Men’s Track & Field

Mar. 2nd at ECAC Championships, 3rd place with 46 points
A week after winning its first SUNYAC indoor track & field championship, the SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team had its highest finish ever at the ECAC championships, finishing third with 46 points last Friday and Saturday.  In all, the Red Dragons earned seven individual and two relay All-ECAC honors while setting two school records.

Leading the way during the two-day event held at the Armory in New York City, were throwers J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet), Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) and Joe Fox (West Nyack/Clarkstown South).  Fox and Roth earned All-ECAC honors in both the shot put and 35-lb. weight throw while setting school records with their performances.

Fox broke his own school record in placing second in the shot put.  His distance of 16.68m (54' 8 ¾”) was two feet further than the distance he recorded in winning the SUNYAC title in the event last Saturday.  He also earned All-ECAC honors with his eighth place finish in the weight throw.

Roth reset the school record in the weight throw where he finished third.  His distance of 17.48m (57' 41/4”) just edged teammate, Weinert's record of 17.44m set last week at the SUNYAC championships.  Roth also placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 15.18m (49' 9 ¾”).

Weinert earned All-ECAC honors with his fourth place finish in the weight throw with a performance of 17.12m (56' 2”).

The final individual ECAC honors went to senior Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and junior Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully).  Bernstein finished second in the 60m dash (6.87) and Haskins finished fifth in the mile (4:18.75).

The two relays that earned All-ECAC honors were the 4x800m and the distance medley relays finishing fourth and sixth respectively.  The DMR included senior Nate Weber (LaFayette/Tully) and sophomores Kevin Wren (Delanson/Duanesburg), Jay Berube (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) and Kyle Howerton (Apalachin/Vestal).  Weber, Berube and Howerton added sophomore Bobby Gallant (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) to run the 4x800m relay.

Men’s Swimming & Diving

Mar. 2nd at NCAA Region 3 Championships
SUNY Oneonta junior Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside ) will be making a return trip to the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving championships.

Miller finished fourth today in the 1-meter diving event at the NCAA Region 3 championships hosted by Springfield College to earn one of only eight spots from the region for the national meet.  There were 18 divers that competed during the two-day event that began yesterday with the 3-meter event.

Miller was as high as second place in today's event and scored 468.85 to earn his fourth place finish.  Yesterday he finished 15th in the 3-meter event with a score of 401.20.

“I am extremely proud of Jermaine,” said head coach Chris Schuler-Ghiorse.  “Jermaine showed poise and came back strong after yesterday's competition.  He has had a great season to this point and I look forward to watching him perform at nationals.”

Last winter, Miller was one of only 22 divers to be invited from Division III and became the first male swimmer or diver to compete at the NCAA championships.

Miller is the current school record holder in the 1-meter discipline with a score of 522.55, which he attained at the final home meet of the season on Feb. 6.  He just fell short of the 3-meter record during the SUNYAC championships last weekend where he placed second in both events.

Baseball (0-4/0-0 SUNYAC)

Mar. 2nd at Rowan, L 1-7; L 0-6
Mar. 3rd at Johns Hopkins, L 8-9; L 0-4 in 6th (shortened due to darkness)
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend to open the 2013 season.  The Red Dragons dropped two games at Rowan on Saturday and then fell to Johns Hopkins in its two games last Sunday.

In the season opening twin bill at Rowan, Oneonta fell 7-1 and 6-0.  In game one, The Red Dragons trailed 3-1 before Rowan put four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Junior Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip) was 1-3 in the game while driving in the lone run for the Red Dragons in the top of the fifth inning.  Sophomore Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three hits, three runs – one earned – while striking out five batters.

In the second game against Rowan, Oneonta managed only five hits including a pair by senior Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia).  Sophomore Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) threw seven strong innings in his first outing of the year allowing only five hits and two runs – one earned – while recording three strikeouts.

In the opening game against Johns Hopkins, the hosts walked off in the bottom of the ninth on a single down the line to drive in the winning run in a 9-8 victory.

Junior Chris Orlando led the offense with three doubles in four plate appearances.  He also scored three runs and drove in one run.  Senior Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central) had a pair of hits including a double and an RBI.  Sophomore Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) also collected two hits while driving in a run.

Junior Mike McFerran (Albany/Catholic Central) threw three innings and allowed only one run while striking out three batters.

The second game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning because of darkness.  The final score was 4-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.  The lone bright spot was the pitching of freshman Benji Parkes (Lansing/Lansing), who threw five innings allowing two hits and two runs while striking out four batters.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-2/0-0 SUNYAC)

Mar. 6th at Union, L 7-15
The SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team went on the road to battle with Union and came up empty handed with a 15-7 loss.

Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) had three goals and Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) had two goals and an assist to lead SUNY Oneonta and Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) made 14 saves in net for the Red Dragons.

Union, which led 9-3 at halftime, saw its lead cut to three after a spirited Oneonta run in the third quarter. After a defensive opening to the quarter that saw SUNY Oneonta's Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) (12:11) and Union traded goals, the Red Dragons went on a three-goal run to give the visiting team a chance heading into the fourth.

Stern scored his third goal of the contest on a shot from five yards out at the 7:06 mark to start the run.  Van de Veerdonk scored on a turnaround shot at 5:07, then set up Oneonta's next goal just six seconds later off a faceoff win, feeding Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg) for a quick score at 5:01 to make it 10-7.

Union would score all five goals in the fourth quarter, including three in a :33 span in the opening minutes to put the game away.

Van de Veerdonk and Stern scored early in the second quarter to cut into the Union lead, but that would be as close as SUNY Oneonta would get before the halftime break, as Union scored four of the next five goals to take a six goal lead into halftime.

Mar. 5th vs. Hartwick, W 20-5

Tulley then netted her second of the game to bring the visitors to within 6-3. Sophomore Nicole Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) earned the assist on Tulley's tally.

The Red Dragons then tallied three consecutive goals of their own, including Tulley's fourth of the game and ninth of the season, to make it 12-9 with 4:37 remaining, but RPI was able to run down the clock and add insurance goal at 27:12.
