Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Mar. 8th & 9th at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
SUNY Oneonta senior Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) earned All-American honors last Saturday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field championships hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill.  Bernstein finished second in the 60m dash in a time of 6.84, less than one-tenth behind Dennis Thurgood of Wisconsin Eau Claire, who ran a 6.76 to win the national championship.  Last Spring, Bernstein edged out Thurgood to win the national title in the 200m dash.

Bernstein has now earned four All-American certificates including the one national title.  Bernstein ran third in the preliminaries yesterday with the same time of 6.84.  His time was just shy of his school record in the event of 6.82, which he set in winning the SUNYAC championship.

“Sean proved once again that he is a big meet performer,” said head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “He entered the championships seeded fourth and beat his seed on consecutive days to finish second in the nation.  Hats off to him!”

Men’s Lacrosse (1-4/0-0 SUNYAC)

Mar. 8th at RPI, L 7-10
The SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse travelled up I-88 to RPI for a non-conference contest and lost 7-10 last Friday afternoon.

Oneonta built itself a 6-3 lead going into halftime that included a four-goal outburst in the second quarter.  With the score 3-2 in favor of the Red Dragons, Oneonta ripped off three unanswered to pad its lead.  Senior Alex Haffner (Northport/Northport) scored a pair of unassisted goals in the quarter to lead Oneonta.

Trailing 6-2 late in the first half, Rensselaer began its comeback. The Engineers continued their run in the third quarter, scoring twice to draw within 6-5.

RPI took its first lead of the game (7-6) with 9:41 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Oneonta State drew to within 9-7 with 2:32 on the clock after a nice feed from junior captain Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) found Nicholas Sorrillo (Montebello/Suffern) at the side of the RPI cage for his second of the season.

The Red Dragons had three multi-point producers, including Haffner and freshman Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg), who had two goals apiece. Sorrillo had a goal and an assist. Senior netminder Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) stopped six shots.

Mar. 12th vs. Hartwick, L 10-1-2
A man-up goal by Hartwick gave the Hawks an insurance goal in a 12-10 victory against city rival SUNY Oneonta last Tuesday at All College Field.

Freshman Josh Heller (Plainview/Plainview JFK) scored with 1:37 left in the game, which brought Oneonta to within one goal at 11-10.  An unnecessary roughness penalty against Oneonta gave Hartwick the man-up opportunity that Hughes was able to capitalize on.

The largest lead by either team today was at the beginning of the contest when Oneonta scored three straight goals to go up early.  Freshman Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) netted a pair for the Red Dragons, as they forced the Hawks to call an early timeout.

After the timeout, the Hawks settled in and took control of the remaining first quarter, as they ran off five unanswered to take a 5-3 lead after the first stanza.  Hughes scored three of the goals while assisting on a fourth goal.

Oneonta battled back in a tight second quarter to get the score back to even at 6-6 entering halftime.  Coyle scored his third goal of the game in a man-up situation while sophomore Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) added another man-up goal at the 5:09 mark of the quarter to cap the scoring for the Red Dragons.

In the third quarter, Giuseppe Rice and Bobby Cassidy each scored a pair of unassisted goals to lead Hartwick to a 10-8 lead coming out of the quarter.  Senior Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) scored and Laureano added another to keep Oneonta within striking distance.

Senior Miles registered 19 saves in the game.

Women’s Lacrosse (2-1/0-0 SUNYAC)

Mar. 9th vs. Marywood, W 23-10
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team started slow, but eventually got it going last Saturday en route to an easy 23-10 win against Marywood University.

Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening three minutes on goals by sophomore Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa) and junior Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip).

Marywood bounced back to tie the game with a pair of unassisted goals, both goals were scored within 30 seconds of each other.

It was all Oneonta after that, as the Red Dragons ripped off 10 unanswered goals to take a commanding lead with less than 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.  Leading the charge were Boylan and classmate Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport), who each scored three goals during the run.

Boylan, McNally and senior Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) finished the game with four goals each.  Tulley added a pair of assists to lead the team with six points.  Sarle and sophomore Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) each added three goals in the victory.

Oneonta played all three of its goalies in the game, but it was junior Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) who picked up the win as the starter.  Grose made three saves wile allowing three goals in picking up her second win of the season.

Baseball (1-6/0-0 SUNYAC)

Mar. 9th at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. L 1-2; W 1-0
Mar. 10th at Frostburg State, L 6-26
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team got two strong pitching performances last Saturday and earned a split of a doubleheader at St. Mary's College of Maryland.  Oneonta lost the first game 2-1, but bounced back to win game 2, 1-0.

In the nightcap, sophomore Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings before giving way to senior Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush), who recorded his first save of 2013.  Ascher struck out seven batters and allowed only five hits in today's outing, which evened his record at 1-1.

Oneonta manufactured its run in the top of the sixth inning.  Senior Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then was sacrificed to second by classmate IIvan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland).  An infield single by Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) gave the Red Dragons runners at the corners.  After Haussel stole second to put two runners in scoring position, Chris Orlando hit a 2-2 pitch to right field, which was deep enough to score Peluso from third.

Haussel finished the game with two of Oneonta's four hits in the game.

In game 1, Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Orlando hit a two-out single to drive in Peluso from third base.  Peluso led off the inning with an infield single to third base.

St. Mary's scored its two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two out rally off losing pitcher Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane).  Mastrianni cruised through the first five innings allowing just three hits entering the sixth.  He finished the game with one strikeout while forcing 10 ground ball outs.

Sophomore Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) led the offense with a pair of hits in the game including a double.
