The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team came away empty from its weekend road trip to Brockport and Geneseo. The Red Dragons fell 79-62 last Saturday while they were downed by Brockport 83-73 last Friday.
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored 23 points in Saturday’s game on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Mager is currently shooting 88.5 percent (115-130) from the charity stripe this season, which has him on pace to set a single season record for free throw percentage. He is also leading the team in scoring (18.6) and rebounding (7.2).
SUNY Geneseo led from start to finish, leading by as many as 26 points with 3:46 remaining in the game. A pair of Mager free throws with 1:54 left in the opening half brought Oneonta to within three points at 35-32. The free throws capped a 9-0 run by the Red Dragons. That would be as close as Oneonta would be for the remainder of the contest.
Junior
Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) scored a season high 14 points as the only other player to reach double figures for the Red Dragons.
Mager had 25 points to lead Oneonta on Friday evening. Mager, who scored a career-high 40 points in a loss to Brockport earlier in the year, was 8-of-13 from the field while hitting 9-of-10 free throws.
The Golden Eagles scored the first nine points of the game en route to building a 45-30 lead at halftime. A pair of Mager free throws with 44 seconds remaining got Oneonta to within seven points at 79-72. Oneonta shot 49 percent from the floor for the game, but had 18 turnovers.
Freshman
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) was the only other Red Dragon in double figures with 11 points.
Jan. 29th at Hamilton, L 66-69
The SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball team took to the road last Tuesday and got edged out by the Continentals of Hamilton 69-66.
A pair of free throws by Hamilton with 3.8 second left were the final points of the game. The Red Dragons inbounded the ball and called a timeout near midcourt with 2.3 seconds left. Freshman
Dignan received a pass on the left wing and squeezed off a fade away 3-pointer, but it missed the basket. Dignan finished the contest with 11 points.
Sophomore
Mager and freshman
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) notched 15 points apiece for the Red Dragons. Mager and classmate
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) dished out a game-high five assists apiece. Dignan contributed seven boards and three steals.
Oneonta scored the first seven points and pushed their lead to 12-2 with three minutes gone in the first half. The Red Dragons connected on their first five shots as Zuvic was 3-for-3 and racked up seven early points. The Continentals scored eight of the next 10 and closed to within 14-10 after Hart's steal and dunk. Oneonta answered with six straight for a 20-10 advantage with 11:56 remaining in the half.
The Red Dragons grabbed their largest lead at 28-15 and matched it again at 33-20 with 3:39 left after a 3-pointer by Dignan. The Continentals closed out the half with a 10-2 run and trailed 35-30 at the break.
Zuvic tallied 13 points in the first half and the Red Dragons shot 50 percent from the field, including 4 of 9 from long range. The Continentals missed all six of their 3-point attempts in the opening half.
A turnaround jumper and an added free throw put Hamilton down 35-33 with less than a minute gone. However, a 9-2 run by Oneonta pushed its lead to 44-35 thanks to six points by Mager and a 3-pointer by Dignan.
Trailing 47-40, the Continentals went on another 10-2 run and took their first lead at 50-49.
Oneonta reclaimed the lead at 53-52, but a trifecta began a 13-3 run that put Hamilton up for good. Junior
Lee made a layup for the Red Dragons and the Continentals responded with a jumper, which proved to be the last basket of the night for the home team.
Oneonta cut the Hamilton lead to 67-62 after Dignan knocked down a shot from beyond the arc. Dignan added a layup with 1:44 left to make it a one-possession game at 67-64. Hamilton turned the ball over and Zuvic threw down a dunk to make it 67-66 with 1:21 on the clock.
Women’s Basketball (8-10/5-6 SUNYAC)
Jan. 26th at Brockport, W 68-51
Jan. 27th at Geneseo, L 51-57
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team had three players in double figures last Saturday but fell to SUNY Geneseo 57-51. The Red Dragons also forced 22 turnovers, which they turned into 25 points, but shot only 26 percent including 19 percent in the second half.
Oneonta trailed for most of the first half before closing the final 3:15 with a 9-2 spurt that gave them a 29-23 lead at halftime. Junior
Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) scored nine of her 11 points in the opening half to lead all scorers.
After
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) scored the opening basket of the second half, SUNY Geneseo scored 13 unanswered to take a 36-31 lead.
Oneonta still trailed 45-37 at the 11:02 mark before they scored 12 straight points to take a 49-45 lead. Junior
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) buried a three-pointer to cap the run. Crawford led Oneonta with 14 points.
The game was tied at 51 apiece with 2:50 left in the contest. The Red Dragons didn't score another point while Geneseo converted six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Last Friday night, sophomore
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) scored a team high 17 points while grabbing nine boards in leading the Red Dragons to a 68-51 victory against Brockport. The win for Oneonta avenged a loss to the Golden Eagles earlier in the season. The win was also the fourth straight for the Red Dragons, as they shot a season high 48 percent from the field.
Oneonta fell behind 5-0 early, but scored 20 unanswered points to take a lead that they would not relinquish. The run was capped by a lay-up from Loomis. Loomis finished the contest with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Crawford and
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) each reached double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. For Crawford, it was her third straight game in double figures.
Men’s Swimming & Diving (3-1)
Jan. 26th at New Paltz, W 126-74
For the first time since the 1970’s, the SUNY Oneonta men’s swimming and diving team defeated the New Paltz Hawks in a dual meet.
Highlighting the men's list of winners was junior
Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) who set a New Paltz pool record in the 100-yard butterfly. His winning time in the event was 52.82, which lowered the pool mark of 53.00. Walsh also was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay that opened the meet for the Red Dragons.
Senior
Alex Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta) and freshman
Joseph Galan (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) each won two individual events on the day to lead Oneonta. Miller won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke while swimming the leadoff leg for the winning 200 medley relay. Galan picked up victories in the 200-yard IM and the 500-yard freestyle, setting a personal best mark in the IM.
Single event winners included sophomore
Colton Roe (Middletown/Pine Bush) in the 50-yard freestyle, classmate
Daniel Donaghy (Holtsville/Sachem East) in the 1000-yard freestyle and freshman
Lucas Santiago (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) in the 100-yard freestyle.
Women’s Swimming & Diving (1-3)
Jan. 26th at New Paltz, L 75-139
SUNY Oneonta was downed by the New Paltz Hawks is a road swimming and diving meet 130-75.
The women had a pair of individual event winners, as senior
Jacqueline Haight (Smithtown/Smithtown East) and junior
Alexxa Poliachik (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) won the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 butterfly respectively. Haight set a personal best mark of 1:11.88 in winning her event.
The women also had six, second place winners in today's meet. Junior
Lindsey Molfino (Jamestown/Jamestown) was second in both the 100 back and 200 free. Freshman
Taylor Waldrop (Fairport/Fairport) set a personal best mark in the 500 free of 5:24.10 in finishing second in that event.
Senior Kristin Magliola, junior
Chandler Shepard (Delhi/Delaware Academy) and freshman
Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) posted second place finishes in the 200 IM, 50 free and 1000 free respectively.
Men’s Track & Field
Jan. 26th at Hamilton College Invitational
The SUNY Oneonta men’s Track & Field team traveled to compete in the Hamilton College Invitational last Saturday and came away with nine first place finishes, a bunch of personal best marks and a school record.
The men combined for nine wins on the day along with setting a school record in 4x200-meter relay. Senior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) was the leader for the Red Dragons coming away with a pair of individual wins in the 60 and 200-meter dashes while running the leadoff leg for the 4x200 relay. He won the 60 with a time of 6.95 while recording a time of 22.38 in winning the 200.
He teamed with freshmen
Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) and sophomore
Kevin Wren (Delanson/Duanesburg) to win the 4x200. The foursome time of 1:31.44 broke the school record of 1:32.11 set back in 2004.
Carr was also second in the 200 (23.00) and third in the 60 (7.15).
Other event winners on the day for Oneonta included junior
Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully), freshman
Steve Kuznia (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs), sophomore
Bobby Gallant (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) and classmate
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet).
Haskins led a group of Oneonta runners that dominated the mile. Haskins ran 4:25.24 in winning the event while the Red Dragons had six more runners in the top-10 including third through sixth place. Sophomores
Jay Berube (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) (3rd),
David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) (4th),
Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru) (6th) and freshman
Jim Bernstein (Grahamsville/Tri-Valley) (8th) all posted personal best marks in the event. Remillard came back later to run another personal best time of 9:10.46 in winning his heat of the 3,000 while finishing second overall in the event.
Haskins, Bohunicky, Gallant and sophomore
Kyle Howerton (Apalachin/Vestal) combined to with the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:35.20. Gallant also won the 500-meter run earlier in the meet in a time of 1:09.92.
Kuznia picked up his first collegiate win with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.76.
Roth continued his season dominance winning both the 35-lb. weight throw and the shot put.
Women’s Track & Field
Jan. 26th at Hamilton College Invitational
The SUNY Oneonta women’s Track & Field team traveled to compete in the Hamilton College Invitational last Saturday and came away six first place finishes and a bunch of personal best marks.
Junior
Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) led a group of sprinters. She won the both 60 and 200 while running the leadoff leg for the winning 4x200 relay. The winning foursome included juniors
Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) and
Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) along with freshman
Amanda Rosenberger (Callicoon/Sullivan West). The four put together an ECAC qualifying time of 1:50.16.
Cocchieri also had a solid day individually with a second place finish in the 200 and a third in the 60.
Rounding out the event winners on the day was senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley), junior
Cara Ugolino (West Hurley/Onteora) and sophomore
Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea).
Masucci won the 1000-meter run, as the Red Dragons went 1-2 in the event. She clocked a time of 3:08.50, which was just in front of classmate,
Marisa Hitchcock (Cobleskill/Cobleskill-Richmondville), who ran 3:10.00. Both times reached the ECAC qualifying mark for the event.
Ugolino just missed her personal best mark in winning the 500-meter run, which she completed in 1:32.44.
Boburka, who will make her debut in the indoor pentathlon next weekend, won the shot put, which is one of the five events competed. She recorded a distance of 11.01m (36' 1 ½”), which was just ahead of her teammate, senior
Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane), who recorded a personal best mark of 10.81m (35' 5 ¾”). Boburka was also sixth in the 60 hurdles and fourth in the 60 dash.
Parsons earned second place in the 20-lb. weight throw with a distance of 13.51m (44' 4”).
Wrestling (5-7)
Jan. 26th at Oswego, W 36-6
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts last Saturday en route to a lopsided 36-6 victory against Oswego on the road.
In picking up wins in the first five weight classes, the Red Dragons earned two by pin fall. Freshman
Zachary Aal (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills) got things going at 125 lbs. with a pin in 2:01 against Johnny Marquez. Classmate
Joseph Gates (Bohemia/Connetquot) pinned Quamaine Thomas at 141 lbs. in 2:19 to give Oneonta a 15-0 lead after three bouts.
Oneonta's six other winners in the day's match were junior

Obzud won his match by pin while Valastro, Graff and Du Vall all recorded major decision wins. Mikac won in the first overtime period, 5-3, against Omar Santiago and VanBuren won a close 6-4 decision over Eric Anderson.
Jan. 30th vs. King’s College, W 27-16
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team closed out King's College in dual-meet action last Wednesday at home 27-16. Despite splitting the 10 bouts, Oneonta recorded three pins and had one forfeit for 24 of its 27 points.
Freshman Jamie Scarantino earned King's a 13-3 major decision at 125 lbs. over Oneonta freshman Aal to begin the match.
Oneonta bounced right back at 133 lbs. when junior co-captain,
Mikac pinned Jose Paramo in 1:47 to give the Red Dragons a 6-4 advantage.
DeMarquis Holley then recorded a 6-2 decision over freshman
Curt Rowley (Duanesburg/Duanesburg) at 141 lbs. to give the Monarchs the lead back at 7-6.
After a forfeit by King's at 149 lbs., junior co-captain
Graff came up with a pin in the final 30 seconds of his bout versus Nathaniel Seals to give the Red Dragons a commanding 18-7 lead.
King's won the next two weight classes to pull back to 18-13. Tommy Desir and Ahmed Burton won decisions at 165 and 174 lbs. respectively.
Freshman
Jared Usher (Manorville/Eastport Southmanor) gave Oneonta an eight-point lead with a decision at 184 lbs. before junior
Obzud put the match out of reach with his 15th pin of the season. Obzud is amongst the leaders in pins in Division III.
Pete Dwyer closed the match with a 6-2 decision over
Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown) for the final of 27-16.
