Oct. 11 vs. Plattsburgh, W 2-1 OT2
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team is certainly keeping the fans at the game, as for the second time in the last three matches, the Red Dragons pulled out a late-game victory. Last Friday, sophomore
Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) scored with three seconds left in the second overtime to left the Red Dragons to a 2-1 win against Plattsburgh.
The game-winning goal came on an indirect kick sent into the box by sophomore
Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury). In the mass of players that were in the box, it was Saljanin that was able to get his head on the ball and push it past a sprawling goalkeeper. For Saljanin, he entered the game for the first time at the beginning of the second overtime period.
"Another great fight back against a tough opponent," said coach
Iain Byrne. "The ending was a little harsh for Plattsburgh and they didn't deserve to lose today."
Oneonta, which extended its current unbeaten streak to 10 games, trailed in the game for a third straight match before getting a late equalizer to force overtime.
Behind 1-0, it was Williams who got his head on a crossing pass from classmate
Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the 78th minute to tie the score. Williams was able to direct the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
Plattsburgh was holding onto its 1-0 lead that came on a goal in the 11th minute of the match.
Both goalkeepers were up to the task this afternoon, keeping the score as it was with many fine stops. Oneonta keeper,
Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), made seven saves in picking up his fourth win of the season.
Oct. 12 vs. Potsdam, W 4-1
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team keeps rolling along. Last Saturday, the Red Dragons defeated SUNY Potsdam 4-1 to extend its unbeaten streak to 11 games.
The match was pretty even through the first 30 minutes of the first half before a pair of goals by Oneonta over the next 10 minutes gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The first score for Oneonta came in the 36th minute, as junior
Scott Taglione (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) scored his first goal of the season. The Red Dragons capitalized on a restart after a foul well outside the box near the right sideline. Sophomore
Darren Gomez (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) took the kick for Oneonta and sent a great ball into the box, which was flicked by sophomore
Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's), which found its way to Taglione, who finished the play with a one-timer off his foot to the back of the net.
Oneonta's second goal came three minutes later on a corner kick. Freshman
Tyler Kirschner (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) sent the ball into the box where sophomore
Saljanin headed the ball towards the goal, which ended up on the foot of sophomore
Sutherland. Sutherland used his body to shield off the defender before turning and shooting the ball into the net.
Taglione added a second goal early in the second half to put Oneonta up by three goals. Once again Oneonta converted a corner kick with Taglione getting his head on a ball sent in from the corner by Winiarski.
Saljanin gave Oneonta a 4-0 lead when he was able to get through the defense on a throw in from the left sideline by freshman
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City).
SUNY Potsdam continued to battle and scored its lone goal in the 75th minute on a header by junior Conor Engle, who headed a ball sent into the box by sophomore James Turcott.
Junior
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS) made two saves in the match and recorded his fourth win of the season for Oneonta.

Sophomore forward
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) and senior forward
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored in the opening 18 minutes as SUNY Oneonta downed host SUNY Potsdam 4-0 in a SUNYAC women's soccer match last Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field.
The Red Dragons padded their lead with two extra goals in the second half. Sophomore
Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) headed in a goal off a lofty corner kick pass from senior
Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) and then DeSimone racked up her second goal of the day inside the crease in the 74
th minute.
The Bears were on the defensive for the majority of the first half and got outshot 7-1. Oneonta closed with advantages of 19-5 on shot attempts and 8-0 on corner kicks.
Red Dragons' sophomore keeper
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) played 70:30 of clean soccer before handing it over to
Becky Fildes (Red Hook/Red Hook), who helped complete the shutout. Stark improved to 3-1-3.
Regensburger finished the game with two assists while
Krystal Scott (Centereach/Newfield) and
Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora) each contributed one.
On Friday afternoon, the Red Dragons travelled to Plattsburgh and came away with a 0-0 double overtime tie.
Oneonta was out shot by the Cardinals 23-13 with Plattsburgh holding an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal and 6-3 in corner kicks.
Stark made eight saves in the game to secure the shutout.
Field Hockey (10-5/2-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 12 vs. Morrisville, W 9-0
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team scored early and often as they defeated visiting Morrisville 9-0 in their senior recognition game last Saturday on All College Field. Seven different Red Dragon players scored at least one goal in the rout.
Oneonta opened the scoring in the 8th minute when junior
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) picked up the rebound off the initial save and slotted it home. She would put the second goal in as well as
Erin Butler (Walton/Walton) passed the ball across the goal area from the right side to Day for the deflection home.
Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) would get in on the action in the 15th minute on an
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) pass that was ripped past the Mustangs starting goalie. Morgan would play provider on the next two goals as well to finish the game with three assists. The fourth goal was from Morgan to Butler, who found herself open on the back post for a simple touch in.
Sophomore
Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) scored off the final of Morgan's assists in a play very similar to the previous goal as Morgan passed the ball across the striking circle in front of the goal to Hayward who found herself wide open for the tap in.
Butler,
Anna Torri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and
Sara Rattigan (Stormville/Carmel) capped off the first half with goals of their own, all in the last ten minutes before the intermission.
Senior
Stephanie Gaska (Harpursville/Harpursville) scored her first collegiate goal twelve minutes into the second half off a pass for Torri. Torri got loose down the right hand side and slotted the ball to the middle of the goal where Gaska was able to knock it home.
The Red Dragons out shot Morrisville 33-0.
Oct. 15 vs. Hartwick, W 4-0
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team finished its final home game of the season in fashion with its second consecutive shutout, defeating cross-town rival Hartwick 4-0.
Hartwick controlled the opening minutes of the game as the Hawks nearly scored in the fifth minute on a shot that hit the post and ricocheted out of trouble.
The Hawks' starting goalie made some big saves as the momentum started to swing towards Oneonta after the initial flurry by Hartwick.
The Red Dragons would finally break through at the 27:30 mark when
Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) got a pass off from the right side to an open
Rattigan, who tipped it into the back of the net.
The score would remain 1-0 going into the halftime intermission.
Juniors
Day and
Earle would hook up to put the Red Dragons up 2-0. Earle was able to send a pass into Day, who found herself wide open in front of the goal as she ripped the shot past the goalie.
Forbragd, the teams leading scorer, would add to the lead as she was the recipient of a pass from
Hayward. Hayward worked the ball down the right side and passed the ball into Forbragd, who was able to redirect it into the goal.
Rattigan would add the finishing touches to the game and close the door as she scored her second of the night in the 60th minute. Day found the ball on the left side of the goal and was able to work it past a diving goalie to Forbragd. Kelcy tipped it high and Rattigan finished it by tipping it a second time into the topside of the goal.
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) picked up her second consecutive shutout without making a single save.
Oneonta out shot the Hawks 18-3.

Volleyball (10-13/2-4 SUNYAC)

The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team competed this past weekend at SUNY New Paltz in the second of three SUNYAC pool play weekends. The Red Dragons came through 1-2.
Oneonta opened its weekend last Friday night with a 3-0 loss to Buffalo State. Sophomore
Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) and senior
Natalia Poljak (Brewster/Brewster) led Oneonta with five kills apiece. Senior
Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) recorded 10 digs to lead the defense. Senior
Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) recorded six blocks.
Last Saturday morning, Oneonta defeated Brockport 3-1 in its first match of the day. The Darpino sisters each collected seven kills to lead the attack. Pelaccio recorded a career-high 27 digs while adding a pair of service aces. Junior
Becca Horton (Owego/Owego Free Academy) and freshman
Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) collected 14 and 13 assists respectively. Darpino led the Red Dragons with six blocks.
In the final match of the weekend, Oneonta was swept in three sets by host New Paltz. The Darpino's led Oneonta with five kills each. The Pelaccio sisters anchored the defense with 10 digs apiece.
Women’s Tennis (8-4)
Oct. 11th & 12th at SUNYAC Tournament
vs. Fredonia, W 5-0
vs. Geneseo, L 0-5
The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team found itself in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals for a third straight year after defeating Fredonia 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the tournament being held at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
Because Oneonta reached its clinching fifth point during singles, the match ended with four matches unfinished in singles.
Oneonta started the match by sweeping through the doubles to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles. Senior
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) and junior
Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) didn't surrender a game en route to a 8-0 win at first doubles.
Seniors
Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) and
Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) won at second doubles, 9-7, against Miller Barmasse and Molly Zanetti.
Freshman
Olivia Stauffer (Huntington/Harborfields) and senior
Abigail Smith (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) were victorious at third singles by a score of 8-4 over Stephanie Thompson and Emily Fulkerson.
The two clinching points in singles were earned by Sussman at first singles and Lankowicz at fourth singles, both wins came in straight sets.
