Men’s Basketball (2-19/1-13)
Feb. 3rd at Brockport, L 62-85
Feb. 4th at Geneseo, L 57-67
The Oneonta State men's basketball team dropped a pair of road games this past weekend at Brockport and Geneseo. The Red Dragons fell last Friday night to Brockport 85-62 while coming out on the short end of a 67-57 score last Saturday versus Geneseo. The men are now 2-19 overall and 1-13 in the SUNYAC, but are still in the hunt for the eighth spot in the SUNYAC tournament.
In Saturday's game versus Geneseo, junior
Nick Sarchioto (Duanesburg/Bishop Gibbons) scored a collegiate career high 21 points to lead Oneonta. The game saw three ties and 10 lead changes, but in the end, it was Geneseo who had a big advantage in the paint, outscoring the Red Dragons 38-16. Both teams shot 43 percent from the floor in the contest. The Blue Knights did hold a 15-4 advantage in free throws, which proved huge in the end as Geneseo made 7-of-8 down the stretch.
Oneonta's last lead came right at the beginning of the second half when
Alby Skrelji (Hastings on Hudson/Hastings) made a jump shot to give them a 29-28 lead. The Red Dragons got as close as two points at 47-45 on a jumper by Sarchioto with 7:30 remaining in the game.
Last Friday night versus Brockport, Oneonta had three players in double figures led by a season high 14 points by junior
Dan McLaren (Troy/Troy). Sophomore
Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and freshman
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) each added 11 points.
Oneonta shot only 36 percent including 3-of-17 from three-point range while turning the ball over 22 times. They did hit 23-of-27 from the charity stripe, but the Brockport bench outscored Oneonta's 44-22.
Women’s Basketball (14-6/12-2)
Feb. 3rd at Brockport, W 82-46
The Oneonta State women's basketball team jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and never looked back en route to a lopsided 82-46 victory at Brockport last Friday night. The Red Dragons had four players reach double figures including season best games for junior
Kate Wilverding (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) and freshman
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston). Oneonta is now 13-6 overall and 11-2 in the SUNYAC while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-16 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
Oneonta dominated in all aspects of the night's contest. The Red Dragons held a decided advantage in bench scoring thanks to Wilverding's 16 points off the bench. Wilverding hit 5-of-6 shots including 4-of-5 from long range in 19 minutes of action.
Longto, who scored 14 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting, helped Oneonta to a 24-18 advantage in the paint. The Red Dragons also scored 19 points off 16 Brockport turnovers while committing a season low seven turnovers.
Senior
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) led all scorers in the game with 18 points. Classmate
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) added 10 points for Oneonta.
Feb. 4th at Geneseo, W 68-61
The Oneonta State women's basketball completed a weekend sweep in the Rochester area with its 68-61 win today versus Geneseo. Senior
Slagle led all scorers with 18 points as Oneonta out another game down the stretch.
After a
Szkotak jumper tied the score at 15 apiece at the 9:30 mark of the first half, the Red Dragons took control en route to building a 31-19 halftime lead. Geneseo had a cold first half shooting, hitting only 22 percent from the field.
The Blue Knights came out of halftime and scored the first eight points to cut Oneonta's lead to four points. A three-pointer capped the run of eight unanswered.
A three-point basket got Geneseo to within two points at 36-34 at the 15:21 mark before Oneonta countered with eight unanswered, capped by a Szkotak jumper.
A 20-9 run by the hosts, gave them a 54-53 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. After a pair of free throws three minutes later, Geneseo held its last lead at 56-55.
An old fashioned three-point play by Slagle, who was fouled on a made jump shot gave Oneonta the lead for good. Down the stretch, the Red Dragons converted 8-of-10 free throws to secure the seven-point victory.
Szkotak would finish the game with 12 points while sophomore
Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) added 11 points off the bench for Oneonta. Freshman center, Longto, seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Oneonta remains in first place in the SUNYAC with its 12-2 record. The Red Dragons are a ½ game ahead of Buffalo State, who is 11-2, as they also picked up a pair of wins this weekend.
Wrestling (9-9)
Feb. 4th at Wesleyan College
vs. Plymouth State, W 33-13; vs. Williams, W 36-14; vs. Wesleyan 21-10
The Oneonta State wrestling team won 2-of-3 matches today at Wesleyan University to end its dual-meet schedule for the year. The Red Dragons defeated both Plymouth State and Williams College to finish an even 9-9 overall. Oneonta will now prepare its lineup for the ECWC tournament at Brockport on Saturday, Fe. 25. The ECWC tournament is the NCAA Div. III tournament qualifier.
Leading the way for Oneonta on the day were sophomores
Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown),
Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) and
Ben Mikac (Lackawanna/Williamsville East). Both Smith and Graff went a perfect 3-0 while Mikac won a pair of matches.
Smith's first win of the day was a pin against Zac Giovannetti of Plymouth in 2:07. He then had a forfeit win in the Williams match and xclosed the day with a 5-4 decision versus Luke Erickson of Wesleyan.
Graff had a 6-5 decision win in the Plymouth match followed by a tech fall versus Williams and a major decision in the Wesleyan match.
Both Mikac's wins came by pin including one in the first minute of action versus Alex Cronin of Plymouth.
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
Feb. 4th at Springfield College Invitational, 2nd with 121.5 points
The Oneonta State men’s track & field squad competed last Saturday at the Springfield College Invitational. The team finished second overall with 121.5 points in the final team standings. Amherst College won the men's title with 134 points.
Juniors
Dustin Cox (Pulaski/Pulaski) and
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) won individual events for Oneonta. Cox won the high jump with a height of 1.86m (6'-1.25”). Bernstein won the 60-meter dash for a third straight week. His winning time in the finals was 7.05 seconds.
Senior
Jesse Dobson (Farmingville/Sachem East) had a solid day for the Red Dragons, recording a pair of personal best times in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. In the 200, he crossed the line in a time of 23.41 while recording a time of 51.89 in the 400. His performances earned him a third place and fifth place respectively.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
Feb. 4th at Springfield College Invitational, 4th with 132 points
The Oneonta State women’s track & field squad competed last Saturday at the Springfield College Invitational. They scored 132 points and finished in fourth place in the final team standings. The hosts took the women's side with 175 points.
The highlight of the meet for the Red Dragons was the performance of senior
Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) in the 20-lbs. weight throw. Not only did she shatter her own school record in the event by nearly two meters, but she moved from 7th to 1st in Div. III with just over one month out from the National championships.
Timmons won the event with a toss of 18.40 meters (60'-4.50”), which crushed her school record of 16.75 meters (54'-11.50”). Her performance is currently at the top of Div. III by nearly three feet.
Timmons also was third in the shot put with a distance of 11.38 meters (37'-4”).
Freshman
Kenya Outram (Brooklyn/Victory Collegiate) had a breakout day for Oneonta, placing in the top three in three individual events. She was second in both the 60-meter hurdles and the long jump while taking third place in the high jump. She ran a time of 9.65 in the hurdles, cleared 1.50m (4'-11”) in the high jump and jumped a distance of 4.90m (16'-1”) in the long jump.
