Weekly Sports Update - December 6, 2013

Men’s Basketball (1-3)

The Hartwick men's basketball team outscored visiting SUNY Oneonta 15-7 in overtime to come away with an 86-78 victory in front of a packed Lambros Arena crowd on Tuesday night.

Oneonta was led by junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South)'s 29 points. Senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) contributed 13 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) tacked on 10 points and three assists.

The Hawks got off to a fast start in the early stages of the first quarter as they took a 6-0 lead at 18:31. An 8-3 Red Dragon run, however, gave the visiting team a 10-9 advantage with 16:23 showing on the clock.

The two teams would tussle back and forth as there were three lead changes and three ties in just over four minutes of play. The Hawks would break the final tie at 11:35 that started a 13-5 run and gave 'Wick its biggest lead of the game, 32-24, with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.

The Hartwick lead stood at 34-26 with a little under five minutes remaining in the first stanza before a 14-6 run by Oneonta ended the half and gave the Red Dragons a 40-38 lead at halftime.

The second half saw the Hawks go on a 10-0 run to start the period and lead 48-40 at 16:38. Hartwick led for most of the second half and had two nine-point leads with the last coming with 6:05 left in regulation. Oneonta State would not go away quietly as it went on an11-2 run to move ahead 69-68 with 2:13 left in the second frame.

The Red Dragons held to their one point lead until a Hartwick jumper gave the Hawks a one point advantage with 1:15 to play. Oneonta answered with a McElroy basket with 49 seconds left to go up by one.

Oneonta took possession and ran the clock down to 10 seconds before calling a timeout. Lee put up a shot that fell short of the basket and a Hawk pulled down the rebound but was called for traveling and the Red Dragons were awarded the ball with just over one second left. After the Hawks called a 30 second timeout, McElroy's layup rimmed out and the game went into an extra period.

The overtime period was a back and forth affair that featured three ties and three lead changes. The Red Dragons went ahead 77-75 on a layup by Lee with 2:35 to go in overtime. The Hawks would then embark on their game-changing run that started with a traditional three-point play that gave 'Wick a 78-77 advantage with 2:31 remaining.

Hartwick had point advantages in the paint (46-24), off turnovers (19-10) and got a big lift from its bench as it outscored Oneonta 27-17. The Red Dragons converted 43.3 % (26-of-60) of its field goals, made 37% (10-of-27) of its three-point shots, and shot 84.2% (16-of-19) in free throws.

Trailing 46-39 with 4:21 remaining in the game, the visiting SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons scored the final 13 points to steal a 52-46 win against city rival Hartwick College this evening.  Oneonta took the lead for good on a Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) layup with 2:26 left, as the Red Dragons handed Hartwick  its first loss of the season.

Longto had her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a game high four blocks.  Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led all scorers in the game with 19 points, which included 4-of-6 from behind the arc.  Longto hit of 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, as Oneonta hit 18-of-20 as a team for the game.  Crawford and Longto each made a pair of free throws over the final 18 seconds, which gave Oneonta its six-point victory.

The Hawks went cold midway through the second half of the game, as they registered no field goals over the final 12:35, when a Hawk made a layup to put the Hawks up 40-33. 

The lead in the first half see-sawed back-and-forth with five ties and 10 lead changes.  A 10-2 run to close the opening half by Hartwick, gave the Hawks a 25-20 lead heading into the locker room.

Oneonta finished the game shooting 34 percent to Hartwick's 25 percent.  The Hawks held a slight advantage on the boards 41-36.  Both teams took care of the ball, as the final turnover numbers were 25 combined.
