Men’s Basketball (2-9/1-4 SUNYAC)
Jan. 8th vs. Oswego, W 67-57
Sophomore
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) led three SUNY Oneonta players in double figures last Tuesday with 22 points as the Red Dragons knocked off Oswego at home 67-57. The win for Oneonta was its first in SUNYAC play while also snapping a nine-game skid.
Mager had an even game with 11 points in the first half and 11 in the second half. He hit eight of 10 shots from the floor and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.
A jumper by sophomore
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) at 16:47 of the second half put Oneonta ahead to stay at 34-32. Kelly finished the game with 13 points and a team high eight rebounds.
Oneonta's largest lead came when Kelly hit a pair of free throws to make the score 56-45. Oswego made one last run and got as close as four points on two occasions in the final two minutes, but a three-pointer by Mager put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) added 10 points for Oneonta.
Oneonta trailed for most of the opening half and was still behind 21-16 with 6:44 to go before putting together a closing run to take a 28-24 lead at halftime. The Red Dragons hit its only two three-point shots of the first half in the closing run. Kelly scored the final basket of the half on a nice move inside with three seconds left.
Women’s Basketball (4-8/1-4 SUNYAC)
Jan. 8th vs. Oswego, L, 52-56
The SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team was tripped up at home by Oswego, 56-52 last Tuesday. The hosts were led by junior
Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport), who had a collegiate best 20 points.
Oswego's largest lead in the second half came after back-to-back three-point baskets, which gave the Lakers a 51-45 lead with 8:16 to go in the contest. The Lakers didn't score another field goal until the 1:09 mark on a jumper to give Oswego a 53-49 lead.
Despite the cold shooting by the visitors, Oneonta wasn't able to take advantage as they shot only 23 percent in the second half and went five minutes without a field goal themselves until Schilling hit a three-pointer to cut the lead back to 55-52 with 14 seconds to go.
Oneonta had one of its best halves of the season despite trailing by a basket at halftime 32-30. The Red Dragons shot an even 50 percent from the floor led by Schilling, who was 5-for-7. Schilling scored a team high 11 points in the opening stanza.
Oneonta trailed 22-10 at the 11:20 of the first half before putting together a 10-2 run capped by a layup by
Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) to cut the lead back to a pair. The Red Dragons battled all the way back to take a 30-28 lead on a layup by
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) with 2:05 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) added 11 points for Oneonta tonight while freshman
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) grabbed a game high 11 boards.
