Men’s Soccer (6-2-2/2-0 SUNYAC)
Sept. 27th at Cortland, W 3-0
Three different players scored goals last Friday, as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team opened its 2013 SUNYAC schedule with a convincing 3-0 shutout of rival SUNY Cortland.
Junior goalkeeper
Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), registered one save.
Senior
Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy), sophomore
Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and freshman
Tyler Kirschner (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) tallied Oneonta's goals. Junior
Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) recorded two assists, and sophomore
Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) added an assist.
"The team is starting to gel and we moved the ball throughout the game," texted coach
Iain Byrne. "We were a constant threat to score. This is a great start to the conference schedule."
Halberg gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when he converted a 2-on-1 after a Cortland turnover with a shot inside the left post. Six minutes later, Beauvais made a sprawling save on a one-touch shot right in front from Halberg to keep it a 1-0 score.
The visiting Red Dragons made it a 2-0 game in the 53rd minute on Williams' goal. He took a pass from Rivera and one-timed a 20-yard shot that deflected off a defender and past Beauvais. Just one minute later, Beauvais made back-to-back stops on junior
Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa). The first save came at the left post on a penalty kick, and the second stop was on the rebound when Beauvais dove back across the goalmouth to deny Bartichek's follow-up shot.
Kirschner's capped the scoring for Oneonta in the 78th minute with a shot from the left side that found the top right corner of the goal.
Sept. 28th at Oswego, W 4-0
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team scored three second half goals en route to a 4-0 shutout of Oswego last Saturday on the road.
Leading the offense was sophomore
Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown), who netted a pair of goals including the opening score in the 38th minute of the match. Saljanin's first goal was assisted by classmate
Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) while his second goal was unassisted in the 74th minute.
In between Saljanin's pair were goals by senior
Halberg and sophomore
Williams. Halberg's goal was in the 52nd minute and was assisted by classmate
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's). Williams' goal was scored in the 60th minute and was unassisted.
Oneonta completely dominated the Lakers, as they outshot them 18-1 overall in the match while earning six corners to the Lakers' one corner.
Junior
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS) only had to make one save, as he picked up his third win of the season along with recording his first shutout of the season.
Women’s Soccer (4-3-1/1-0-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 27th vs. Cortland, T 0-0 OT2
The battle of the Red Dragons held true as the SUNY Oneonta and Cortland women's soccer teams played to a scoreless draw last Friday on Red Dragon Soccer Field.
The two teams played an even match, both creating opportunities in the regulation time frame. Oneonta controlled the overtime, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Oneonta's best opportunity came in the 76
th minute of play when they had a flurry of shots on the frame. The first came off a shot from
Casey Walsh (Pearl River/Pearl River). Walsh's shot came from the right side that was perryed out by Cortland's goalkeeper, Rachel Axt. Senior
Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) tried to redirect the ball with a header but Axt was up to the play as she pushed the ball over the crossbar.
Sophomore
Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) took the ensuing corner kick, less than a minute later and found the head of classmate
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place), but it was just put over the crossbar to keep the game at 0-0.
Cortland countered with a barrage of shots of their own, their best opportunity coming at the 89:37 mark off Amanda Margolis. Margolis broke free about 15 yards out and struck a shot on goal, but Oneonta's keeper,
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster), was up to the task to send the game into overtime.
The two overtime periods were played between the 18's with neither keeper having to make a save that would have been considered trouble.
Oneonta held a slight advantage in shots at 14-11 with a 10-5 on goal edge.
Stark made 5 saves in the game while her counterpart Axt made 10.
Cortland won the penalty kick shoot out (5-4), for home field advantage, if the two teams are tied at the end of the year.
Sept. 28th vs. Oswego, W 5-1
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team cruised past Oswego 4-1 last Saturday. The two teams were tied at the halftime break 1-1, but three unanswered goals in the second by the Red Dragons propelled them to victory.
The senior trio of
Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield),
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) led the way for the Red Dragons as they each scored.
Guglielmo got Oneonta on the board early as she scored in the 2nd minute of the game off a
Ceschini pass. Ceschini played the ball along the top of the 18 to Guglielmo who touched the ball to her right and struck it to the back post beyond Oswego's starting keeper.
The Lakers responded with a goal of their own in the fifth minute.
The Red Dragons put the pressure on in the second half, as they took seven shots, putting three of them past the second half keeper for Oswego.
The first goal of the second half came from DeSimone as she received the ball at the top of the 18. Karly maneuvered the ball using some nifty footwork to work herself free and ripped a shot over the keepers outstretched arms to give Oneonta their second lead of the game.
Regensburger added a goal in the 74th minute to give the Red Dragons 3-1 lead as she received a pass from sophomore
Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) on the left wing. Regensburger took the ball with her left foot and chopped it back to her right before letting a shot fly that soared into the net in the upper right hand corner.
Guglielmo would add to the score with her second of the game with less than 30 seconds to go in the match. Sophomore
Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) sent a corner kick into the box from the right side of the field that was flicked on by DeSimone and headed home by Guglielmo.
Stark earned her first win of the season, making one save in the game.
Field Hockey (6-4/1-2 SUNYAC)
Sept. 27th vs. Brockport, W 2-1
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team opened its 2013 SUNYAC schedule at home last Friday with a 2-1 win against The College at Brockport. Freshman
Anna Torri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored the eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute of play to lift the Red Dragons to the victory.
Oneonta outshot Brockport 12-2, as they carried the momentum for most of the contest.
The Red Dragons pressured early, as they registered three shots in the opening three minutes of the game. Brockport’s goalie made all three stops to keep the game scoreless.
Oneonta broke the tie in the 18th minute on an odd player break into Brockport's end of the field. Sophomore
Sara Rattigan (Stormville/Carmel) carried the ball across to the left side of the circle and attempted to direct the ball at the goal where it was picked out of the air by junior
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene), who knocked it home for the 1-0 lead.
The momentum shifted a bit at the beginning of the second half, as Brockport began to carry the play in the Oneonta end of the field. The Golden Eagles got the equalizer in the 45th minute off a penalty corner.
Torri's game-winner was a blast from the top of the circle that the goalkeeper never had a chance to stop.
Sept. 28th vs. Geneseo, L 5-6
In an extremely well played and entertaining field hockey game, it was SUNY Oneonta that came up on the short end of a 6-5 score at home last Saturday against SUNY Geneseo. It was an end-to-end affair for the entire 70 minutes, unfortunately Oneonta ran out of time in the end.
Trailing 6-4 with less than five minutes to go, Oneonta pulled to within one goal when a blast from outside the circle by junior
Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) deflected off a Geneseo defender into the goal. The Red Dragons had two more scoring opportunities in the 68th minute, but were stymied by Geneseo’s goalie.
Oneonta was holding a 4-3 lead in the 45th minute after an
Day redirected goal that gave the Red Dragons the lead. The Blue Knights stormed back with three unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead with less than 10 minutes to go.
Brockport tied the game when their player was able to get her stick on a loose ball at the side of the goal. In the 63rd minute, a defender would make a defensive save on a shot by junior
Day that protected the two-goal lead.
Geneseo took its first lead of the contest at 5-4 in the 53rd minute.
The eventual game-winner for the Blue Knights came in the 61st minute.
Oneonta went up 1-0 in the third minute on an unassisted goal by junior
Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden). Forbragd, who registered her ninth goal of the season, was able to collect a rebound of a save of an
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) shot in close to the goal.
Morgan notched the next two goals for Oneonta to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 lead, which they carried into halftime. Both of Morgan's goals were unassisted and came from shots at the top of the circle.
Mercer made seven saves for the Blue Knights today in picking up the win in goal. Sophomore
Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) and junior
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) split time in goal for Oneonta and combined to make eight saves including six by Tracy, who ended up taking the loss.
Oct. 2nd at New Paltz, L 0-1
SUNY Oneonta field hockey was edged by New Paltz last Wednesday in conference play on the road 1-0.
Defense ruled the day, as the two teams combined for 28 shots, and there was just one goal to show for it. Ten shots were blocked between the two teams before they became an issue for either goalkeeper.
New Paltz got on the board at the 57:03 mark of the game on an own goal by Oneonta. A free hit was blasted from outside the circle that was redirected off Red Dragons goalkeeper, Tracy's, pads and trickled into the goal.
The last 13 minutes of the game, Oneonta pressed to try to even the score. The Red Dragons had four shots, three were blocked, and two penalty corners but were unable to put anything past the stingy Hawks defense.
The Hawks held a 20-8 advantage in shots, including a 12 to 1 cushion in the first half. The Red Dragons had nine penalty corners while New Paltz had eleven.
Tracy made ten saves in the game.
