Men’s Soccer (11-3-4/7-0-2 SUNYAC)

Oct. 25th at Buffalo State, W 2-0
Sophomore Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and freshman Zachary Southworth (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) each scored their first goals of the season last Friday, as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team defeated Buffalo State, 2-0, on the road.  The victory for Oneonta clinched the SUNYAC regular season title and, with it, home field throughout the conference tournament, which begins next Saturday with first round games.  This is the fourth consecutive year that the Red Dragons have either won outright or shared the regular season title.  Oneonta is the two-time defending SUNYAC champion and is looking to make it three in a row in 2013.

"It was a solid win against a much improved Buffalo State team," texted coach Iain Byrne.  "Earning the home field for the conference tournament will be a big advantage for us."

Oneonta made two first half goals stand up today, as junior Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) recorded his third shutout of the season.  Pellegrino made three stops in running his season record to 5-2-3 overall.

The Red Dragons didn't waste any time in putting its first goal on the scoreboard this afternoon.  Vinberg scored on a corner kick in the fourth minute.  Vinberg was the second player to get his head on the ball after it came off the head of classmate Jared Van Brunt (Sayville/Sayville).

Southworth's goal came in the 22nd minute off an assist from sophomore Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee).  Southworth completed the play with a shot to the near corner.

Oneonta outshot the Bengals, 15-8, while holding a decided advantage in corner kicks, 10-2.

Oct. 26th at Fredonia, W 3-1
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team put the finishing touches on its regular season and SUNYAC schedule last Saturday with a 3-1 win at Fredonia.  The victory for the Red Dragons completed an unbeaten conference record, as they finished 7-0-2 in the SUNYAC for the season while finishing 11-3-4 overall.  This is the second time in the last three years that Oneonta has finished unbeaten in conference play.  In 2011, when the team made a run all the way to the NCAA championship weekend, the Red Dragons were 8-0-1.

The day's match began with a pair of goals in the first six minutes of play, one by each team.

Oneonta scored the game's first goal, as sophomore Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's) connected for his third goal of the season in the fifth minute, assisted by Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).  Fredonia State drew even on the goal just over one minute later. The forward had a one-v-one opportunity on Oneonta goalkeeper Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS). It was the Blue Devils' only shot on goal in the game.

The wind advantage shifted to the Red Dragons in the second half, and they made good on it. Freshman Southworth, who scored his first collegiate goal in Friday's regular season title clinching win at Buffalo State, converted a corner kick from Winiarski in the 55th minute.  An insurance goal by freshman Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) in the 80th minute closed out the scoring. The goal was assisted by senior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy).

The Red Dragons had a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Women’s Soccer (10-4-3/6-0-3 SUNYAC)

Oct. 25th vs. Buffalo State, W 2-0
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team rolled past Buffalo State last Friday at home with a 2-0 convincing win to move their record to 8-4-3 and 5-0-3 in the SUNYAC.

Oneonta dominated the play from the starting whistle. The Red Dragons had a great opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as sophomore Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) took a beautiful through pass and found herself one-on-one with the keeper. Ceschini took the quick shot but the keeper was able to get a fingertip on it to put it around the far post.

It wouldn't take Ceschini long to find the back of the net as she opened the scoring at the 21:19 mark. Senior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was fouled from behind, about 25 yards out on the right hand side. DeSimone took the ensuing direct kick and drove the ball through traffic to the back post, where Ceschini one-timed it into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Red Dragons started the second half with the same vigor as the first and had another great opportunity to make it a two goal game but the Bengals keeper came up with another great save. Junior Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) worked the ball around her defender on the right hand side and sent a looping cross to the back post that found DeSimone's head, but she was unable to generate enough power to put it past the keeper.

Ceschini would play the role of playmaker in the 81st minute for goal number two as she broke down the left hand wing and sent the ball across the middle to classmate Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills), who drove it home left footed for the 2-0 lead.

Oneonta's defense stymied the Bengals as they could only muster three shots on the afternoon.

The Red Dragons held an advantage in shots (12-3) and corners (2-0).

Oneonta's goalkeeper, Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), made three saves on the afternoon.

Oct. 26th vs. Fredonia, W 5-2
With one regular season game left to be played on Wednesday at Hartwick, the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team finished off SUNYAC Conference play by claiming the regular season title with a 5-2 win over visiting Fredonia.

Oneonta netted three goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the halftime break. In the 17th minute of play, sophomore Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) played the ball down the right flank DeSimone. DeSimone broke around two Blue Devil defenders and drove the ball along the six yard box, past a diving keeper, to Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls), who slid in front of her defender to score her first goal of the season.

DeSimone would set up the second goal as she floated a cross to the back post where Moinzadeh was waiting to head the ball past the keeper.

Fredonia had their best opportunity in the first half when an Oneonta defender tripped a Blue Devil in the box and gave away a penalty kick. Murphy, the Red Dragons keeper, made an amazing diving save to her right as she kept the score at 2-0. DeSimone would now work her own magic as she won the ball off one of the center defenders and muscled her way through the rest of the defense before firing the ball home just over the keeper's head.

The Blue Devils would get on the board in the second half as they started to press a bit more to find a goal and cut the Oneonta lead to 3-1.

The Red Dragons answered back as they would score two more to take a 5-1 lead. DeSimone took the beautiful through pass from freshman Casey Walsh (Pearl River/Pearl River) and chopped the ball back to her right foot on the left side of the goal before sending a rocket past the keeper and in to the side netting of the goal.

The fifth goal and final Oneonta goal, started with Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora). Serfis won the ball off a defender at the top of the box and passed it Ventresca who was open on the left side. Ventresca flighted the ball into the box and found the head of Lyden in the 84th minute.

Fredonia would score a second goal less than a minute later.

Murphy made 8 saves in the game.

Oneonta out shot and cornered the Blue Devils, 15-13 and 6-4 respectively.

The Red Dragon's wore black tops with pink writing and numbers for Breast Cancer Awareness in honor of those that have fought and continue to fight the battle.

Before the game began, the team also recognized their four seniors. DeSimone, Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) and Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) are all four year players while Ventresca has been with the team the last two years.

Oct. 30th at Hartwick, W 4-0
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team travelled over to cross-town rival Hartwick and walked away with a 4-0 victory in their final regular season game of the season.

Sophomore Ceschini broke the scoring open in the 30th minute as she received the ensuing Hartwick goal kick and dribbled into the box before firing the ball home for her fifth of the season.

Oneonta continued to pressure in the first half. In the 30th minute, sophomore Lasota placed a corner kick in the penalty box that was knocked around before classmate Lyden buried it in the net to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.

The second half was all about the Oneonta seniors as Regensburger and Guglielmo each scored and DeSimone provided an assist.

The Red Dragons opened up the half by earning three straight corner kicks but were unable to convert any of them as they were put out by the Hawks defense.

Regensburger would score her third goal of the season in the 70th minute. The initial shot was taken by Guglielmo and saved by Hawks keeper, Annie Millar, but the ball bounced around and was headed out by a Hartwick player before Regensburger made the back of the net ripple with her shot.

Guglielmo would close out the game, scoring the fourth goal, just 2 mintues later as she took a pass from DeSimone and slotted it past the keeper.

Oneonta outshot the Hawks 17-5 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
