Baseball (11-10/4-3)

Mar. 30th vs. Oswego, W 5-1
The Oneonta State baseball team got a solid, eight-inning performance from senior Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) in a 5-1 win at home versus Oswego last Friday in the opening game of a weekend series with the Lakers.  Tyson was in control from the first batter en route to striking out seven hitters while scattering four hits over his outing.  Tyson is now 2-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.25.

Oneonta scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.  Senior Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) walked to start the inning, which was followed with a single to center field off the bat of junior Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic), which got Knack to third base.  Junior Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island) then grounded out to second base, which allowed Knack to score from third.

Knack, who was on base four times, singled and scored his second run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior Chris Massaroni(Voorheesville/Voorheesville).

It was Knack again that got things started in the sixth inning when he beat out a ground ball deep in the hole at second base.  Knack stole second and scored on an RBI single by Salvatore.  Salvatore's hit was followed by an error on the Oswego shortstop and a walk to Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens), which loaded the bases.  Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) was then hit by a pitch, which forced in Salvatore with an unearned run.

Oneonta's final run came in the eighth as they benefitted from a couple of miscues by the Lakers.  Salvatore reached on an error and ended up on third when Laker's pitcher, Jon Silva, threw the ball by the first baseman on an attempted pickoff.  Salvatore scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Massaroni.

Knack finished with two hits and three runs scored.  Salvatore and Massaroni each had two runs batted in out of the sixth and seventh spots in the order.

Mar. 31st vs. Oswego, L 5-6; W 5-4
The Oneonta State baseball team held off a late inning rally to take game 2 of last Saturday's SUNYAC doubleheader versus Oswego 5-4.  Junior Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) struck out a Laker with runners at first and second to record his first save of the season.

Oneonta jumped out early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Back-to-back singles by Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) and Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) put runners at the corners with one out.  Knack then drew a walk to load the bases before a balk moved everyone up one base including the game's first run by Haussel.  Jones then singled to right field to bring home Bouyea.  Knack scored on a ground out to first base by Salvatore. The final run came when Massaroni doubled to left field to drive in Jones with the fourth run of the inning.

Freshman Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) settled in after allowing a pair of runs in the third inning.  A pair of errors led to both runs in the inning being unearned.  Mastrianni left the game in the seventh recording five strikeouts en route to recording his first collegiate win.

In the first game, Oneonta trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth before the Red Dragons batted around en route to plating four runs to take a 5-3 lead.  The big hit in the inning was a two-out, bases loaded single by Salvatore that scored Knack and Bouyea.  Massaroni drove in the final run of the inning with a single through the left side that scored Jones from second base.

Apr. 3rd at Plattsburgh, W 7-0
Oneonta State junior Steve Lambert (White Plains/White Plains) pitched eight scoreless innings last Tuesday in leading the Red Dragons to a 7-0 shutout at Plattsburgh.

Bouyea led off the game for Oneonta with a single to left field before stealing second base. Bouyea advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a single by Haussel to give Oneonta an early 1-0 lead.

Haussel struck again in the top of the third, ripping a two-run single to left field to score Bouyea and Ivan Plata (Schenectady/Guilderland) and put the Red Dragons up by three runs.  Senior Knack stretched the Oneonta lead to 5-0 in the fourth with a two-run single to center field.

Haussel and Knack finished the afternoon with three hits apiece. Bouyea and Massaroi each added two hits for the Red Dragons.

Lambert earned his first win of the season for Oneonta, tossing eight innings of shutout ball. Lambert allowed three hits and one walk while striking out five.

Apr. 4th at Ithaca, L 9-13
The Ithaca College baseball team, ranked 23rd nationally, pounded out 17 hits to remain unbeaten at home this season, beating visiting Oneonta 13-9 last Wednesday.

The Bombers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings then scored a pair of eighth-inning insurance runs after Oneonta had closed to within 11-9.

Oneonta rallied for six runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to cut Ithaca's lead to two runs. Two Ithaca errors in that span led to four of the runs being unearned.

Catcher Massaroni's two-run double was the big hit in Oneonta's three-run seventh. An inning later, the Red Dragons scored twice without a hit.

Jonathan Silva (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) was hit by a 3-2 pitch and center fielder Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) and shortstop Bouyea drew full-count walks. Two runs came in on infield ground balls off the bats of second baseman Charlie MacDowell (Middletown/Minisink Valley) and left fielder Knack.

Massaroni and Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) each collected two hits in the game today.  Levanduski drove in three runs while Massaroni finished with his pair of RBI's.

Senior Will Rivas (Babylon/Babylon) took the loss for Oneonta allowing six earned runs over 2-1/3 innings as the starter.  He faced 15 batters and walked four as he fell to 0-1 on the season.

Softball (4-10/0-2)

Mar. 30th at New Paltz, L 3-4; L 5-9
The Oneonta State softball team went on the road last Friday to SUNYAC foe, New Paltz and dropped two close games by the score of 4-3 and 9-5.

In the first game of the double header, New Paltz jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Freshman Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) got things started in the top of the second for the Red Dragons with a single to right field. She advanced to second on a passed ball and later moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River). Senior Meg Beditz (Troy/Troy) singled back thru the center scoring Marzillo for the first run for Oneonta.

The Hawks took a 4-1 lead after scoring 2 more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Oneonta continued to fight back as they scored two runs of their own in the top of the 6th, but the rally would fall short.

Freshman Laura Campbell (Cold Spring/Haldane) singled to left center and Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie) reached on a fielding error, moving Campbell to second. After Stephanie Gaska (Harpursville/Harpursville) walked, Marzillo singled up the middle advancing all the runners and earned an RBI in the process. Sophomore Laura Loudis (Loudonville/Colonie Central) entered the game as a pinch hitter and grounded out to the second baseman but also earned a RBI as Deso was able to score.

The second game started off evenly played with each team getting a run in their halves of the first inning. Marzillo continued where she left off after the first game as she doubled to right center, scoring Campbell after she reached on a fielder’s choice.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Red Dragons scored a second run to take the lead 2-1. Freshman Shannon McQueeney (Dix Hills/Commack) singled up the middle. Classmate Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park) followed with a single of her own, advancing McQueeney to third. Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) singled to left center scoring McQueeney.

The lead did not last long as the Hawks were able to plate seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Oneonta continued to fight as they scored two in the 5th and 1 in the 7th, but fell short 9-5.

Men’s Lacrosse (2-6)

Apr. 4th vs. Hamilton, L 3-14
The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team fell hard last Wednesday to visiting Hamilton College 14-3 at home.  The Continentals took charge from the opening whistle, holding the Red Dragons scoreless for the first half en route to the lopsided victory.

Oneonta had three players score one goal each on the evening.  Lost in the final score was the performance in goal by senior Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) who faced 47 shots and recorded 15 saves, some of which were from point blank range.

Hamilton finished the game with a clear shot advantage at 48-25 while winning the ground ball battle by a margin of 46-27.
Women’s Lacrosse (8-0/2-0)

Apr. 1st vs. Buffalo State, W 18-9
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team showed that they were no fools last Sunday as they defeated visiting Buffalo State 18-9 to remain undefeated on the season.  Oneonta never trailed in the game en route to equaling the program's best start ever to a season, matching the 7-0 start of the 2003 team.

Oneonta, which is amongst the NCAA Div. III leaders in scoring, was over its average of 17 goals per game.  Leading the charge was senior Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip), who tallied six for the Red Dragons.  Her second goal 11:43 into the first half marked her 200th career goal, as she became only the second women's player to reach this milestone.  She is closing in on the career marks for both goals and points and should do so in one of the next two games, which will be on the road at Potsdam (Apr. 3) and Fredonia next Saturday.

The Red Dragons didn't waste any time in jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute on goals by senior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) and Monteith.  Kissinger, who was 3rd in Div. III in draw controls per game, grabbed a team high seven draw controls in today's contest.  She also finished with three goals.

Buffalo State got the scoreboard at the 4:48 mark into the first half to make the score 2-1.

Oneonta scored three unanswered goals to push its early lead to 5-1.  Two of the scores were by junior Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy), who finished the game with four goals and two assists.

Oneonta built a comfortable 11-6 lead by halftime, holding a 24-11 advantage in shots.  They also had a 13-5 advantage in draw controls in the half and finished with 20 draw controls for the game, which was above its season average of 19.  The Red Dragons entered today's game 2nd in Div. III in draw controls per game.

In the second half, Buffalo State would draw as close as 12-8 on a goal by Clarkson, before the Red Dragons slammed the door shut the rest of the way, outscoring the Bengals 6-1 for the final margin of victory.

Apr. 3rd at Potsdam, W 17-11
The milestones keep coming and the records keep falling for the Oneonta State women's lacrosse team, who went on the road and defeated SUNY Potsdam last Tuesday 17-11.  The win for the Red Dragons was its eighth consecutive victory to start the season, which is the best start to a season in the history of the program.  On Saturday, they tied the 2003 squad with seven straight wins to begin the season, but today moved passed it to become the best ever.  The win also moved them to 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

The team accomplishment was just one of the highlights in today's game as senior Monteith became the program's all time leading scorer, surpassing Oneonta State Hall of Famer Susanne Murray Masi, before Monteith was even born a quarter century ago in 1987.

“I came to Oneonta never expecting to reach a milestone like this,” Monteith said via text message after the game.  “I'm thrilled to have done this while we are 8-0, because the team success means more to me than my individual accomplishment.  I couldn't have done this without the support of my teammates.  This is only the beginning for us.”

Monteith lit it up for eight goals while adding one assist for nine points.  She now has 212 goals, breaking the Masi's mark of 209, while totaling 266 points to pass the old record of 264.  The eight goals in the game also tied her single game record, which she did twice during the 2010 season.

The Red Dragons, who received votes in this week's IWLCA Div. III Coaches Poll, actually trailed in the contest 5-3 in the first half before scoring four unanswered in the final six minutes of the half to head into the break up 7-5.  Monteith had a pair of scores while freshman Rebecca Monteith (East Northport/Northport) and sophomore Alexa Anzalone (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) added one goal each.  Freshman Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) assisted on three of the four goals.

Junior Tulley scored in the first minute of the second half to give Oneonta a three-goal cushion.  Potsdam battled back twice, but never got as close as two goals during the second half.  Oneonta ran away from the Bears with four straight goals over a five-minute stretch to put the game out of reach at 16-10.  After one final goal by the hosts, Monteith capped the scoring with less than four minutes remaining in the game for the final of 17-11.

Oneonta had a 19-11 advantage in the game in draw controls including a team high nine by Monteith.  Classmate Kissinger, who leads Div. III in draw controls at nearly nine per game, added five.

Senior Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) and sophomore Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) combined for 10 saves in the game today.  Muscietta picked up her eighth win of the season.
