Weekly Sports Update - February 22, 2013

Men’s Basketball (4-21/3-15 SUNYAC)

Feb. 15th at New Paltz, L 72-90
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team battled for the final time in 2012-13 last Friday at New Paltz, coming home with a 90-72 loss to the Hawks.  Three players registered double figures for Oneonta led by sophomore Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South), who scored 18 points.

Twelve of Mager's points came from the free throw line, as he established a single season mark for free throws made with 171, breaking the old mark of 160 set by Troy Talbot during the 2010-11 season.  He also shot 85.5 percent (171-200) from the charity stripe, which is the third highest percent in a single season.  His 200 attempts are second only to Talbot, who recorded 216 two seasons ago.

Oneonta scored 12 points off turnovers in the first half to keep the game close at 36-33 going into halftime.  The Red Dragons led early, but fell behind by as many as eight points before coming all the way back to tie the score at 30 apiece.

Women’s Basketball (13-13/10-8 SUNYAC)

Feb. 15th at New Paltz, W 55-54 OT
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team knocked off first place New Paltz last Friday 55-54 in overtime to clinch a playoff spot in the SUNYAC tournament, which begins Tuesday night.

Despite turning the ball over 31 times, Oneonta made the most of its opportunities at the free throw line, outscoring New Paltz, 21-7.  The big star for Oneonta was junior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford), who poured in a game high 18 points.  Crawford also added six rebounds, two blocks and a pair of steals.  Crawford hit a three-pointer with 1:15 remaining in regulation to tie the score at 45 apiece.

The two teams battled closely all game long, as the largest lead for both squads was five points.  Oneonta's five-point lead came in the first half while New Paltz gained a five-point lead in the second half.

The Hawks struck first in the extra session with a jumper.  Freshman Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) gave Oneonta a 48-47 lead when she made three of four from the line when she was fouled on back-to-back possessions.

New Paltz took its last lead of the night on a three-pointer, which gave the Hawks a 50-48 advantage.  On the ensuing possession, junior Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) made a layup and was fouled.  She completed the three-point play to give Oneonta a 51-50 lead with 2:14 remaining in overtime.

New Paltz would tie the score one more time at 51-51 before another layup by Schilling gave the Red Dragons the lead for good.  The Hawks hit a three-pointer as time expired, but it was too late, as Oneonta still had the lead 55-54.  Schilling finished the contest with 11 points that included 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Feb. 19th vs. Plattsburgh, L 52-66  (SUNYAC Tournament Quarterfinals)
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team bowed out of the SUNYAC tournament last Tuesday, as the visiting Plattsburgh Cardinals defeated the Red Dragons 66-52.

Plattsburgh held a comfortable 34-18 lead at halftime due in part to six three-point baskets.  In the opening five minutes of the second half, Oneonta made its first run and cut the lead in half to 40-32.  Junior Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) led the charge with eight points including a pair of three-pointers.

The Cardinals quickly got its lead back to 16 points with eight unanswered led by Payne and Cassidy.

The Red Dragons made another push over the next five minutes and cut the lead once again to eight points with 8:45 remaining.  Freshman Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) (4 pts) and Pappalardo (3 pts) led Oneonta.

Unfortunately, the Red Dragons could not get any closer than eight points, as Plattsburgh pulled away in the final two minutes to secure its first round victory.

Pappalardo came off the bench to pour in 18 points while dishing out three assists and collecting three steals.

Wrestling (8-11)

Feb. 16th vs. RIT, W 34-12
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team finished up its dual-match schedule for the season last Saturday at home with a convincing 34-12 victory against visiting RIT.

After forfeiting its opening match at 125 lbs., Oneonta came back to win the next two weights.  Junior Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) recorded a 10-4 decision over Rory Bruce before junior Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson) pinned Lucas Howland to give the Red Dragons a 9-6 lead.

RIT's Barry Mayville then pinned Kyle Wierzbicki (Warwick/Warwick Valley) of Oneonta to give the lead back to the Tigers at 12-9.  The scoring for RIT would end at that point, as Oneonta assumed control of the match by winning the final six weight classes.

Junior Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) got Oneonta even with a hard fought 2-0 decision against Sean Sercu.

The final five winners for Oneonta were freshman Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) at 165 lbs., sophomore Anthony Paratore (Nanuet/Nanuet) at 174 lbs., Greg Du Vall (Sherburne/Sherburne Earlville) at 184 lbs., junior Chad Obzud (Troy/Lansingburgh) at 197 lbs., and junior Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown) at 285 lbs.  Du Vall's win was a pin against Collin Doane.

Men’s & Women’s Track & Field

Preview for SUNYAC Championships
The SUNY Oneonta track & field teams will travel to Brockport this weekend to compete in the SUNYAC indoor track & field championships.  The one-day meet will take place on a SUNY campus for the first time since 1999, when the championship was held at Plattsburgh.  The previous 13 years the championships were held on the campus of Hobart & William Smith Colleges.

The men are strong contenders to unseat defending champion SUNY Geneseo for the team title while the women will try to build of its momentum from last outdoor season to move up from the fifth spot, where they finished last winter.

The men are currently ranked No. 22 nationally in Division III, down from No. 18 last week, which was the highest the men have gotten in the two years of the rankings by the USTFCCCA.  They are also the No. 2 team in the Atlantic Region, right behind rival SUNY Cortland.

Men's Preview
The men have the deepest team it's ever had entering this year's championships.  They have strong contenders in the sprints, middle distance, the jumps and the throws.  They also have some strong runners to pick from to assemble relay foursomes that will contend for conference titles.

Leading the men will be two-time SUNYAC indoor champion Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) along with throwers J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) and Joe Fox (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) and hurdler Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia).  All four athletes lead their respective performance list heading into this weekend and are expected to win their individual events.

Bernstein won both the 60m and 200m dashes at last year's championships.  This past weekend at the Armory in New York City, he broke the conference record in the 200m set back in 2008 by Amaan Sideeq of Cortland.  Bernstein ran a 21.29, which was nearly two-tenths of a second faster than Sideeq's time of 21.46.

Bernstein along with freshman Riley Card (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) are seeded 2-3 in the 60m.  Bernstein and Carr are joined by Alviene to have the top three seeds in the 200m.  Alviene is also the top seeded athlete in the 60m hurdles.  Right behind him is teammate Rob Farrell (Carmel/Mahopac), who finished second a year ago as a rookie.

Fox and Roth are 1-2 in the shot put entering the meet.  This past weekend, Fox broke his own school record in the event while Roth had a personal best performance at Cornell.

Roth is also the top seed in the 35-lb. weight throw with Fox at No. 4.  The No. 2 performance belongs to teammate Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus).  Weinert recorded a career best performance this past weekend in the event, reaching a distance of 16.34m.

The Red Dragons are deep in the middle and distance track events ranging from the 800m to the 5000m.  Oneonta has six runners in the 800m, six runners in the mile, and four runners in the 3000m and two in the 5000m.  The Red Dragons expect to score big in these events.  Junior Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully) and sophomore Jay Berube (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) will pull double-duty for Oneonta in the 800m and mile.

In the jumps, Oneonta will rely on senior Dustin Cox (Pulaski/Pulaski) and sophomore Sean Mullen (East Nassau/Averill Park) to score points in the high, long and triple jump events.

Women's Preview
The multi-event competitor, senior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley), will look to lead the women's team into the top three at this year's championships.  Boburka is scheduled to compete in five individual events (60m, 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put) for the Red Dragons on Saturday.  In 2011, she was the Female Field Athlete of the Meet for both the indoor and outdoor championships.  During the indoor season that year, she was an All-American in the high jump.  Boburka is coming off a pair of PRs this past weekend at Cornell in the 60m hurdles and the indoor long jump.

The junior duo of Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) and Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) will lead the sprinters.  Both are competing in the 60m and 200m dashes.  Brandt is coming off a personal best performance this past weekend in the 60m (8.03) that has her seeded sixth entering the meet.

Junior Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) is Oneonta's best chance to score in the distance events.  She enters the meet seeded second in the 3000m run with her time of 10:27.09.  Kennedy holds the school record in the event with a time of 10:21.74, which she set at the Armory in January.  She also holds the school record for the 5000m run, which she set two weeks ago at Cornell.  Kennedy ran a season best time in the mile this past Friday at the Armory.

Senior Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) is having her best indoor season, continuing to record personal best marks in both the shot put and 20-lb. weight throw.  Last weekend at Cornell, she had a personal best performance in the shot put of 14.31m.  Earlier in the season, she had her best performance in the weight throw.  At last year's championships, Parsons was a medalist in the weight throw after finishing third in the event.

Men’s Tennis (1-5)

Feb. 16th at University of Rochester, L 1-8
The SUNY Oneonta men’s tennis team travelled to the University of Rochester, ranked #19 in the region, last Saturday and fell 8-1.

The only bright side for the Red Dragons was the number one seed, Michael Kennelly (Irvington/Irvington), who defeated Julian Danko after losing the first game 3-6. He rebounded to take the next two games 6-2 and 6-3 respectively. Kennelly paired up with Mackenzie Park (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) in first double and lost an exciting match 9-7. It was a highly fought battle.
