Mar. 9th & 10th at NCAA Championships at Grinnell College
Oneonta State junior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) earned All-American honors last Saturday after finishing 7th at the NCAA Div. III championships hosted by Grinnell College. Bernstein crossed the line in 6.91 seconds, which was the exact time that he ran to qualify for the meet. Last night in the preliminaries, he ran a personal best time of 6.90 to qualify for the finals.
Bernstein becomes the fourth male to earn All-American honors as an individual in indoor track & field. The Red Dragons have had three relays earn All-American honors previously including a national championship in 2009. This was Bernstein's first appearance at the national championships.
Bernstein doubled up during the SUNYAC championships, winning both the 60 and 200-meter dashes, setting a conference record in the latter. His indoor season earned him selection as the NCAA Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year, which was announced last Thursday evening at the championship banquet. His coach, Joe Reed, himself a 7-time All-American and national champion during his career at Oneonta, was selected as the Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Seniors
Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill/Beacon) and
Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) participated in the NCAA Championships this past weekend held by Grinnell College.
Brunetto qualified in the 800m Run. She finished 11
th at the championship meet in a time of 2:15.36. Timmons meet the requirements in the weight throw. She came in 14
th overall with a toss of 15.96m (52’ 4 ½”).
The women’s track and field team has two weeks off before starting their outdoor seasons in California during their spring training trip. The team will be competing at the Point Loma Nazarene University Collegiate on March 24
th.
Men’s Lacrosse (1-2/0-0)
Mar. 13th at Hartwick, W 15-7
The Oneonta State Red Dragons got off to a 9-1 lead and never looked back as they defeated cross-city rival Hartwick last Tuesday 15-7 at Wright Stadium.
John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) and
Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville Manlius) both had three goals apiece to lead the Red Dragons.
Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley), Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River), Tyler Jennings (Brewerton/Central Square) and
Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) all had two scores each.
Scott Sorrillo (Montebello/Suffern) scored once.
Hartwick grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the game at the 10:48 mark of the opening quarter. The Red Dragons would then rip off nine unanswered score to go up 9-1 with 13:11 left in the third quarter.
The Oneonta scoring streak when the Hawks scored their second goal of the game to make it 9-2 at 11:16. Less than seven minutes later, Hartwick made it a 9-3 game.
The Red Dragons tacked on five more scores in the final quarter. The Hawks would score three more times including the last two goals of the game to complete the scoring.
Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) had 14 saves for the Red Dragons.
Ryan Guay (Middle Grove/Saratoga Springs) relieved him and played the last 3:33 of the game and recorded one save.
Oneonta had a huge advantage in shots, 61-43. They also had a slight edge in groundballs, 35-32. van de Veerdonk had 10 of the team's groundballs. He also won 15 of 20 face offs.
Men’s Tennis (6-2)
Mar. 14th at Elmira, W 9-0
The Oneonta State men’s tennis team started their spring season off with a bang as they went on the road last Wednesday to defeat Elmira 9-0.
As a team, the Red Dragons only dropped 13 points between the six singles matches and the three doubles matches.
The duo of freshman
David Goldberg (Scarsdale/Scarsdale) and senior
Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook) and opened with a 1
st doubles win by a score of 8-0.
Mackenzie Park(Elmira/Guilderland) and
Joey Milstein (Slingerlands/Guilderland) echoed the score with an 8-0 victory at 2
nd doubles. The freshman-senior combination of
Zachary Dodd (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) and
Joshua Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) also claimed victory with a 8-3 score at 3
rd doubles.
Goldberg, Shapiro, Park, Milstein and Slifkin also picked up victories in singles action. Senior
Adam Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) earned the final point for the Red Dragons when he won 6-1, 6-2 over his opponent.
