated in the 100m dash, as she ran an ECAC qualifying time of 12.66 to win the event. She also ran the second leg on the 4x100m relay that remained undefeated this spring.
The other individual event winner in the meet was senior
Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville/Arlington), who won the 400m run with a time of 1:01.35.
Sophomore
Chelsea Christonikos (New City/Clarkstown South) ran a personal best time of 1:08.46 in the 400m hurdles in finishing third overall.
Freshmen
Alicia Switser (Guilderland/Guilderland) and
Kim Scofield (Oneonta/Oneonta) each recorded personal best marks in their individual events. Switser was third in the pole vault, clearing 2.95m (9'8”) while Scofield was third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.53m (34' 6 ¾”).
Senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) was runner-up in both the 100m hurdles and javelin events while placing third in the long jump.
Senior
Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) was runner-up in the hammer with a distance of 48.94m (160'7”).
Men’s Tennis (5-12)
Apr. 15th vs. Oswego, W 9-0
The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team surrendered only 15 games en route to a 9-0 shutout of visiting Oswego last Tuesday afternoon at the Dr. Joe Heissan '63 Tennis Courts. The Red Dragons bounced back in a big way from its loss at Colby College this past Saturday, as they recorded its fifth win of the 2012-13 year.
Oneonta opened the match with a sweep of doubles play. Junior
Michael Kennelly (Irvington/Irvington) and sophomore
Mackenzie Park (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) won at first doubles, 8-0, against Brian Tosti and Ben Weiss. Junior
Benjamin Leighton (Shokan/Onteora) and freshman
Daniel Kaminsky (North Bellmore/W.C. Mepham) won at second doubles, 8-1, against Tim Van Hine, Jr. and Dillon Corbett. Senior
Adam Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) and freshman
Trevor Mitchel (East Meadow/East Meadow) won at third doubles, 8-3, against Connor Rhodes and Sam Carges.
Kennelly, Park, Slifkin and Kaminsky came back to record wins in singles play. Sophomore
Jordan Reiley (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) and junior
Ryohei Nakamura (Fukuoka, Japan/Kasumigaoka Senior High School) won at fifth and sixth singles in straight sets.
