The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team dropped a pair of road games this past weekend in the SUNYAC. Last Friday night Oneonta lost to SUNY Potsdam 82-62 and fell last Saturday to Plattsburgh, 82-75.
In Saturday’s game, sophomore
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) led three players in double figures with 26 points. It was the fifth game this season and third game in the last four that Mager has scored over 20 points. Back in December, Mager scored a collegiate best 40 points versus Brockport. Mager is currently averaging 17 points per game to lead Oneonta.
The difference in the game was in the first half where Plattsburgh was leading 40-33 at the break. The two teams played even in the second half, both scoring 42 points. Oneonta shot 53 percent from the floor for the game.
Freshman
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) added 15 points while sophomore
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) scored 10 points.
Last Friday night versus Potsdam, Oneonta had its best run at the end of the first half to cut a 14-point deficit to just four at halftime. The Red Dragons outscored the Bears 16-6 over the final 4:33 to trail 38-34 at the break.
Potsdam put the game out of reach in the first nine minutes of the second half with a 23-7 run to go up by 20 points at 61-41.
Mager led Oneonta with 16 points, followed by Kelly, who had 14 points and freshman
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster), who scored 11 points.
Jan. 22nd vs. Cortland, L 54-64
SUNY Oneonta sophomore
Mager scored a team high 22 points, but a second half rally came up short last Tuesday night against rival SUNY Cortland 64-54.
Oneonta trailed by 16 points after a basket gave Cortland a 43-27 lead at the 14:33 mark of the second half. Oneonta then put together a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 45-42. A three-point basket by senior
Terrence Parker (Queens/John Adams) capped the run.
Cortland's lead was still three points with just over five minutes remaining before pulling away. A 9-0 run by the visitors put the game out of reach with 2:39 left.
Senior Jesse Winter scored a team high 17 points to lead Cortland. McMahon scored 16 points and grabbed a game high 11 boards.
Freshman
Dignan was the only other player in double figures for Oneonta with 14 points.
Oneonta led early 12-5 thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Dignan. Dignan scored 11 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
Women’s Basketball (7-9/4-5 SUNYAC)
Jan. 18th at Potsdam, W 57-39
SUNY Oneonta junior
Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) scored a game high 13 points to go with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in helping to lead the women's basketball team to a 57-39 road win last Friday night at SUNY Potsdam.
Junior
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) contributed 12 points, four assists and three steals for Oneonta as they raised its road record to 4-3 overall.
Friday’s game was over early, as Oneonta raced out to an 11-0 lead in the first four minutes of the contest. The Red Dragons held a 29-13 lead at halftime aided by five three-point baskets in nine attempts.
In the second half, Oneonta shot 57 percent from the floor, as they built its lead to as many as 23 points with eight minutes to go in the game.
Jan. 19th at Plattsburgh, W 65-52
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team completed its weekend sweep last Saturday by knocking off Plattsburgh 65-52. Junior
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led four players in double figures with a career high 21 points, as Oneonta's defense forced 20 turnovers and held Plattsburgh to just 23 percent shooting. Oneonta converted those turnovers into 26 points while also scoring 36 points in the paint.
Oneonta trailed for most of the first half until a three-pointer by freshman
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) capped a 14-0 run that gave the Red Dragons a 22-18 lead with 8:36 left in the first half. The two teams headed to halftime tied at 26 apiece. Price finished the contest with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The two teams were still tied early in the second half at 32 each before a 15-3 run by Oneonta put the game out of reach for the Cardinals. Freshman
Caitlin Cariseo (Syracuse/Jamesville Dewitt) scored at bucket at the 12 minute mark that gave the Red Dragons a commanding 47-35 lead.
Oneonta had 10 blocks in the game led by sophomore
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston), who had four rejections to go with her 10 points and game high 14 rebounds.
Junior point guard
Schilling followed last night's double-digit performance with 13 points. She also had four assists and six on Oneonta's 12 steals in the game.
Jan. 22nd vs. Cortland, W 74-70
SUNY Oneonta junior
Pappalardo scored a season high 23 points including 14-of-16 from the free throw line in leading the host Red Dragons to a 74-70 win over rival SUNY Cortland in SUNYAC action. Pappalardo scored 18 points in the second half while hitting 10-of-12 free throws over the final 1:05 of the contest.
Oneonta had to overcome a seven point halftime deficit to earn the win. A Pappalardo steal and bucket at the 6:26 mark put Oneonta ahead to stay. The hosts built themselves an eight point lead on a pair of free throws by junior
Schilling.
Prior to Pappalardo's basket, the two teams exchanged the lead six times over a span of five minutes.
Cortland kept battling back despite falling behind by eight points. With 18 seconds left, junior Cortland made a layup to cut Oneonta's lead back to one point at 69-68. Cortland had a chance to tie the score at 72, but missed a layup with two seconds on the clock.
Junior
Crawford equaled her career best game with 21 points. Crawford scored 21 points this past Saturday in a victory against Plattsburgh and matched it, as Oneonta picked up its first win at home this season. Oneonta has moved back into the thick of the playoff race after its first go-around in conference play.
After taking a 3-0 lead to start the game, Oneonta found themselves down 15-5 six minutes later after a free throw by. The 10-point lead was the largest of the first half for the visitors.
Freshman
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) hit a three-pointer for Oneonta to end the first half, which cut Cortland's lead to 30-23 at the break. Loomis led Oneonta with eight first half points.
Women’s Swimming (1-2)
Jan. 19th at Kumpf Invitational hosted by RPI, 1st place with 399 points
The SUNY Oneonta women's swimming & diving team started 2013 in grand style by capturing the Kumpf Invitational hosted by Rensselaer. For the Red Dragons, it was the first time they have ever won the Kumpf. Oneonta scored 399 points, 74 points ahead of the hosts, who scored 325 points.
Oneonta opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 4:14.10. Sophomore
Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy), juniors
Alexxa Poliachik (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) and
Chandler Shepard (Delhi/Delaware Academy) and senior
Jacqueline Haight(Smithtown/Smithtown East) made up the winning foursome. Poliachik was also the leadoff leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that closed the meet. Freshmen
Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Kristin Higgins (Queensbury/Glens Falls) and junior
Lindsey Molfino (Jamestown/Jamestown) rounded out the winning quartet.
Zentko also captured to individual wins on the day to lead Oneonta. She recorded a personal best time of 10:56.66 in winning the 1000-yard freestyle while she just missed her personal best mark in winning the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:19.89.
Haight set a personal best time of 2:35.65 in winning the 200-yard breaststroke.
Shepard had a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and a fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle.
Sophomore
Hillary Chocko (Queensbury/Queensbury) set a pair of personal best times in capturing two top-5 finishes. She was third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:21.19 and fourth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:22.89.
Freshman
Taylor Waldrop (Fairport/Fairport) was the final individual winner for Oneonta. She swam a personal best time of 2:14.58 in winning the 200-yard backstroke, just touching ahead of teammate, Cahill, who came in at 2:14.68. Waldrop was also third in the 500 free with a time of 5:32.97.
Hannah Hillebrand (Stony Point/North Rockland) and
Kara Garbarino (Latham/Shaker) had solid finishes in diving for Oneonta. Hillebrand finished third in the 3-meter event and eighth in the 1-meter event. Garbarino was fourth in 3-meter and fifth in 1-meter.
Wrestling (4-7)
Jan. 19th at ECWC Championships hosted by SUNY Cortland, 5th with 106 points
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed last Saturday at the 22nd Annual ECWC Tournament hosted by SUNY Cortland. Oneonta finished fifth overall with 106 points while eight wrestlers earned All-Conference honors with their top-6 performances. Oneonta was only 2 ½ points out of third place with the overall team title going to Messiah College.
This is the first year that the ECWC tournament is not the NCAA qualifying tournament for individuals. On Mar. 2-3, WPI will host one the Northeast regional tournament, which is one of six such events that will serve as the NCAA qualifier. The top three finishers in each weight class will automatically qualify for the Div. III national championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Mar. 15-16.
Oneonta's top two place winners were sophomore
Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson) and freshman
Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) at 141 lbs., and 165 lbs. respectively.
Hanson advanced quickly into the semifinals with a pin of Alex Gosch of Messiah and a tech fall against Timothy Scalisi of Oswego. In the semifinals he advanced past Caleb Willey of Lycoming, 7-3. In the championship match, he lost to Jordan Dyer of Brockport via a tech fall, 19-4.
Gillen advanced into the championship match with a pair of decisions and one major decision. His major decision came in his opening match by a 9-1 score versus James Ondris of SUNY Cortland. In the championship match, he was edged 8-5 by Blake Fisher of Oswego.
Oneonta had a pair of third place finishes from junior
Chad Obzud (Troy/Lansingburgh) (197 lbs.) and sophomore
Greg Du Vall (Sherburne/Sherburne Earlville) (184 lbs.).
Du Vall received a bye into the quarterfinals where he pinned Daniel Glinko of Ithaca College in 2:59 to start his day. In the semifinals he lost a close 4-3 decision to Will Parks of Cortland. In the consolation bracket, Du Vall recorded a major decision against Alex Meyers of Cortland to advance into the third place match where he defeated Tyler Cunningham of Lycoming 4-1.
Obzud went 4-1 on the day with three pins. His only loss was in the semifinals to Jared Myhrberg of Cortland, who his currently the No. 1 ranked wrestler in Division III at 197 lbs. In the consolation semifinals, he pinned Jason Wright of Messiah before winning a 15-12 decision against Andrew Cole of Oswego to claim third place.
Rounding out the final four place finishers were juniors
Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and
Brian Barry (Poughkeepsie/Arlington), who placed fourth and fifth respectively at 133 lbs. Joining them was classmate
Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown), who finished fourth at 285 lbs. and freshman
Curt Rowley (Duanesburg/Duanesburg), who was fifth at 141 lbs.
Men’s Track & Field
Jan. 19th at NYU Team Challenge at the New York Armory, 2nd with 86.5 points
The SUNY Oneonta men’s track & field team competed last Saturday at the NYU Team Challenge at the New York Armory. The men scored 86.5 points and finished second overall behind Division I Manhattan College.
The men had two individual event winners, as senior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) captured the 200-meter dash and sophomore
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) won the 35-lb. weight throw. In winning the weight throw, Roth reset his own school record in the event that he set back in December. The distance was 16.64m (54' 7 1/8”), which went past the old record by a couple of inches.
Bernstein came through the finish line in a time of 21.84 was nearly one-tenth faster than the next competitor. Bernstein, who is the defending National Champion in the outdoor 200, is amongst the national leaders in the 60-meter dash. Last winter he was an All-American in the 60.
Senior
Nate Weber (LaFayette/Tully) took second in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:34.24. Sophomore
David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) was close behind in fourth place in a time of 2:35.09, which was a personal best time in the event. Both runners teamed with sophomore
Bobby Gallant (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) and junior
Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully) to finish second in the 4x800-meter relay.
In the jump, senior
Dustin Cox (Pulaski/Pulaski) was second in the high jump (1.89m, 6'2”) and sixth in the long jump (6.29m, 20' 7 5/8”).
Women’s Track & Field
Jan. 19th at NYU Team Challenge at the New York Armory, 8th place with 25 points
The women’s track and field team competed last Saturday at the NYU Team Challenge at the New York Armory. The women scored 25 points and finished in eighth place.
The top individual finishers in the meet were senior
Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane), junior
Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and freshman
Alicia Switser (Guilderland/Guilderland).
Parsons was fifth in the 20-lb. weight throw with a distance of 13.76m (45' 1”). Kennedy clocked a time of 10:21.74 to finish fifth in the 3000-meter run. Switser finished fifth in the pole vault clearing a personal best height of 2.80m (9' 2 ¼”).
Other top-10 finishes included senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) with a pair of sixth place finishes in the high jump and shot put. Junior
Emily DeNovio (Schenectady/Guilderland) was seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 10.71m (35' 1”). Classmate
Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) was 10th in the 200 in a time of 26.92.
