Men’s Soccer (0-1-1)
Aug. 30th at Franklin & Marshall, L 1-2
Sept. 1st at Messiah, T 0-0 (2OT)
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team faced an early season test last Saturday night when they battled eight-time NCAA national champion to a scoreless draw. The game was a match-up between two top-10 teams in the preseason coach's poll and was played with the intensity of an NCAA tournament game. Messiah entered the contest ranked No. 3 while Oneonta was No. 8 in the preseason poll.
Despite being outshot 17-7 overall, the Red Dragons did manage a couple of shots on goal, but were denied getting a ball to the back of the net. The Falcons, who were eliminated in the second round of the 2011 NCAA tournament also held a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks.
This game came down to some solid goalkeeping as Oneonta keeper,
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse), came up with nine saves in the match.
The tie at Messiah completed a winless trip to the Keystone State as last Friday night, the Red Dragons fell to Franklin & Marshall 2-1 to open the season. A pair of goals in the first 19 minutes for the hosts proved too much to overcome.
Sophomore
Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore), who was the 2011 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, cut the Diplomats lead in half with a goal in the 28th minute, but that would be it for Oneonta in the game.
The final shots were 10-9 in favor of the Diplomats while Oneonta held a slight 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Women’s Soccer (1-1-1)
Aug. 30th vs. RIT, L 0-2 (at the Nazareth Tournament)
Sept. 1st at Nazareth, T 0-0 (at the Nazareth Tournament)
The Oneonta State women's soccer team finished off last weekend at the Nazareth Tournament with tie against the host 0-0. The two teams battled through 110 minutes of scoreless action.
Oneonta and Nazareth played evenly throughout the entire game. The Red Dragons got off to a quick start applying high pressure and had a couple good opportunities to score but were unable to find the back of the net. Senior
Lindsey Doxtader (Oneonta/Oneonta) had one of Oneonta's best chances when her right footed shot from 25 yards out hit the crossbar and went straight down but didn't cross the goal line. Doxtader created a second opportunity with about five minutes left in the first half, but
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa), who had finished it, was called offsides.
Nazareth came out with gusto in the second half and the momentum swung their way for the first portion of the half. The Golden Flyers' best chance came about midway through the second half when Amanda Sudore was able to get around the defender and put a flank service into the box. Freshmen goalkeeper,
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster), came up huge with a punch of the ball in traffic to clear and relieve pressure.
Both overtime periods were evenly played with each team creating one good scoring chance. Oneonta's came in the first when senior
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) played a low driven cross to the near post that
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was able to get her foot on it, but a Nazareth blocked the shot to extend the game. Nazareth's came in the second OT when Stark came out of her box and misplayed a ball that fell to the feet of Kristina McCann. McCann tried to one time the ball toward the goal, but
Krystal Scott (Centereach/Newfield) recovered back to the goal and headed it off the line to preserve the tie.
Nazareth had 13 shots to Oneonta's 12. The Red Dragons held an advantage in corner kicks 9-2. Stark made 5 saves to earn her first collegiate shutout.
On Friday, Oneonta dropped its season opener to RIT by a score of 2-0.
Sept. 5th vs. Williams, W 2-0
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team opened its 2012 home schedule in grand style by shutting out No. 14 Williams College. The win for the Red Dragons was its first of the season as they stand at 1-1-1 overall while the Ephs open its season with the defeat.
Oneonta didn't take long to get on the scoreboard last Wednesday as senior Brantmeyer scored her first of the season in the seventh minute. Brantmeyer chased down a ball on the far right flank and sent a ball across that looked harmless. But as it closer to the goal it appeared that it had a chance to catch the inside of the left post as the Williams keeper let it go thinking it was headed out of bounds. The ball didn't go out of bounds as it landed in the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the opening half was played pretty evenly with Oneonta keeping its one-goal lead while taking a slim 5-4 advantage in shots into halftime.
Oneonta continued the pressure early in the second half and capitalized on another long ball sent in from the right flank to go up 2-0. Sophomore
Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tracked down a ball that appeared to be headed out of bounds. After controlling the ball, she sent a long pass to the front of the goal that deflected around and ended up behind the goalkeeper, which senior Doxtader got to and pushed it to the back of the goal.
Freshman Stark only had to make three saves in the game as she picked up her first collegiate win and her second shutout of the season. Oneonta finished the game outshooting Williams 14-9 while holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Field Hockey (2-0)
Sept. 1st vs. St. Lawrence, W 5-1 (at Utica College)
Senior
Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) scored a pair of goals in leading the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team to a season opening 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence University last Saturday at Utica College. Wright also added an assist on Oneonta's final goal of the afternoon to give her five points to start the year. The Red Dragons blew open a 1-0 lead with four goals in the second half before surrendering a late goal to the Saints. Oneonta outshot St. Lawrence 17-12 while holding a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The game remained scoreless until the 23rd minute of play when Oneonta capitalized on one of its corners to take a 1-0 lead. After the ball was moved around the circle, junior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) drove a shot passed the Saints goalie for the first goal of the game. Senior
Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) assisted on the goal and added two more helpers on the next two goals for Oneonta.
Whatever halftime adjustments were made seemed to work as Oneonta tallied four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach. Wright scored the first of her two goals just over two minutes into the second half with an assist from Johnson.
After a goal by sophomore
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene), Wright made it 4-0 in favor of the Red Dragons in the 48th minute off an assist from Day. Sophomore
Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) notched the final goal for the Red Dragons in the 51st minute.
All three goalies played in the game for Oneonta and combined for eight saves on the day. Starter
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) made three saves, sophomore
Emma Wasserman (High Falls/Rondout Valley) made four stops and freshman
Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) made one save.
Sept. 2nd vs. The College of Wooster, W 4-3 (OT) (at Utica College)
Sophomore Day scored in the 82nd minute to lift the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team to a dramatic overtime victory versus the College of Wooster last Sunday at Utica College. The Red Dragons won the non-conference affair to start the season 2-0 after yesterday's dominating 5-1 win against St. Lawrence.
Day's heroics were made possible by sophomore Forbragd, who sent the game into the extra session with a goal in the final minute of regulation set up by Day. Day's game-winner was unassisted as she was all-alone in front of the cage and didn't miss from about six yards out. Day, last year's SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, finished the game with a pair of goals and already has three goals and two assist through the first weekend of the season.
“This weekend was a great start to our season,” said fifth-year head coach
Kelly Kingsbury. “We still have some things to work on, but I am very happy with the two wins and we will look to build from here.”
Wooster, which is coached by former Oneonta field hockey coach, Brenda Meese, took a 3-2 lead in the 52nd minute on a goal by Clare Nelson-Johnson with an assist from Nikki Sever. Nelson-Johnson tied the game at two apiece in the final minute of the first half as she finished with two goals on the afternoon.
Forbragd's tying goal was her second of the season as she tallied one goal in yesterday's game against St. Lawrence.
Freshman Servadio relieved starter Tracy in goal for Oneonta at halftime. She made four saves over the next 46+ minutes while allowing only one goal to pick up her first collegiate win between the posts.
Oneonta outshot Wooster 24-12 and held a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners.
“Our schedule ahead over the next 10 days is tough,” added Kingsbury. “Being 2-0 will certainly build our confidence.”
