Sept 21st vs. Oswego, W 2-1
Defending SUNYAC champions, SUNY Oneonta, opened its 2012 men's soccer conference schedule at home last Friday with a 2-1 victory against visiting Oswego.  Junior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy) tallied both goals for the Red Dragons as they won their fourth straight game.

Oneonta held a decided advantage in shots 18-8 including 11 in the second half.  The Red Dragons also finished the game with a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta's goals in the match came six minutes apart.  They were scored in the final two minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half.  Halberg's first goal came when freshman Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) sent a through ball into the middle of the box, which Halberg converted.  The second goal came on a cross into the box from senior Dan Scott (Hyde Park/FD Roosevelt).

Oswego's lone goal came in the 67th minute on a direct kick just outside the box after a foul.

Freshman goalkeeper Colan Balkwell (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) made four saves for Oneonta in picking up his third win of the season.

Sept. 22nd vs. Cortland, L 1-2 (OT)
SUNY Cortland ended the game in the 96th minute of play last Saturday as the rival Red Dragons left town with a 2-1 victory over SUNY Oneonta in SUNYAC men's soccer action.

Cortland’s shot came from about 25 yards out and landed in the upper right hand corner of the goal over the head of an outstretch Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse)

Cortland’s goal came just minutes after Oneonta nearly ended the game on a great crossing pass into the box by sophomore Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) that senior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) got his chest on right in front of the goal.  Unfortunately, the redirect landed in the body of Cortland’s keeper.

Fortier scored his third goal of the season in the 32nd minute to tie the game at one goal apiece.  Fortier's goal came on a direct kick after a foul was called on Cortland outside the box.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of the game.

The final shots were 10 for each side and the final tally for corner kicks were eight for Oneonta and four for Cortland.  Both goalkeepers made three saves in the game.

Women’s Soccer (4-3-1/1-1 SUNYAC)

Sept. 21st at Oswego, W 1-0
The women's soccer team went on the road to open the SUNYAC season with a victory over Oswego 1-0 last Friday. The goal was scored in the 86th minute of the game and the Red Dragons were able to withstand one last Laker attack to secure the victory.

Junior Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) scored her first of the season off a flank service by senior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches). Brantmeyer broke down the right flank with a nifty touch by the defender and passed the ball to Guglielmo, who took one touch on the six yard box before firing home the game-winning goal to the back post.

Oneonta and Oswego were tied at the half as both teams played stingy defense and didn't allow many opportunities for score. The game was delayed for forty-five minutes before the second half started due to inclement weather.

When the game resumed, the rain began and the game started to open up for both teams as both teams had good chances to take the lead. The Laker's best opportunity came with 13 minutes left in the game. A Laker corner kick was pushed aside by Red Dragon keeper Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) and fumbled at the right side of the goal. The ball was later controlled by a Laker player who was able to fire a shot, but Murphy was up for the challenge, making the key save.

The Red Dragons countered with an attack of their own. Junior Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) was able to control a ball after a deflection fell to her feet about 45 yards out and take on the defense before having it touched aside by a defender. Classmate Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) picked the up the loose ball and fired a left footed shot from 30 yards that was turned aside by Laker keeper.

The game-winning goal was scored less than four minutes later.

Murphy made three saves on the game to pick up her second consecutive shutout.

Oneonta led in shots and corners with 8-4 and 4-2, respectively.

Sept. 22nd at Cortland, L 1-2 (2OT)
After 106 minutes of action, the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons fell on the road to Cortland 2-1 in double overtime.

Cortland struck early as they scored just 53 seconds into play off a restart from twenty-five yards out. A Cortland player got onto the end of the free kick and flicked the header over the outstretched hands of Red Dragons goalkeeper Murphy. The rest of the half saw neither team with scoring opportunities as much of the play was in the middle of the field.

In the second half, Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored the game-tying goal in the 51st minute. After settling the ball 40 yards out from the Cortland goal, she struck an uncontested shot that riccocheted off the underside of the crossbar and over the goal line. The best chance for either team to earn the win in regulation came in the 75th minute, but Murphy made an outstanding diving save at the right post on a shot that was bending from 25-yards out.

Neither team generated a scoring opportunity in the first overtime session, but Cortland got the winner in the 107th minute. Cortland served a corner kick through the box to the far post where a player blasted a shot that deflected off an Oneonta defender and into the goal.

Murphy made four saves in the game .

Oneonta was outshot and out cornered in the contest 16-13 and 6-4, respectively.

Field Hockey (7-2/3-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 21st vs. Cortland, W 1-0
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team kept the fans in the stands until the end last Friday as senior Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) knocked home a rebound with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Oneonta to a 1-0 win against SUNY Cortland.  The win for the host was its first against its rival since October 1992 a string of 22 straight games without a victory.

“I can't even describe my emotions,” said head coach Kelly Kingsbury after the game.  “I am so proud of this team.  They wanted this game so bad and they worked hard to earn this win.”

Last season the two teams battled each other twice, with both games going into overtime including one that went to strokes before a winner was decided.  The second meeting last year was in the SUNYAC championship game.  The two teams may meet again in November with another NCAA bid on the line.

The final shots for the game were nine for Oneonta and seven for Cortland. The game was played evenly throughout as both teams moved the ball up-and-down the field.  The defenses and goalies were up to the task.  Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished the game with four saves.

The game-winner for Oneonta came on a play started by sophomore Chelsea Remling (Mahopac/Lakeland), who was able to dribble into the circle before getting off a shot that was saved by Cortland’s goalkeeper.  On the rebound, Wright was able to get a shot off as the keeper was trying to clear to the side, but the ball went straight to the back of the goal.

Cortland had one final attack, which produced a shot, but Tracy kicked it out and the clock ran out on a free hit by Oneonta.

“Today was a total team effort,” said senior captain Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs).  “We wanted this game so bad and we finally put it together.  We have been so close the past few years and it feels great my senior year to finally do it.”

Sept. 22nd vs. Oswego, W 6-1

The Red Dragons took control from the opening whistle, but were unable to put one to the back of the goal as Oswego held off the attacking front line of Oneonta.  Seven of Oneonta's 13 first half shots came in the opening 15 minutes, but the game remained scoreless.

The first goal of the game came in the 21st minute by Oswego.

Finding themselves behind with 12 minutes to go in the first half, Oneonta continued its surge and finally broke through in the 23rd minute when sophomore Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) got her own rebound of a shot and lifted a ball across the crease, which senior Johnson redirected to the back of the goal to tie the game.

Four minutes later it was Morgan scoring her first of the afternoon with an assist from senior Wright. By the time the horn sounded for halftime, Oneonta added two more goals, both of which came from Rattigan.  Rattigan's first collegiate goal came on a breakaway where she finished off the play with a reverse stick shot that found its way into the right corner of the goal.  Her second goal came when she got a piece of a shot that came from Johnson.

Morgan capped the scoring for Oneonta in the 59th minute after sophomore Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) scored her first collegiate goal two minutes earlier.

Sophomore Remling and senior Wright would score less than three minutes apart midway through the first half to give Oneonta a 3-0 lead.  Remling's goal came on one of Oneonta's 11 penalty corners that they earned for the game.

Sophomore Day, Johnson and sophomore Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) added goals in the second half for the final tally of 6-2.
