Weekly Sports Update - December 21, 2012

Men’s Basketball (1-9/0-4 SUNYAC)
 
Dec. 17th vs. Ottawa University (KS), L 54-70 at Hoop N’ Surf Classic in Honolulu, HI
The SUNY Oneonta Men’s basketball team fell at the opening game of the Hoop-N-Surf Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii last Monday to Ottawa University, 70-54.
 
The Braves are an NAIA school from Ottawa, Kansas. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams.
 
Sophomore Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) led the Red Dragons with 19 points on an 8-for-10 performance from the floor including two-for-three from three point range. Classmate Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) chipped in 14 while grabbing seven boards.
 
Ottawa jumped out to an early lead before Oneonta was able to tie the game at 9 apiece on a free throw by Mager with 16:38 to play in the first, but the Braves took control after that. The closest the Red Dragons could get was two points.
 
The Braves shot 42.4% from the floor and Oneonta 34.0%.
 
Dec. 18th vs. St. Edwards University (TX), L 54-68 at the Hoop N’ Surf Classic in Honolulu, HI
The SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball team fell for a second day in Honolulu at the Hoop-N-Surf Classic to Division II team St. Edwards University of Texas 68-54.
 
The Red Dragons had two players in double digits last Tuesday. Sophomores Kelly and Mager had 14 and 13 respectively to lead the team. Kelly added four assists and Mager grabbed nine boards.
 
Oneonta led at the break 33-27 but could not contain the advantage as St. Edwards went on to outscore the Red Dragons by 20 points in the second half.
 
Women’s Basketball (4-7/1-3 SUNYAC)
 
 
Dec. 17th at Scranton, L 59-68
The SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball had three players score in double digits but couldn’t capitalize on the 21 forced turnovers that Scranton had as they fell on the road 68-59 last Monday evening.
 
Freshman Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) led the Red Dragons with 23 points. Juniors Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) and Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) chipped in 15 and 11 respectively. Price also grabbed nine boards on the night.
 
Scranton led at the halftime break 26-24. Oneonta jumped out to an early lead and led by six points with 17:24 to play in the first but Scranton clawed their way back as they took the lead. The lead would change five times in the first half between the two teams and twice more in the second before Scranton took it for good.
 
Oneonta shot 41.7% from the field.  Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds on the evening. The main difference between the teams was Scranton hit 11 three-point baskets as compared to Oneonta’s three.
 
Wrestling (4-7)
 
Dec. 16th at Gulf Coast Duals
vs. Central College, L 9-23; vs. Concordia University, W 24-16
vs. North Central College, W 23-20; vs. Augustana College, L 12-24
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team participated in the 2nd annual Gulf Coast Duals last Sunday at Riverdale High School in Fort Myers, Fla.  The Red Dragons came away with a 2-2 record on the day.

Leading Oneonta with perfect 4-0 records were junior Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and freshman Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot).  Mikac recorded all his wins at 133 lbs. while Gillen won all of his matches at 165 lbs.  Mikac had a pair of decisions, one major decision and one win by pin fall.  Gillen recorded three regular decisions and one major decision.

Junior Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) recorded three wins on the day all by regular decision.
