Men’s Basketball (2-10/1-5 SUNYAC)
Jan. 12th vs. New Paltz, L, 70-79
A big second half comeback by the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team fell short last Saturday to New Paltz 79-70. The Red Dragons trailed at halftime by 16 points before putting together a second half run that saw them get to 70-68 with 3:40 remaining in the contest.
Sophomore
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) led Oneonta with 26 points that included 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Freshman
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) added 14 points.
The first run in the second half for Oneonta came when they were trailing 53-49. A layup by freshman
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) capped a 15-6 run at the 10:43 mark made the score 57-54. The second spurt came at the 6:27 mark with the Red Dragons trailing 68-61. It was Dignan again who hit a three-pointer to get Oneonta to within two points at 70-68. Dignan finished the game with eight points, all coming in the second half.
The game was tied at 11 apiece after a jumper by Mager at 13:56. New Paltz held at 20-18 advantage at the 9:17 mark before they started creating some breathing room. A 15-3 run over the next four minutes put the Hawks up 35-21. The Hawks outscored Oneonta 24-12 in the paint in taking a 46-30 lead into halftime. The Hawks also shot 54 percent from the floor in the half and out-rebounded the Red Dragons 22-12.
Women’s Basketball (4-9/1-5 SUNYAC)
Jan. 12th vs. New Paltz, 36-50
A big second half by the visiting Hawks of New Paltz lifted them to a 50-36 victory last Saturday over SUNY Oneonta. .
After trailing 18-14 at the break, the Hawks outscored Oneonta 36-18 in the second half to capture the win.
A three-point basket at 17:04 of the second half put New Paltz ahead for good at 21-18. The basket was part of an 11-0 run to open the second half. The Hawks led by as many as 22 points at 50-28 before Oneonta posted the final eight points of the game.
Oneonta was led by juniors
Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) and
Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River), who both scored eight points.
Neither team shot well in the first half, as both squads were below 25 percent. The largest lead by either team was at the end of the half when Oneonta took an 18-14 lead into the locker room. The lone bright spot in the opening twenty minutes was a decided rebounding advantage for the Red Dragons. Oneonta grabbed 30 rebounds to New Paltz's 17 with 13 of Oneonta's total coming off the offensive glass.
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) collected her game high 13 rebounds for the hosts including in the first half eight offensive caroms.
Men’s Swimming (2-1)
Jan. 12th at Kumpf Invitational at Rensselaer, 4th place with 373 pts.
The SUNY Oneonta men's swimming & diving team opened the second semester of competition last Saturday with a fourth place finish at the Kumpf Invitational hosted by Rensselaer. Ithaca College was the team champion with 605 points while Oneonta scored 373 points with its fourth place finish.
Oneonta had no individual event winners, but came away with three second place finishes and a pair of third place finishes along with a few personal best swims.
Junior
Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside ) continued his strong season with a second place finish in 1-meter diving and a third place in 3-meter diving. Both his scores – 299.20, 1-meter and 302.40, 3-meter – were both good enough to hit NCAA consideration.
The other second place finishes were turned in by senior
Alex Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta) and junior
Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington). Miller swam 1:59.29 in the 200-yard backstroke while Walsh recorded a time of 2:03.87 for his second place in the 200-yard butterfly.
The final third place finish was turned in by freshman
Lucas Santiago (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) in the 200-yard IM. His time of 2:05.37 was right behind a pair of swimmers from Ithaca.
The final highlights from the meet were three personal best swims turned in by three rookies. Freshmen
Stephen Penteck (Holbrook/Sachem North),
Michael Newell (Port Jefferson Station/Comseqogue) and
Joseph Galan (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) recorded their best times of the season. Penteck and Newell had their best swims in the 1000-yard freestyle in finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Galan's personal best mark came in the 200-yard freestyle.
Wrestling (4-7)
Jan. 12th at Will Abel Invitational hosted by Ursinus College, 1st place with 109 pts.
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team began the New Year in style last Saturday by winning the Will Abele Invitational hosted by Ursinus. The Red Dragons scored 109 points to come out on top of the 13-team tournament. In all, the Red Dragons had six place winners including three individual champions.
Oneonta's three winners were junior
Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) at 133 lbs., freshman
Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) at 165 lbs. and sophomore
Greg Du Vall (Sherburne/Sherburne Earlville) at 184 lbs.
Mikac opened his day with a pin of Josh Weesner of Div. I UMBC in 39 seconds. He then recorded a technical fall over William Evangelakos of WPI. In the semifinals he recorded a 9-3 decision over Brenden Campbell of the Naval Academy Prep School. He easily won in the championship, 14-5, against Ken Albert of Hunter.
Gillen recorded two wins by decision to advance into the semifinals where he pinned the top seeded, Mike Munno, of UMBC. In the championship, he defeated the #2 seed in his bracket, Justin Walsh of WPI, 6-5.
Du Vall's wins included two pins, which came in his first match of the day against Joe Pizzuto of WPI. In the quarterfinals, he knocked off the top seed before recording another decision win in the semifinals. He pinned Ryan Herman of the Naval Academy Prep School in 1:41 to capture the title.
Oneonta's other three place winners included two second place finishes and a fourth place finish. Juniors
Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) and
Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown) were second at 157 lbs. and 285 lbs., while freshman
Curt Rowley (Duanesburg/Duanesburg) was fourth at 141 lbs.
Graff was the top seed in his bracket and lost to Richie Jasinski of Ursinus, who was the second seed, in the championship match, 6-1.
Smith won a 5-4 decision against the top seed from the Naval Prep Academy School in the semifinals before getting pinned by Leon Bodden of Hunter in the championship.
Track & Field
Jan. 11th at Gotham Cup hosted by NYU
The SUNY Oneonta track & field teams got back into action after a month away last Friday at the Gotham Cup hosted by NYU at the Armory in New York City. The meet was a non-scoring one, so it was a meet to work out the kinks for the Red Dragons.
Highlighting the men's performances on the day were a trio of half milers and a pair of weight men. The half milers were all in the top-10. Throwers
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) and
Joe Fox (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) had top-8 finishes in the weight throw. Fox came back to add a sixth place finish in the shot put.
Sophomore
David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) (1:56.65), senior
Nate Weber (LaFayette/Tully) (1:57.04) and junior
Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully) (1:57.59) were seventh, eighth and tenth respectively in the 800-meter run.
Roth and Fox continued their strong winter season with a sixth and eighth place finish in the weight throw. Fox recorded personal best marks in both the weight throw (15.73m) and shot put (14.79m).
The lone highlight on the women's side was the performance of senior
Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) in the weight throw and the shot put. She set a personal best mark of 10.07m in placing 21st in the shot put. She also was 14th in the weight throw with a heave of 12.42m.
