Women’s Lacrosse (4-0)

Mar. 16, Oneonta vs. Vassar

The Oneonta State women’s lacrosse team held off a late charge by the visiting Vassar Brewers last Friday to pick up a 14-13 win at home.  Junior Caroline Tulley (Malverne, Sacred Heart Academy) had a huge game for the Red Dragons with a career high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead the attack.

Oneonta pushed its one-goal lead to 14-11 with just under six minutes to go in the contest.  Back-to-back goals by freshman Kiera McNally (East Northport, Northport) and Tulley gave the Red Dragons a three-goal advantage with 5:38 remaining.  McNally contributed three goals in the game for Oneonta.

Vassar didn’t go quietly as they scored a pair to cut the Oneonta lead to just a single goal at 14-13 with just 1:02 to go in the game.

Oneonta senior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip, East Islip) won the ensuing draw control and Oneonta was able to control the ball and kill the remaining time to hold on to the win.  In the game, the Red Dragons held a decided advantage in draw controls, 22-7, while outshooting Vassar 37-20.

Oneonta senior Rebecca Monteith (West Islip, West Islip), who is chasing the all-time career goals and points record, had six points in today’s game on three goals and three assists.  With her six points, she moved into a tie for second place on the career point list with 225.

Mar. 17, Oneonta vs. Manhattanville

The Red Dragons scored the first nine goals of the game en route to a lopsided 21-7 victory at home last Saturday versus Manhattanville.  The Red Dragons pushed its early season record to 3-0 with the win while the Valiants fell to 1-5.

Leading the attack for the Red Dragons was McNally and sophomore Alexa Anzalone (Rocky Point, Rocky Point), who each netted four goals.  Through her first three games in a Red Dragon uniform, McNally already has registered 10 goals to lead the team.  McNally scored three of Oneonta’s first five goals in the contest.  She also added two assists for a total of six points.

Matching McNally’s six points was Monteith, who has now moved into second place all by herself with 231 career points.  Monteith had three goals and three assists in today’s game, which matched her output versus Vassar.

Senior Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst, Walter O'Connell Copiague) and sophomore Laura Grose split the game in goal for Oneonta.  Muscietta picked up eight saves in recording her second win of the season.

Mar. 20, Oneonta at Farmingdale

The Red Dragons handed host Farmingdale State its first loss of the season on Tuesday with a 14-13 win in overtime.

Oneonta led 8-4 at the half, behind Monteith's five goals and one assist. Monteith would add another goal and an assist to finish the game with eight points.  McNally scored a pair of unassisted goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to give Oneonta a 10-4 lead, before the Rams scored six unanswered goals to tie the game at 10-10.

Monteith broke the tie with a goal at 10:29 and McNally would add an insurance goal for the Red Dragons for a 12-10 lead. But the Rams were not done as they scored a man-up goal at the 5-minute mark to make it 12-11 and then scored with 2:34 to play to tie the game at 12 apiece forcing the overtime period.

In overtime, the Rams took its first lead of the game, 13-12. A man-up goal by Kissinger, assisted by Monteith, tied the game once again at 13-13, before the game-winner came with 1:07 remaining, scored by Tulley.

Muscietta made nine saves for the win in goal.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-4)

Mar. 13, Oneonta at Hartwick

The visiting Oneonta State Red Dragons got off to a 9-1 lead and never looked back as they defeated cross-city rival Hartwick last Tuesday 15-7.

Junior John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks, Chenango Forks) and senior Blair Hanson (Fayetteville, Fayetteville Manlius) both had three goals apiece to lead the Red Dragons. Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley, Putnam Valley), Daniel Stern (Shoreham, Shoreham-Wading River), Tyler Jennings (Brewerton, Central Square) and Anthony Laureano (Holtsville, Sachem East) all had two scores each. Scott Sorrillo (Montebello, Suffern) scored once.

Hartwick grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the game before the Red Dragons ripped off nine unanswered to go up 9-1 with 13:11 left in the third quarter.

The Red Dragons tacked on five more scores in the final quarter. The Hawks would score three more times including the last two goals of the game to complete the scoring.

Chris Miles (Manlius, Fayetteville Manlius) made 14 saves for the Red Dragons and Ryan Guay relieved him and played the last 3:33 of the game and recorded one save.

Oneonta had a huge advantage in shots, 61-43. They also had a slight edge in groundballs, 35-32. van de Veerdonk had 10 of the team's groundballs. He also won 15 of 20 face offs.

Mar. 19, Oneonta at St. Mary’s (MD)
St. Mary’s 12, Oneonta 6


The men traveled to Maryland this past Monday and were doubled up by St. Mary’s 12-6.

Oneonta claimed the first lead of the game at 13:35 as van de Veerdonk completed a feed from Hanson.  St. Mary’s netted the next two goals to stake a 2-1 lead at 10:41.  The teams headed into the second period tied at 2-2 as Jennings tallied an unassisted goal at 3:36.

The Seahawks held Oneonta scoreless in the second quarter while adding a pair of scores for a 4-2 halftime advantage.

Jennings and van de Veerdonk commanded the Red Dragon attack with two goals each while Hanson dished out two helpers.

Jennings picked up an extra-man goal 18 seconds into the start of the second half following a pass from Stern.  The Seahawks rattled off three unanswered to boast a 7-3 lead at 11:26.  Laureano stopped St. Mary’s run with his third goal of the season at 7:24.  St. Mary’s added one more goal at 1:44 for an 8-4 margin at the end of the third period.

Oneonta again scored the first goal of the period before the Seahawks fired in three unanswered, unassisted goals for an 11-5 lead at 8:39.  Junior Alex Haffner (Northport, Northport) tallied the Red Dragons final goal of the game at 5:12.

Mar. 21, Oneonta vs. Ithaca

The Red Dragons scored five goals in the fourth period, but came up short to nationally ranked Ithaca College Wednesday at home 13-11.  The Red Dragons trailed 12-6 entering the final stanza before putting together the late rally.

Hanson got the Oneonta rally started with a goal just six seconds into the fourth period with an assist from van de Veerdonk, who won the face off before feeding a pass to Hanson.

The rally continued for the Red Dragons as they ripped off three more goals to cut the Ithaca lead to 12-10 with 9:18 remaining in the game.  Nicholas Sorrillo (Montebello, Suffern) scored an unassisted goal before Jennings added back-to-back scores less than two minutes of each other.

Jennings scored his fourth goal of the game with 1:18 to go on a delayed penalty call to pull Oneonta to within a pair.  The Red Dragons won the ensuing face off with the man up and got a shot off that was saved by the Ithaca goalie.

The Bombers held a 7-2 lead before Oneonta scored two late second period goals to head into halftime down 7-4.  Ithaca pulled away in the third quarter, out scoring the Red Dragons 5-2.

Jennings led the Oneonta attack with his four goals while van de Veerdonk added three goals and two assists.

Baseball (4-4)

Saturday, Mar. 17
Oneonta 13, W. Conn State 6

In the opening game of the season last Saturday, Oneonta pounded out 19 hits in defeating Western Connecticut 13-6.  Juniors Rob Peluso (Rensselaer, Columbia) and Matt Salvatore (Staten Island, Staten Island) combined for seven hits and six runs batted in to lead the offensive assault.  Senior Chris Tyson (Niskayuna, Niskayuna) went five innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits to pick up his first win of the season.  The win was also Coach Ben Grimm’s first as a collegiate head coach.

Sunday, Mar. 18

On Sunday, Oneonta split a doubleheader with Plymouth State, winning the first game 3-2 before losing 7-6 in game two.  The Red Dragons rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.  Junior Nate Jones (Apalachin, Seton Catholic) had the game-winning hit with the bases loaded as he singled just over second base to score Bouyea.  Junior Jim Hegmann (Middletown, Pine Bush) picked up the win in game one, throwing 2-2/3 scoreless innings.

Monday, Mar. 19
Colby 4, Oneonta 2 (game 1)
Oneonta 5, Colby 2 (game 2)

Monday Oneonta split a pair of games with Colby College.  They dropped the first game, 4-2, before bouncing back in game two with a four-run seventh inning to win 5-2.  A couple of fielder’s choices with the bases loaded drove in two of the runs while Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh) drove in the final run of the inning.  Senior Eric Wells (Athens, PA, Athens) collected three hits in the game for Oneonta.  Freshman Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY, Mattituck) went the distance, striking out four batters, to record his first collegiate win.

Tuesday, Mar. 20
Wooster 4, Oneonta 1

Oneonta played a solid Wooster squad and were trailing 2-1 before the Fighting Scots pushed across two runs in the 7th inning en route to the 4-1 final.  Freshman Alex Mastrianni (Valatie, Ichabod Crane) threw six solid innings allowing only six hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters in his first collegiate start.  Bouyea had two of Oneonta’s six hits in the game.

Wednesday, Mar. 21

The Red Dragons bounced back in game two versus Bethel to earn a split.  Junior Dean Haussel (Sound Beach, Miller Place), senior Kevin Knack (Ghent, Ichabod Crane), Jones and junior Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville, Voorheesville) all had two hits in the first game.  Massaroni drove in three runs while Salvatore drove in a pair.

In game two, Peluso, Haussel, Bouyea, Knack and sophomore Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights, Thomas Edison) collected two hits each as Oneonta had twelve hits in the game.  Knack went deep in the sixth inning for the first home run of the season for the Red Dragons.  Junior Thomas Hand (Wallkill, Valley Central) picked up his first win of the season throwing three innings in relief of starter Tyson.

Softball (3-5)

Sunday, Mar. 18
Wisconsin-Eau Claire 3, Oneonta 1
Manchester 10, Oneonta 3

Oneonta dropped its first two games to start the trip.  They lost a close 3-1 game to Wisconsin-Eau Claire while falling to Manchester (IN), 10-4.  The Red Dragons managed only four hits in its loss to Wisconsin while they committed five errors in its loss to Manchester.  Freshman Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore, Bay Shore) drove in two runs versus Manchester.

Monday, Mar. 19

The Red Dragons got two strong pitching performances to lead them to the victories, which evened its early season record at 2-2.

In the 6-1 win versus Colby, it was freshman Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River, Pearl River) who went the distance allowing only three hits while striking out five batters as she recorded her first collegiate win.  O’Flynn also helped herself at the plate with a two-out, two-run single to cap a four-run sixth to give the Red Dragons some breathing room.

Sophomore Stephanie Gaska (Harpursville, Harpursville) had a pair of hits and two runs batted in while classmate Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis, Port Jervis) added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Versus Lawrence, sophomore Kerry Leggett (Ballston Lake, Shenendehowa) struck out nine batters en route to picking up her first win of the season, 4-1.  She allowed five hits and one earned run over seven innings.

The offensive standout for Oneonta was Marzillo, who went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.  Gaska added two more hits as did sophomore Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag, Arlington) and freshman Brianna Rivera (Pomona, North Rockland).

Tuesday, Mar. 20
Wisconsin-Platteville 6, Oneonta 3
St. Thomas (MN) 6, Oneonta 5

Against Platteville, Oneonta had nine hits led by a pair of hits each by senior Kalyn Deso (Schenectady, South Colonie) and freshman Laura Campbell (Cold Spring, Haldane).  The Red Dragons scored single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings.

Versus St. Thomas, Oneonta left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th in the loss.  The game was tied 3-3 after the Red Dragons scored three runs in the bottom of the third.  The big hit in the inning was a two-out, two-run double by freshman Nicole Brieva (Kings Park, Kings Park).  A three-run 5th for St. Thomas proved to be the difference in the game.

Thursday, Mar. 22
William Paterson 6, Oneonta 4 (9 inn)
Oneonta 3, St. Catherine 2

The Red Dragons battled to the end, but came up short in extra innings.  The score was tied 2-2 after seven innings, which necessitated the extra frames.  William Paterson scored two in the top half of the eighth before Oneonta came back with a pair of runs in its half of the inning to force another inning.  Laura Campbell got things started with an RBI single to drive in senior Meg Beditz (Troy, Troy) from second base.  Campbell was then sacrificed to second by classmate Shannon McQueeney (Dix Hills, Commack) before stealing third.  Campbell scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice.  William Paterson scored two more runs in the top of the ninth inning for the final margin of victory.

Leggett had another solid performance on the mound in the win versus St. Catherine.  She went the distance allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out seven batters.  Gaska hit her first collegiate home run in the top of the second to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.  Oneonta added a single run in the seventh to hold a 3-1 lead.  St. Catherine scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on third base before the Red Dragons ended the game with a 5-3-2 double play getting the runner at the plate.

Men’s Tennis (7-3)

Monday, Mar. 19 vs. Colorado College
Colorado College 5, Oneonta 4

The men lost a close match to open its week in Orlando, Fla.  Oneonta got wins at 3rd doubles while winning at 3rd, 4th and 5th singles.  Senior Joey Milstein (Slingerlands, Guilderland) was a double winner on the day for Oneonta.  He won at 4th singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) and was the one half of the 3rd doubles team with Adam Slifkin (Flushing, Nordhoff (CA)) that posted an 8-6 win.

Wednesday, Mar. 21 vs. North Central

The Red Dragons swept through the doubles and won five of the six singles matches to post the lopsided victory.  Double winners for Oneonta included, David Goldberg (Scarsdale, Scarsdale), Mackenzie Park (Elmira, Guilderland), Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway, Lynbrook), Adam Slifkin and Joshua Slifkin (Flushing, Nordhoff (CA)).

Women’s Tennis (8-7)

Monday, Mar. 19 vs. Colorado College

The Red Dragons opened its spring trip with a set back to Colorado College.  The lone point in the match was posted at first doubles by Danielle Browarski (Colonie, Colonie) and Lauren Skolnick (Sayville, Sayville).

Tuesday, Mar. 20 vs. Hamilton
Hamilton 7, Oneonta 2

Browarski paced the Red Dragons in defeat with a win at first singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) while posting a win with her partner Skolnick 8-6.
