Weekly Sports Update - December 13, 2013

Men’s Basketball (2-4/1-1 SUNYAC)
 
Dec. 6th at Buffalo State, L 68-89
Dec. 7th at Fredonia, W 67-54
Junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored a game high 21 points last Saturday to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 67-54 road win at Fredonia.  Last Friday night, Oneonta was defeated by Buffalo State 89-68.

The game found Oneonta with a decided advantage in three categories; points off turnovers, 24-13; bench points, 28-18; and points in the paint, 38-24.  The Red Dragons also shot 49 percent from the floor while hitting 11-of-12 free throws.

Oneonta found itself behind 13-4 in the first nine minutes of the game.  A 15-3 run by Oneonta over the next five minutes gave them an 18-16 lead.  Senior Dan lee buried a three-pointer to give the Red Dragons the lead.

After falling behind again 22-20, sophomore Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) tied the score with a layup and then made the free throw to complete the three-point play and give Oneonta the lead for good.  The Red Dragons carried a 25-22 lead into halftime after Mager made a layup with 1:36 remaining in the opening half.

Oneonta seized full control of the contest in the first 10 minutes of the second half with a 26-10 surge that put them ahead 51-32.  Sophomore Seth Thomsen (Bronx/IN-Tech Academy) made a layup that gave Oneonta its 19-point advantage with 10:48 left to go.

In the game, Mager collected a team high seven rebounds to go with four steals.  Freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) had 16 points and four steals.  Zuvic finished the game with 11 points and six boards.

In Friday night's game versus Buffalo State, the Bengals jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the opening three minutes en route to its victory.  Zuvic scored a season high 23 points to lead three players in double figures.  Mager scored 14 points while McElroy added 12 points.
 
Women’s Basektball (5-2/1-1 SUNYAC)

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team defeated Fredonia last Saturday afternoon on the road to salvage a weekend split of a pair of SUNYAC contests. 

Seniors Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) and Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) and sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) paced Oneonta in Saturday’s game.  All three reached double figures with Crawford leading the trio with 13 points.  Schilling and Price each had 10 points.  Price added a game high nine boards as well.  Crawford and Schilling each collected three steals in the game.

The Red Dragons never trailed in the game, as they built themselves a 28-18 lead at the break.  Oneonta held the host Blue Devils to 29 percent shooting while they shot 42 percent in the contest.  Oneonta forced 23 turnovers including 16 steals that led to 21 points.  Oneonta's largest lead was 19 points at 41-22 at the 11:58 mark of the second half on a basket by senior Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River).

Last Friday night in Buffalo, Oneonta led early 9-5 after Schilling made a pair of free throws.  The Red Dragons continued to lead 17-13 on a layup by Price at 11:29.  A 16-2 run over the next eight minutes by the Bengals gave them the lead that they would not relinquish.  Buffalo State took a 31-21 lead into halftime.

Buffalo gained its largest lead at 40-28 in the first few minutes of the second half before Oneonta stormed back with an 11-2 run to cut the Bengals lead to 42-39 with 8:29 remaining.  Schilling capped the surge with a layup that came off a steal by Mulligan.

Unfortunately, Oneonta would get no closer the rest of the way, as Buffalo State came away with a 58-52 victory.

Schilling scored 15 points to lead three players in double figures.  Crawford and junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) added 13 and 12 points respectively.  Longto added a team high eight boards and three blocks.
 
Men’s Swimming & Diving (3-1)
 
Dec. 6th-8th at ECAC Winter Championships at Lehman College, 3rd place with 777 points
The SUNY Oneonta men's swimming and diving team completed the three-day competition last Sunday at the ECAC Winter Championships hosted by Lehman College. The men matched their performance from the last two years with a third place finish scoring 777 points. The meet included schools from Division I and III.

Last Friday, senior Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside ) took the 3 meter diving event with a score of 277.10. He repeated his winning performance on Saturday when he won the 1 meter diving event, scoring 302.90 points. With the two victories, Miller was named the ECAC Diver of the Meet.

The Red Dragons had five other individuals place 10th or better in their respective events as well as five top-10 finishes in the relay events.

Senior diver Patrick Capriglione (Highland Mills/Monroe Woodbury) finished in sixth place in both the 1 and 3 meter diving events. Freshmen Brendan Leahy (Warwick/Warwick Valley) and James Giebler (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) were top 10 in the 1m and 3m diving events as well. Leahy was 8th and 7th respectively while Giebler placed 10th and 9th.

Sophomore Joseph Galan (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) finished in 9th place this afternoon in the 200 yard intermediate relay with a time of 1:59.12. Classmate Stephen Penteck (Holbrook/Sachem North) took 10th in the 1650 meter freestyle on Friday evening. He finished the event in a time of 17:09.71.

The quartet of Daniel Donaghy (Holtsville/Sachem East), Penteck, Lucas Santiago (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) and Galan placed fourth in the 800 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 7:14.59. A second fourth place finish on the weekend in the 400 yard medley relay was done by Colton Roe (Middletown/Pine Bush), Galan, Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) and John Rein (Holbrook/Sachem North).

Roe, Rein, Walsh and Galan joined together for a 6th place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay while Donaghy, Rein, Walsh and Galan were 7th in the 400 yard freestyle relay. An 8th place finish in the 200 yard medley relay rounded out the relay events. Joseph Morgan (Cornwall/Cornwall), Connor Kelly, Walsh and Rein).
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving (3-1)
 
Dec. 6th-8th at ECAC Winter Championships at Lehman College, 8th place with 309 points
The SUNY Oneonta women's swimming and diving team completed the three-day competition last Sunday at the ECAC Winter Championships hosted by Lehman College. The women finished in 8th place out of 17 teams scoring 309 points. The meet included schools from Division I, II and III.

Sophomore Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had four top 10 finishes as part of four different relays while senior Chandler Shepard (Delhi/Delaware Academy) had three and freshmen Sarah Greco (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) and Nicole DiFilippo (Danville,PA/Danville ) were a part of two.

The quartet of Shepard, Zentko, Greco and sophomore Kristin HIggins placed sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The group finished the relay in a time of 3:48.02 last Sunday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Zentko, Shepard and DiFilippo teamed up with Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy) to finish 9th in the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 4:20.58.

Last Saturday, Zentko and Shepard paired up with Taylor Waldrop (Fairport/Fairport) and Melissa Erickson (Silver Spring, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) to place eighth in the 800-yard freestyle relay, touching the wall in a time of 8:17.25.

On Friday evening, DiFilippo, Greco, Zentko and senior Alexxa Poliachik (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) swam the 200-yard medley relay and finished in 10th place with a time of 1:56.83.
 
Wrestling (1-4)
 
Dec. 7th at RIT Invitational, 4th place with 106.5 points
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed last Saturday in the 48th Annual RIT Invitational and came away with a fourth place finish, scoring 106.5 points. The Red Dragons had seven place winners in all including two champions.

Winning individual titles for the Red Dragons were seniors Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) and Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) at 174 lbs. and 197 lbs. respectively.  Graff went 4-0 while Obzud went 3-0 en route to their championships.  All three of Obzud's victories came by pinfall while Graff recorded a pair of pins on the day.  Obzud's day on the mat lasted a total of 6:48 out of a possible 21 minutes that it could have been had his matches went the distance.  Graff's pins came in the semifinal and championship matches.

Recording second place finishes for Oneonta were seniors Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip).  Mikac was 3-1 en route to his placing at 141 lbs.  Provenzano only had to wrestle twice, as he went 1-1 at 285 lbs., falling in the championship match to Eric Calimano of Scranton.

Oneonta's final three place winners were senior Frankie Provenzano (Islip/Islip), sophomore Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) and freshman Liam Bass (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach).  Provenzano and Bass were both sixth at 157 lbs. and 174 lbs. respectively while Gillen placed third at 165 lbs.

Gillen lost a close 2-1 decision in the semifinals of the championship bracket, which pushed him into the consolation bracket.  There he defeated David Shapiro in sudden victory overtime, 8-6, in the third place match.

Provenzano won a pair of matches before falling in the semifinals of the championship bracket in a major decision to Terner Gott of John Carroll.

Bass was 3-3 on the day with one pin.  His pin came in his opening match against Tyler Gallagher of Alfred State.
 
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Dec. 7th at Greg Page Relays at Cornell University
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team opened its 2013-14 indoor schedule last Saturday at the Greg Page Relays hosted by Cornell University.  The meet included schools from Division I, II and III and was not scored, but was an opportunity for the Red Dragons to put their initial performances in the books.

Highlighting the day for the men was four athletes hitting ECAC marks to start the season.  Senior Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully), juniors J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) and Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) along with sophomore Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) all hit qualifying standards for the meet in March.

Haskins hit the standard in the 3000m run with a personal best time of 8:48.68, which was good for fifth place in the event.

Roth and Weinert both hit the standard in the 35-lb. weight throw.  Weinert placed third overall in the event with a throw of 17.14m (56'-03").  Roth threw for a distance of 16.69m (54'-09.25"), which was good enough for sixth place in the event.  Roth came back later and placed third in the shot put with a distance of 14.17m (46'-6").  Weinert was fifth in the shot put with a distance of 13.79m (45'-03").

Alviene, who was an NCAA qualifier in the 60m hurdles last winter, clocked a time of 8.61 in the event, which put him in fourth place overall, behind only one Division I hurdler and two unattached hurdlers.
 
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Dec. 7th at Greg Page Relays at Cornell University
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team opened its 2013-14 indoor schedule last Saturday at the Greg Page Relays hosted by Cornell University.  The meet included schools from Division I, II and III and was not scored, but was an opportunity for the Red Dragons to put their initial performances in the books.
 
The women had a pair of ECAC qualifiers, as senior Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) and freshman Hannah Baker (Marlboro/Marlboro Central) hit the marks in their respective events.  Brandt hit the standard in the 60m dash while Baker hit the mark in the high jump.

Brandt ran 8.09 and placed 15th overall in the 60m dash.  Her time was only one-tenth off of her personal best time in the event.

Baker made an immediate impact for the Red Dragons, as she cleared 1.60m (5'-03") and finished 10th in the event.

Other top-10 performances were turned in by senior Michelle Chartrand (Boiceville/Onteora) and freshman Victoria Phaneuf (Plattsburgh/Saranac) along with the DMR and 4x800m relay.  Chartrand was 10th in the triple jump while Phaneuf was eighth in the shot put.  Chartrand recorded a distance of 10.42m (34'-2.25) in her event and Phaneuf recorded a distance of 10.15m (33'-3.75").

Junior Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers/School of the Holy Child) teamed with freshmen Rachael Shine (Clifton Park/Clifton Park), Elizabeth Jewiss (Marathon/Marathon) and Megan Ottati (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) to place fourth in the DMR with a time of 13:19.15.

The foursome of sophomores Margaret Sanderson (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) and Sarah Cottone (East Satauket/Ward Melville) and freshmen Olivia Popovitch (Clermont/Red Hook) and Kierra Keys (Rensselaer/Columbia) ran a time of 10:37.81 to finish sixth in the 4x800m relay.
