Men’s Soccer (11-5-4)

Nov. 16th vs. Oberlin, L 0-2 (NCAA 1st Round at Rochester)
Two second half goals and a shutout resulted in Oberlin moving on as Oberlin College defeated SUNY Oneonta, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Playoffs at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The first goal came from the penalty spot at 65:14 . Oberlin came downfield against the run of play and earned a corner kick. The ball was lifted into the center of the goalmouth and a headed the ball toward the top left corner. It was beyond the reach of Oneotna goalkeeper Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS). Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) blocked the ball with his hands to keep it out of the goal. He was red-carded and the Yeomen awarded a penalty kick.

With less than three minutes to play, another counterattack produced the second goal.

Oneonta attacked furiously for much of the contest. The Red Dragons held a 27-8 advantage in shots, 13-2 in the first 45 minutes. Eleven minutes into the match, the Yeoman keeper had to make a terrific diving save to deny Oneonta's Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).

There was little difference early in the second half. Waves of Oneonta players swept towards goal. Cain blooped one over the bar three minutes in. With less than 33 minutes left in the match, Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) tried a shot for the top left corner from right wing. The ball struck the inside of the left post and caromed to the keeper who punched it clear. Cain was in the middle again a minute later. His shot from just outside the area was punched over the bar.

"This result kind of sums up our season," said Oneonta head coach Ian Byrne. "We can't put the ball in the net in a big game. It's hard to believe we lost."

Women’s Soccer (13-5-3)

Nov. 16th vs. Farmingdale, W 1-0 (NCAA 1st Round at William Smith)
SUNY Oneonta moves on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 defeat of Farmingdale State last Saturday afternoon, played at William Smith Colleges' Cozzens Field. Sophomore Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) scored in the 62nd minute lifting the Red Dragons to victory. Oneonta will meet third-ranked William Smith, a 5-0 winner over Cabrini, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Oneonta held a distinct advantage on corner kicks, 11-3, and notched the match's only goal on one of those plays. Senior Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) served the ball from the right corner marker and bent it in on goal. The Rams' keeper was able to punch the ball out of traffic, but not far enough as the rebound landed right at the feet of Lyden, who blasted it home from about 8 yards out for her sixth goal of the season.

Shots were fairly even in the first half, 5-3 in favor of Oneonta, but the Red Dragons asserted themselves in the second half, earning a 7-2 advantage. While the two teams combined to put five shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, none were a serious scoring threat. After the break, the chances increased, but only marginally.

The Rams best scoring chance came in the 88th minute but was thwarted by the combination of Oneonta keeper Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) and the crossbar. A Ram broke in for a tough angle try against Stark, who was able to get enough of her hand on the shot to push it off the crossbar and was subsequently cleared out by the Red Dragon defense.

Stark made four saves while her counterpart Blair made seven saves.

William Smith and Oneonta have played five times over the past decade with the Herons holding a 3-1-1 lead. Tomorrow's second round match will be the first meeting between the squads since Nov. 20, 2010, when William Smith scored a 2-1 win on Cozzens Field in the third round of the NCAA tournament

Nov. 17th at William Smith, L 0-1 (NCAA 2nd Round)
The No. 3 William Smith College soccer team scored in the 33rd minute to earn a 1-0 win over visiting SUNY Oneonta in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship second round match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon.

Oneonta finished its season with a 13-5-3 overall record.

The game's only goal came on a peculiar play and subsequent indirect free kick.

In the 33rd minute, Oneonta keeper Stark was whistled for handling a ball that the referee determined was a pass back to her by a Red Dragon defender, because of the mistake, the Herons were awarded an indirect free kick inside the six yard box. A Heron passed to a teammate at the top of the box and she drilled a shot over Stark's head and into the top left corner of the goal.

Earlier in the first half, it appeared the Herons had taken a 1-0 lead, but it was called off as William Smith was whistled offsides.

In the 51st minute, the Herons almost broke through again, however, her shot was booted away by Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial).

The Red Dragons best scoring chance came with 23:21 left in the match. Junior Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) came streaking into the box a half step ahead of her Heron defender. Moinzadeh's shot from right in front went just wide of the left post and into the side of the net.

Stark played all 90 minutes in goal for Oneonta and made five saves. The Herons held a 20-3 advantage in shots and a 6-0 lead in corners. William Smith has notched 17 shutouts this season.

Men’s Cross Country

Nov. 16th at the NCAA Atlantic Region Meet, 7th with 244 points
The SUNY Oneonta men's cross country team put its six finishers in the top-79 last Saturday, as they completed its best day in program history at the NCAA Atlantic Region championships at Letchworth State Park.  The Red Dragons finished seventh overall as a team, which is two spots better than its ninth place finish in 2009, which was its previous best finish at the championships.

"It was a great day to be a Red Dragon," said head coach Angelo Posillico.  "It was a tremendous feeling with both of our teams having their best regional team finishes in program history. Both squads worked extremely hard to prepare for this meet and I couldn't be prouder to be their coach. We're trying to create an identity for Oneonta cross country and today was a big step in the right direction."

Leading Oneonta with a 39th place finish was junior Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru), who crossed the line in a time of 26:05 for the 8K event.  Classmate Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) was two spots (41st), but ran the same time, as three runners crossed in a photo finish.  Senior Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully) was 42nd, but only two-one-hundreths of a second behind Didas.

Freshman David Busby (New Paltz/New Paltz) was Oneonta's fourth finisher today in 60th place with a time 26:22.  Senior Mitch Todorov (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was close behind in 62nd place in a time of 26:26.

Women’s Cross Country

Nov. 16th at the NCAA Atlantic Region Meet, 5th with 177 points
Led by senior, Elizabeth Jewiss (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus), the SUNY Oneonta women's cross country team made a statement last Saturday with its fifth place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Region championships at Letchworth State Park.  Kennedy posted a sixth place finish in a time of 21:31 for the 6K race just 24 seconds out of the top spot, which went to Grace Tilton of Rensselaer.  Kennedy's finish is the best in program history, as she was three spots better than Kaitlin O'Sullivan, who was ninth in 2006.

The fifth place finish for the women was its best team finish ever, bettering its ninth place finish from two years ago.  The women have put themselves in strong consideration for an at-large berth for the NCAA championships next Saturday in Hanover, IN.  The announcement of the 32-team field will be tomorrow.  The top two teams, NYU and St. Lawrence, automatically qualify from the Atlantic Region.

The women were packed nicely at the front, which allowed them to score as well as they did overall.  The next four finishers for the Red Dragons were all in the top-51.  Junior Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) was the next runner for Oneonta in 32nd place (22:32).  Sophomore Alyssa Drapeau (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was next in 42nd place (22:44).  Freshman Mary Kate Bida (Millbrook/Millbrook) finished 46th (22:47).  Junior Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) was 51st (22:52).
