Baseball (8-8/1-2)
Mar. 24th & 25th at Fredonia, L 1-3; L 1-6; W 6-3
Oneonta scored three runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Fredonia State, 6-3, and salvage the final game of the three-game SUNYAC weekend series at Ludwig Field. The Red Dragons were swept last Saturday by the Blue Devils as both teams opened their conference schedule.
With the score tied at 3-3 in last Sunday's game, the Red Dragons loaded the bases off the losing pitcher on singles by
Ivan Plata (Schenectady/Guilderland),
Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh), and
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane).
Zachary Jordon relieved Grey and induced an infield groundout for the first out of the inning. Oneonta's
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island) then lined one to left that was dropped allowing Plata to score from third with the go-ahead run.
Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) then dropped an RBI single into right and
Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) lofted a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring. Levanduski had three on the 15 hits for Oneonta today. Bouyea, Plata, Knack and Salvatore all collected two hits apiece.
Jarred Bronley (Katonah/Somers) picked up his first collegiate win in relief after Oneonta starter
Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) turned in a strong outing. Bronley recorded the final out of the eighth with the bases loaded and worked out of second-and-third jam in the ninth. Ascher recorded seven strikeouts in his 7-2/3 innings while walking no one.
The Blue Devils trailed 3-0 before breaking through in the last of the eighth off Ascher.
Oneonta head coach
Benjamin Grimm removed Ascher and replaced him with
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush), who walked a batter to force in the first Blue Devil run.
A line drive single up the middle got by the diving second baseman Plata and two runs scored. Bronley then pitched out of further trouble.
In Saturday's doubleheader, Oneonta managed only two runs on the day, dropping game 1, 3-1 and game 2, 6-1. The Red Dragons had only 11 hits total for the two games with only Bouyea registering a multi-hit game in game 1 with a single and a double in four plate appearances.
Senior
Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched all six innings for Oneonta in game one, striking out six batters and not allowing a walk. Freshman
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) threw seven strong innings in game two allowing three earned runs while striking out four.
Mar. 27th vs. Farmingdale State, L 4-5; W 13-1
The Oneonta State baseball team got a strong pitching performance in game 2 from freshman
Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) as they managed a split with visiting Farmingdale State last Tuesday. Jordan went the distance allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out four batters to record his first collegiate win.
Oneonta scored six runs in the bottom of the third to essentially put the game out of reach for Farmingdale. Knack had a two-run double in the inning that scored
Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) and Plata.
Oneonta pounded out 14 hits in game two including two each from seniors
Hitt and
Knack and junior
Salvatore. Knack added a triple and drove in four runs while Hitt and Salvatore drove in two runs apiece.
Jordan cruised through the first three innings not allowing a hit. In the fourth inning a Ram hit a ball deep in the hole at short that he legged out to just beat the throw for the first hit of the game for the Rams. It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Rams scored its only run of the game.
In game 1, the Rams scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead.
Oneonta came back in the home half of the second inning and scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. Knack started the inning with a bunt single to third base, which was followed by single to left field by junior
Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic). Salvatore would then sacrifice knack and Jones up one base. Knack scored the first run on a single by
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Jones scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by
Wells.
After the Rams added a single run in the top of the third inning, the Red Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs. Hitt led off the inning with a triple and scored on a base hit by Plata. Plata moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Jones.
The difference in the first game was a leadoff home run in the seventh.
Mar. 28th vs. Montclair State, L 1-7
The Oneonta State baseball team fell at home last Wednesday to visiting Montclair State 7-1 in non-conference action. A grand slam in the top of the ninth inning by the designated hitter was the final blow in an otherwise close, well-pitched game.
Oneonta starter,
Will Rivas (Babylon/Babylon), had a solid outing and dueled Montclair starter, pitch-for-pitch, trailing 1-0 when he left the game after seven innings of six-hit ball.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh, Oneonta rallied for a run, getting a two-out single from freshman
Charlie MacDowell (Middletown/Minisink Valley) that drove in junior
Salvatore, who hit a one-out double.
The Red Hawks added a single run in the eighth off losing pitcher
Hegmann before the big blow in the ninth off sophomore
Levanduski.
The Red Dragons finished the game with five hits including a pair from senior Knack, who continues to swing a hot bat for the Red Dragons.
Softball (4-8)
Mar. 28th vs. Union, W 11-7; L 2-5
The Oneonta State softball team split with visiting Union College last Wednesday on Red Dragon Softball Field. They defeated the Dutchwomen 11-7 in the first game and fell in game 2, 5-2.
In the first game of the double header, the Red Dragons trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Freshmen
Shannon McQueeney (Dix Hills/Commack) started Oneonta off with a walk, followed by a
Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River) single to left field and a
Laura Campbell (Cold Spring/Haldane) single scored McQueeney and Mahoney. Campbell advanced to third on a fielding error. She later was thrown out trying to score on a
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) single. Sophomore
Stephanie Gaska (Harpursville/Harpursville) knocked in Marzillo with a single and classmate
Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag/Arlington) came into pinch run for her. She later scored on a double by senior
Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie).
Oneonta (4-8) was able to hold the Dutchwomen to no runs in the top of the fourth while plating 4 more runs of their own on a pair of doubles by
Laura Loudis (Loundonville/Colonie Central) and Marzillo. Singles by
Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central), McQueeney and Kendziera helped the Red Dragons go ahead 8-4.
The Red Dragons scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a comfortable 11-4 lead. Union tried to fight back scoring three in the top of seventh but the combination of pitching between starter
Kerry Leggett (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and reliever
Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) was able to hold them. Leggett picked up her third win of the season.
The second game of the double header saw all the runs scored in the first three innings of the game. Union (6-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first. Three singles to start the inning by Lauren Hoffman (Marcy/Whitesboro), Lindsay Cohen (Suffern/Suffern) and Amanda Blake (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) were all it took. A hit batter scored the first run and two more singles brought home the other two.
Oneonta got the score to 3-2 after a Kendziera scored in the first inning on a Deso hit and a McQueeney bomb over the right center fence in the second. Union scored 2 runs in the top of the third to secure their advantage.
Pitcher Sarah Logan (Westfield, MA/Williston Northampton School) allowed five hits in picking up her third win of the season.
Deso finished the afternoon going 4-for-6 with double in game 1.
Men’s Lacrosse (2-5)
Mar. 28th vs. Rensselaer (#15), W 10-8
The Oneonta State men used a stingy defense while making the most of its opportunities in upending #15 Rensselaer last Wednesday at home 10-8. The win for the Red Dragons snapped its three-game losing streak while also handing the Engineers their first loss of the season.
Oneonta topped unbeaten Rensselaer in every statistical category including shots, 39-25 and face-offs, 17-5. Junior
Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) was masterful in the circle winning 17 of 21 face-offs and collecting a team high 12 ground balls. He also added a pair of goals and one assist on the offensive end.
“This is a huge win for our program,” said coach
Dan Mahar. “We did a great job of not giving up any second opportunities and when the ball was on the ground, we got the ground balls. I'm hoping that this game is a stepping stone to becoming the program we want to be.”
Junior
John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) put Oneonta on the scoreboard first with a man-up goal assisted by classmate
Tyler Jennings (Brewerton/Central Square). Two minutes later van de Veerdonk scored an unassisted goal to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The Engineers came back with two unanswered goals to tie the score at the end of the first period.
Oneonta would seize control in the second period with four goals to Rensselaer's one to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Four different Red Dragons scored including freshman
Matthew Knapp (Selden/Newfield), who scored his first collegiate goal to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 lead.
Rensselaer cut into Oneonta's lead in the third period to get to within 8-6 entering the fourth period.
The two teams were even in the final period of play. The Red Dragons were up 9-6 after another man-up goal by DeOrdio at 11:07.
The Engineers battled back to close the gap to one goal with a pair of scores, to make the score 9-8.
Both teams had their opportunities in the closing minutes, but it was van de Veerdonk who gave Oneonta an insurance goal with 1:15 remaining.
Senior
Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) made nine saves in goal for Oneonta today to pick up the win.
Women’s Lacrosse (6-0)
Mar. 23rd vs. St. John Fisher, W 20-13
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team continues to be unbeatable as last Saturday they defeated a solid St. John Fisher team 20-13 to remain undefeated at 5-0. The five wins to begin the season is the first time since 2003 that the Red Dragons have won its first five games out of the gate. In 2003, the women began the season 7-0 en route to an 11-4 mark.
Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes on goals by senior
Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) and freshman
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport). Kissinger would finish the game with four goals while McNally would go on to notch six goals while adding one assist. Freshman McNally continued her torrid scoring pace that has her leading the team with 20, which is an average of four goals per game. She has scored at least three goals in each of her first five collegiate games.
After a goal got St. John Fisher on the scoreboard, Oneonta ran off three straight to push its lead to 5-1. Kissinger had two of the goals while junior
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) added a goal and an assist.
The Cardinals scored another goal to make the score 5-2 before the Red Dragons ripped off three more unanswered to push its lead up to 8-2 with less than seven minutes to go in the first half. McNally scored two of the three goals for Oneonta.
St. John Fisher cut its deficit to five goals at halftime, trailing 10-5. Oneonta held a 19-12 shot advantage and a 10-6 draw control advantage in the opening 30 minutes of play.
A goal at 13:33 into the second half got the Cardinals as close as they would get in the game at 13-10.
Oneonta did a tremendous job of possessing the ball during the final seven minutes of the game while adding five more goals to its total. Senior
Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) was key with a goal and three assists during the final push to victory. Monteith finished the contest with a pair of goals and five assists to match McNally's seven points.
Senior
Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) made eight saves in goal for Oneonta to record her fifth win of the season.
Mar. 27th at Hamilton, W 13-12
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team is still rolling and last Tuesday they defeated nationally ranked Hamilton College on their field, 13-12. The Red Dragons are now 6-0 and beat a Continental squad that had only two losses at home since the start of the 2006 season and who were #17 in this week's IWLCA Div. III poll.
“I am so proud of this team,” said coach Ali Pollock. “They work hard everyday at practice to get better and really hold themselves accountable. We came out hard from the first whistle believing we were going to win and wouldn't accept anything less. They really deserve this win and I hope they enjoy it.”
Junior Tulley posted four goals and one assist to lead the Red Dragon attack. Senior
Monteith added three goals and two assists, and classmate
Kissinger chipped in three goals and an assist for the Red Dragons.
Kissinger, who is currently third in Div. III in draw controls per game, led the team with a game-high nine draw controls.
Oneonta scored the game-winning goal with 4 minutes, 12 seconds remaining when freshman
Nicole Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) netted her eighth goal of the season on an assist from Monteith. Hamilton had several chances to score over the final four minutes, including a free-position attempt with 26 seconds on the clock, but the Continentals were unable to come up with the game-tying goal, and the Red Dragons claimed their first win in the series since 1983.
Hamilton held an 11-10 lead after a goal scored with 11:10 remaining. Monteith tied the score 53 seconds later, and Tulley put the Red Dragons ahead with a goal with 8:24 left. The Continentals pulled even at 12 on a free-position goal with 6:25 to play.
Oneonta led 6-5 at the break. The Red Dragons held an 8-5 lead after a goal by Tulley with 27:59 left, and another by Kissinger with 26:05 to play. But two unassisted tallies, and another goal pulled Hamilton even with 22:12 left.
In the first half, the Continentals went ahead 4-2 on a goal with 14:24 left. Oneonta scored six of the next seven goals spanning halftime to take the 8-5 lead. Tulley sparked the run with a free-position goal with 11:51 left in the half. Kissinger scored all three of her goals during the spurt.
Men’s Track & Field
Mar. 24th at Point Loma Nazarene Collegiate meet, 1st place with 221 points
It was junior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) who picked up where he left off from his indoor season that saw him earn All-American honors in the 60-meter dash. Bernstein won both the 100 & 200-meter dashes in the meet running a personal best 10.60 in the 100 and setting a school record in the 200 of 21.16. The record he broke was set by his coach and seven-time All-American, Oneonta's own Joe Reed.
Bernstein also ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay that set a new school record time of 42.67 that was originally set back during the 2004 season. The other three legs included, seniors
Sean Wren (Delanson/Duanesburg) and
Jesse Dobson (Farmingville/Sachem East) and freshman
Rob Farrell (Carmel/Mahopac).
Individually, Dobson ran two personal best times in the 200 & 400-meter events. He ran 22.81 to finish 4th in the 200 while running 50.09 to finish 4th in the 400. Farrell took 3rd in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.47) and 4th in the 400-meter hurdles (55.86). Wren was 3rd in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.72.
The final two school records that fell for the men were in the 5,000-meter run and the hammer. Junior
John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) crossed the finish line in 15:16.72 to set a new record in the 5,000 while newcomer
Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) threw the hammer 48.84m (160'-3”) to set a new school record in that event.
Women’s Track & Field
Mar. 24th at Point Loma Nazarene Collegiate meet, 3rd place with 152.5 points
Senior
Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) began her final outdoor season with a first place in the discus and a 2nd place finish in the hammer, breaking her own school records in both events. Her distance of 44.78m (146'-11”) won the discus by nearly four meters while her throw of 46.26m (151'-9”) was nearly three meters farther than her previous record mark.
Oneonta went 1-2 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with freshman
Cady Kuzmich (Greenwich/Greenwich) and sophomore
Allison Ryley (LaGrangeville/Arlington) out-performing the field. Kuzmich crossed the line in 11:56.20 while Ryley followed in a time of 11:57.33.
Freshman
Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers/School of the Holy Child) took 3rd place in the 5,000 with a time of 18:17.36. She was followed by sophomore
Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus), who was 4th with a personal best time of 18:34.17 on the track.
Oneonta's final top-4 finisher was junior
Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane), who set a personal best mark in the hammer of 43.92m (144'-1”) in taking 4th in that event.
Men’s Tennis (8-4)
Spring Trip to Florida
vs. Colorado College, L 4-5; vs. North Central, W 8-1;
vs. Whitworth, L 3-6; vs. Bethel, W 8-1
The men lost a close match to open its week in Orlando, Fla. In the match against Colorado College, Oneonta got wins at 3rd doubles while winning at 3rd, 4th and 5th singles. Senior
Joey Milstein (Slingerlands/Guilderland) was a double winner on the day for Oneonta. He won at 4th singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) and was the one half of the 3rd doubles team with
Adam Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) that posted an 8-6 win.
The Red Dragons swept through the doubles and won five of the six singles matches to post the lopsided victory over North Central . Double winners for Oneonta included,

Mackenzie Park (Elmira/Guilderland),
Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook),
A. Slifkin and
Joshua Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)).
In the match against Whitworth, Shapiro and
J. Slifkin won at second doubles, 8-3. Shapiro recorded a win at 3rd singles in straight sets while Slifkin won at 6th singles in three sets.
Against Bethel, Shapiro and Slifkin won again at second doubles, 8-6, while
A. Slifkin and Milstein won at third doubles, 8-7. The Red Dragons swept through all six singles matches for the 8-1 final.
