The SUNY Oneonta baseball team got seven strong innings from sophomore
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) in leading the Red Dragons to a 4-1 victory in game 2 last Sunday against SUNY Purchase. The win in the night cap helped Oneonta earn a split with the Panthers after dropping game 1, 6-0.
Mastrianni, who picked up his first win of the season, allowed seven hits and struck out three batters before giving way to senior
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush), who pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn his second save of the season.
The two teams battled through seven innings tied 1-1 before entering the eighth. The Red Dragons rallied a bit with one out while making the Panthers pay for an error.
Sophomore
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) singled to get Oneonta started in the eighth. He advanced to third base when Chris Orlando reached on an error by the third baseman. Mastroianni scored on a double by
Jake Robinson (Oyster Bay/Oyster Bay), which gave Oneonta two runners in scoring position.
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island) kept the rally going with a single that knocked in Orlando while moving up Robinson one base. Robinson scored when
Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central) reached on a fielder's choice where Salvatore was put out at second base.
Mastroianni, Robinison and
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) each had two hits in the game to lead the attack.
In game 1, the Panthers broke open a close 1-0 game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. They added a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth for the final margin of victory. Oneonta managed only six hits including a pair by Orlando.
Sophomore
Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) allowed eight hits and four earned runs in four innings of work, as he fell to 1-2 on the season.
Women’s Lacrosse (4-1/0-0 SUNYAC)
Mar. 16th vs. Farmingdale, W 15-14 OT
SUNY Oneonta sophomore
Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) scored five goals last Saturday in helping to lead the women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 overtime victory over undefeated Farmingdale State. Donodeo scored with four seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into the extra session where she scored her second game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in overtime.
Oneonta found itself one goal down throughout the overtime period before junior
Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip) tied the score at 14 apiece with 53 seconds left. Sophomore
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) scored the game-winner with 23 seconds remaining on a fast break. Freshman
Randal Cook (Northport/Northport) caused the turnover that led to the break, as Donodeo passed the ball ahead to senior
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy), who saw McNally behind the Farmingdale defense.
Tulley finished the game with four goals and three assists to lead Oneonta with seven points.
After battling to a 6-6 score through the first 30 minutes, Oneonta opened up some breathing room with three unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Tulley, McNally and Donodeo each scored for the Red Dragons.
The Rams didn't go quietly, as they countered with a pair of goals to close the gap back to 9-8.
After an unassisted goal by Tulley gave Oneonta a 10-8 lead, the Rams ran off three straight goals to take an 11-10 lead with less than 12 minutes to go in the contest.
Sarle scored her fifth goal of the season in the 54th minute that evened the score at 11-11.
Junior goalie,
Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown), who finished the game with nine saves, had a pair of saves after Farmingdale went ahead 12-11.
Mar. 20th vs. Hamilton (#11), W 16-13
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team scored the final four goals in a 16-13 victory against No. 11 Hamilton College last Wednesday at home. Senior
Tulley paced Oneonta again with four goals and two assists. Tulley currently leads the Red Dragons with 21 goals and 10 assists thus far averaging over six points per contest.
Hamilton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game before Oneonta countered with three straight to take its first lead of the day.
The Continentals tied the game at 3’s before Oneonta ran off four unanswered to take a 7-3 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the half. Tulley had two of the four goals while junior
Sarle and sophomore
Donodeo each had one goal.
The two squads traded goals over the next minute before Hamilton scored four consecutive goals to knot the game at 8-8 with 3:07 left in the opening half.
The two teams went into halftime tied at nine apiece,
In the second half, the two teams continued to trade goals until the Red Dragons' closing run to secure the well deserved win.
Sophomore
McNally matched Tulley's goal output with four of her own. Junior
Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) added a team high three assists to go with a goal.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-5/0-0 SUNYAC)
Mar. 20th at Ithaca, L 4-14
The SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team dropped a non-conference road game to nationally ranked Ithaca College last Wednesday 14-4.
The score at the end of the first period was 2-1 with the lone goal coming from freshman
Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields), about one minute after Ithaca opened the scoring.
Oneonta’s offense was stifled by the Bombers defense as they were held to only putting 15 of the 33 shots they took on the frame and forcing their goalkeeper to make 11 saves.
Coyle finished the game with three goals and one assist while classmate
Taylor Kalbacher (Syosset/Syosset) had the fourth goal.
