Weekly Sports Update - April 27, 2012

Baseball (14-18/7-8)
 
Apr. 20th vs. Cortland, L 1-4
The Oneonta State baseball team fell at home last Friday to nationally ranked SUNY Cortland 4-1 in the first of a three-game series in the SUNYAC. 

Cortland scored single runs in the first two innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  A fielding error by Oneonta in the first inning led to an unearned run by Cortland.

Cortland stretched its lead to 3-0 with a single run in the fifth inning. 

The lone for Oneonta came in the bottom of the sixth via a solo home run by senior Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane).  It was Knack's team-leading third round-tripper of the season.  Knack finished the game with two of Oneonta's hits in the game.

Oneonta threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs off Cortland’s starter.  The inning ended when Cortland was able to record an out at second base. 
 
Apr. 21st vs. Cortland, L 1-7; L, 2-16
The Oneonta State baseball team was defeated twice last Saturday by visiting SUNY Cortland in a SUNYAC doubleheader.  Oneonta managed only a single hit in dropping game 1, 7-1 while the rival Red Dragons pounded out 21 hits in taking game 2, 16-2.

SUNY Cortland all the runs they would need for their starter in the top of the third inning en route to the victory. 

In the third, Cortland scored three runs with two outs. 

Oneonta's lone run came in the fifth inning.  Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a balk.  He scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) took the loss after lasting only three innings for Oneonta.  He allowed eight hits and was charged with four runs, all earned.  He recorded three strikeouts while walking two batters.

In game 2, Cortland scored a single run in the top of the second inning before Oneonta bounced back with a pair to take a 2-1 lead.  Senior Knack led off with a single and went to second when Massaroni was hit by a pitch.  Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) moved the two into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.  Knack scored on a ground out to shortstop and Massaroni scored on a wild pitch.

Cortland left no doubt about this game as they scored four runs in three of the next four innings to take command. 

Knack, Massaroni and Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) collected two hits each in the loss.

Senior Will Rivas (Babylon/Babylon) took the loss for Oneonta allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 2-2/3 innings.
 
Apr. 25th vs. Ithaca, L 4-6
The Oneonta State baseball team had one bad inning last Wednesday, but it cost them in a 6-4 loss to Ithaca College.  Oneonta made three first inning errors that led to four unearned runs as the Bombers scored five times.

Ithaca made three errors in the game including two that led to a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning for Oneonta when they scored three runs.

After the second inning, the game moved along with both pitching staffs settling in and both defenses playing solid baseball.  Oneonta ended up out-hitting Ithaca 11-10.  Ithaca left 10 runners on base while Oneonta stranded nine.

Oneonta starter, freshman Mike McFerran (Albany/Catholic Central) got the loss, but pitched well in his five innings.  He struck out four batters and allowed seven hits.  The bullpen threw four scoreless innings allowing only three hits over the final four innings.

Senior Knack, who collected three hits and an RBI from the leadoff spot, led the Oneonta offense.  Junior Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
 
Softball (11-21/4-10)
 
Apr. 20th at Brockport, W 1-0; L, 3-6
Oneonta State freshman Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) threw a complete game, six-hitter to lead the softball team to a doubleheader split last Friday at Brockport.  Hitt struck out two batters in seven innings as the Red Dragons won game 1 of the twin bill with the Golden Eagles.

The lone run for Oneonta came in the sixth inning.  The run came on a leadoff home run by freshman Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) over the center field wall.  Marzillo finished with a pair of hits, as did classmate Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park).

In game 2, Oneonta jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Back-to-back singles by Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag/Arlington) and Laura Campbell (Cold Spring/Haldane) started the game for Oneonta.  A fielder's choice put out Kendziera at third before a single by senior Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie) loaded the bases.  Candler Campbell singled through the right side to drive in the first run.  Freshman Shannon McQueeney (Dix Hills/Commack) then singled through the right side to drive in a pair of runs.

Brockport scored single runs in their first three innings to tie the score.  A three-run fifth inning gave Brockport a 6-3 lead that they would hold on to en route to the victory.

Freshman Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) went six innings for Oneonta and suffered the loss.  She allowed 12 hits and five earned runs while striking out five batters.
 
Apr. 25th vs. Kings College, L 2-5; W 6-2
The SUNY Oneonta softball team split a doubleheader at home last Wednesday with Kings College, taking game two of the series 6-2.  The Red Dragons got a solid pitching performance out of freshman Hitt, who threw a complete game four-hitter to earn her fourth win of the season.
 
Kings took the lead at the end of the first inning, 1-0, after Hitt walked the leadoff batter. After a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second, she later scored on two consecutive illegal pitch calls.
 
Oneonta answered back in the third inning when the Lady Monarchs pitcher bobbled two grounders hit back up the middle, loading the bases with freshmen McQueeney, L. Campbell and a single by Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland). Classmate Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River) laced a single down the left field line, scoring McQueeney. Senior Deso stepped up to the plate and hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, plating Rivera. Campbell scored on a passed ball for the third run of the inning.
 
The Red Dragons added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the victory. In the fifth inning, Campbell singled and moved to second on a Mahoney sacrifice bunt. Deso drove Campbell in with a single up the middle.
 
The sixth inning started with sophomore Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) reaching base on a bunt single. With two outs, McQueeney walked and Rivera singled to right center, plating Campbell. The second run of the inning came on the Monarch pitchers second passed ball of the game.
 
Oneonta closed out the game on a terrific double play. After a leadoff walk, the runner advanced to second on a fielder's choice. The next batter stepped to the plate and popped to shallow left field. Rivera came charging and made a diving catch for the second out and doubled off the runner at second base to end the game.
 
Rivera finished game two with two hits. Deso drove in two runs.
 
In game 1, Oneonta jumped out to a 1-0 lead after three innings. L. Campbell tripled down the right field line and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.
 
The Lady Monarchs came back with three runs in the top of the fourth.

Men’s Lacrosse (4-9/2-3)
 
Apr. 21st vs. Oswego, W 15-10
The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team put themselves in the thick of the SUNYAC tournament race with its 15-10 win at home last Saturday versus Oswego.  The Red Dragons, who were tied with the Lakers with a 1-3 record, now control its own destiny with one final game in the conference next Saturday at home against Brockport. 

Saturday's game was over in the opening quarter as the Red Dragons took it to the Lakers with its most productive period of the season.  Oneonta registered eight goals while holding Oswego scoreless in the opening 15 minutes of the contest.  Junior John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) led the attack with all three of his goals for the game in the first quarter.  Classmate Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) added two goals and an assist.  van de Veerdonk would finish the game with four goals and two assists.

Oswego mounted a comeback in the second period, but still trailed 10-4 at halftime.  The two squads played even in the third period. 

Oneonta scored the first two goals of the fourth period to push its lead back to eight goals.  The Lakers closed with the final three goals of the game, but the game was already in hand for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta won 23-of-29 face offs while holding a 46-31 shot advantage.  Senior Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) made seven saves in goal for Oneonta.
 
Women’s Lacrosse (11-3/4-3)
 
Apr. 21st vs. Oswego, W 21-9
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team dominated visiting Oswego last Saturday en route to a 21-9 win.  The win for Oneonta tied the single season record for wins, which was set in 2003 when the team finished 11-4.  The victory also kept the Red Dragons in contention for one of the four conference playoff spots with two games remaining against SUNY Cortland and Brockport this week.

Oneonta actually found themselves behind 2-1, 12 minutes into today's game.  The Red Dragons then ran off six unanswered to take the lead for good with 10 minutes still remaining in the first half.

Senior Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) led the attack once again.  She scored five goals and added two assists in the first half en route to seven goals and three assists in the game.  Monteith continues to add to her career leading numbers as she closes in on 300 career points and 250 career goals.  She also broke her own single season record for points as she now has 84 on the season, which is one more than the 83 points she had as a freshman.

Junior Andrea Spano (Mt. Sinai/Mt. Sinai) added four goals and one assist on the day.  Classmate Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) had three goals while adding a pair of assists.

Oneonta pushed its lead to 10 goals early in the second half on goals by senior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) and Monteith.  A goal by sophomore Alexa Anzalone (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) 12 minutes into the second half gave the Red Dragons its largest lead of the game at 19-4.

Oneonta held a decided shot advantage in today's game, 46-22, while controlling 23 draws and converting 3-of-9 free position shots.
 
Apr. 24th vs. Cortland, L 11-18
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team played even with No. 2 SUNY Cortland for the first five minutes of last Tuesday's contest before the rival Red Dragons asserted itself en route to winning 18-11.  The loss for Oneonta puts them in a must win scenario on Saturday versus Brockport.

Oneonta put the game's first goal on the scoreboard as senior Monteith scored on a free position shot just 19 seconds into the game.  Monteith finished the game with four points on four goals to put her over 300 career points.  Monteith is the first men or women's lacrosse player to eclipse the 300-point barrier.

Cortland tied the score 36 seconds later before Monteith scored again at the 2:11 mark to put Oneonta ahead for the last time in the game.

After a free position goal tied the game at two goals apiece, Cortland notched back-to-back goals within a minute to go ahead for good.

Cortland would run its lead to 12-4 at halftime, scoring seven of the final eight goals of the first half.

The visiting Red Dragons put the game away early in the second half with four consecutive goals to cap a run of eight unanswered.

Oneonta converted 4-of-7 free position shots and had an 18-13 advantage in draw controls.  Cortland held a 34-29 shot advantage while making good on 14-of-15 clear opportunities.
 
Men’s Track & Field
 
Apr. 21st at Cortland Classic, non-scoring
The men had top individual performances turned in by a pair of rookies this past weekend as freshmen Rob Farrell (Carmel/Mahopac) and Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) were in the thick of it on the track and in the field.

Farrell won an individual event along with running a leg on two winning relays.  Farrell won the 110-meter high hurdles in an ECAC qualifying time of 15.49.  Farrell also placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with an ECAC qualifying time of 55.67.

In the relays, the 4x100 relay ran an ECAC qualifying time of 42.86 while the 4x400 relay set a new school record time of 3:15.25, which also reached the ECAC mark.

Senior Jesse Dobson (Farmingville/Sachem East) and junior Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) were part of both relays for Oneonta while freshman Brandon Lee (West Babylon/West Babylon) took part in the 4x100 and senior Sean Wren (Delanson/Duanesburg) was the fourth on the 4x400.  Wren was second in the 400 hurdles with an ECAC qualifying time of 54.31.

Weinert had another solid all-around showing in the throwing events including breaking his own school record in the hammer throw set at the opening outdoor meet of the season in California.  Weinert went nearly two feet past his distance in the hammer, reaching 49.50m (162'-5”), which was good enough for fourth place in the event.  He also was the top Oneonta finisher in the discus (6th) and javelin (5th).

Other top performances for Oneonta in the meet were turned in by sophomore Jermanine Miller (Elmira/Southside) and junior Ben Reynolds (Endicott/Maine-Endwell).  Miller was second in both the 110 hurdles and long jump.  He ran an ECAC qualifying time of 15.69 in the hurdles while reaching a distance of 6.73m (22'-1”) in the long jump.  Reynolds ran a personal best time of 33:48.12 in finishing second in the 10,000.
 
Women’s Track & Field
 
Apr. 21st at Cortland Classic, non-scoring
The women had five individuals and one relay capture first place finishes in the meet.  Senior Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) won a pair of events while Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus), Pam Ernst (Miller Place/Miller Place) and Allison Ryley (LaGrangeville/Arlington) each won one event.  The relay win came in the 4x100-meter event.

Timmons won both the discus and hammer events, breaking her own school record in the latter.  Her distance of 49.61m (162'-9”) in the hammer was nearly two feet farther than her previous mark.  She won the discus with a distance of 44.80m (147').

Kennedy ran a personal best and ECAC qualifying time of 18:25.29 in winning the 5,000-meter run.

Ernst won the 10,000-meter run with an ECAC qualifying time of 40:19.78.

Ryley recorded an ECAC qualifying time of 11:51.79 in winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The foursome of sophomores Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip), Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) and Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) and freshman Kenya Outram (Brooklyn/Victory Collegiate) were victorious in the 4x100 relay in a time of 51.15.

Cocchieri also teamed with senior Lacie Newland (Gloversville/Gloversville), junior Shannon Hopkins (Fort Salonga/Kings Park) and freshman Alexandra Knorr (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) to run an ECAC qualifying time of 4:06.14 in the 4x400-meter relay.
 
Men’s Tennis (12-5)
 
Apr. 25th vs. Hartwick, W 5-4
Oneonta State senior Joey Milstein (Slingerlands/Guilderland) secured a 5-4 non-conference victory last Wednesday over city rival Hartwick College.  Milstein won the third set 7-6 (8) over Marcelo Navarro to clinch the match for the Red Dragons.  The Red Dragons are now 12-5 overall with two matches remaining while Hartwick finishes at 2-10 for the year.

Other winners in singles for Oneonta were Joshua Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) at fourth singles and his brother, Adam, at fifth singles.  Both won in straight sets.

In doubles, Oneonta won two of the three matches to hold a 2-1 lead entering singles play.  J. Slifkin and Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook) won at second doubles while Adam Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) and Milstein won at third doubles.
