Men’s Basketball (3-22/2-16 SUNYAC)
Feb. 17th vs. New Paltz, L 64-66
A Hawk hit a runner with 1.3 seconds remaining in the game to lift visiting New Paltz to a 66-64 win last Friday versus Oneonta State.
Oneonta had the ball with 31 seconds to go and point guard
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) with the ball in his hands. Kelly kept the ball alive until the clock had 10 seconds left before making a move to the basket. He didn't convert on the layup and the rebound was awarded to New Paltz.
Kelly tied his season high of 21 points in leading three players in double figures for Oneonta. He also added five assists and four steals.
Kelly gave Oneonta a 43-42 lead when he made a jumper at the 14:47 mark of the second half. The Red Dragons added back-to-back layups to increase its lead to 47-42.
New Paltz battled back and took a 50-49 lead on a three-pointer.
A pair of free throws gave the Hawks a six point lead at 57-51 with 7:32 remaining.
Oneonta didn't quit and a three-point basket by sophomore
Kevin Donahue (South Glens Falls/South High) tied the score again at 62 apiece at the 2:42 mark.
The last tie came at 64-64 when Oneonta junior
Cameron Boyden (Vestal/Vestal) made a layup. Boyden finished the game with 11 points.
Women’s Basketball (17-8/14-4 SUNYAC)
Feb. 17th vs. New Paltz, L 44-49 OT
Last Friday night's overtime thriller came as advertised between two of the top teams in the SUNYAC battling for key spots in next week's conference tournament. When the final buzzer sounded it was the visiting Hawks that came out on top in this one 49-44.
A Hawk player who hit two big three-pointers in the extra period to lead the way.
Oneonta got as close as 46-44 on a basket by
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) with 1:38 remaining in overtime, but the Hawks held on defensively and made 3-of-5 free throws down the stretch for the final margin of victory.
New Paltz seemed to have control of the game with a 32-25 with 9:26 remaining in the game. A pair of free throws put the Hawks ahead by seven points. In the game, New Paltz had 19 offensive rebounds overall.
It was at that point that Oneonta flipped a switch and ran off 13 unanswered points to seize the momentum and it's first lead of the game. The run was capped with a free throw by sophomore
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland), which gave the Red Dragons a 38-32 lead with 5:50 left. Pappalardo finished the contest with nine points before fouling out in the final minute of overtime.
A layup at the 5:13 ended the scoring drought for New Paltz. Three minutes later, the Hawks pulled to within one at 38-37 on a three-pointer.
A Szkotak basket at 2:18 gave Oneonta a 40-37 lead. Szkotak was one of two players in double figures tonight for Oneonta, finishing with 11 points. Classmate
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) added 11 points as well.
Another three-pointer tied the game at 40 apiece. That would be the last basket of regulation as neither team could get the go-ahead basket. Oneonta had the final possession of the game with six seconds remaining, but a pass by Pappalardo was knocked away and went out of bounds with one-tenth of a second left.
Feb. 20th vs. Oswego, W 53-40 (SUNYAC Tournament Quarterfinals)
The Oneonta State women's basketball season will continue on Friday night after defeating Oswego 53-40 in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC tournament. Oneonta will face New Paltz at Buffalo State in the first semifinal beginning at 6pm.
Oneonta will be making its fifth straight appearance in the semifinals of the tournament under coach
Daphne Thompson. Last year the Red Dragons fell in the championship game to Geneseo.
"This was a great team win for us tonight," commented Thompson after the game. "We have proven this year that we are a deep team. We don't need big performances, we just need everyone to do what they are capable of doing."
In the end, it was the play of the Oneonta bench that contributed heavily to the victory. The Red Dragon reserves out-scored Oswego's bench 25-10. Leading the way was sophomore
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford), who scored 13 points in 22 minutes of action. She scored 10 points in the opening half to help the Red Dragons build a commanding 35-17 lead at halftime.
As a team, Oneonta shot 35 percent from the floor including 48 percent in the first half when they built their big lead. The Red Dragons also forced 23 turnovers and turned them into 21 points.
The Lakers did make a couple of runs in the game, but couldn't get closer than 11 points in the second half.
Oswego's most dangerous run came in the opening half when they trailed 17-5. The Lakers scored nine unanswered points to cut Oneonta's lead to 17-14 at the 8:23 mark.
Oneonta countered and closed the final eight minutes of the first half out scoring the Lakers 18-3 to head into the break up 35-17.
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
Feb. 18th at NYU Team Challenge at NY Armory, 2nd place
The Oneonta State men’s track & field team traveled back to New York City last Saturday to compete in the NYU Team Challenge. The men came away with a 2nd place finish out of nine.
The men had two individuals set school records during competition. Junior
Chris Harvey (Kings Park/Kings Park) set a new school record in the 3,000-meter run while newcomer
Nick Perugini (Ridge/Longwood) broke his own school record in the pole vault. Harvey, who finished 2nd in the event, ran 8:39.94, which broke the old record of 8:44 by nearly five seconds. Perugini got to 4.10m to better his early season mark of 3.95m.
Freshman
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) had personal best performances in both throwing events yesterday. He was 2nd in the 35-lb. weight throw with a distance of 15.79m and was 4th in the shot put at 13.54m.
Junior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) turned in another personal best time in the 60-meter dash. He placed 2nd overall in a time of 6.91 seconds, which is currently the 7th fastest time in Div. III.
Sophomore
Jermanine Miller (Elmira/Southside), fresh off the conference swimming & diving championships a week ago, took 1st place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.59, which qualified him for the SUNYAC championships next weekend. Miller will most likely compete in this event along with the long and triple jump for Oneonta in the conference championships.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
Feb. 18th at NYU Team Challenge at NY Armory, 6th place
The Oneonta State women’s track & field team traveled back to New York City last Saturday to compete in the NYU Team Challenge. The women came away 6th place finish out of 11 teams.
Highlighting the women's competition for the Red Dragons was a new school record and four ECAC qualifiers.
Rookie
Kenya Outram (Brooklyn/Victory Collegiate) continued her steady improvement by setting a new school record in the 60 hurdles. Her time of 9.45 was good enough for 5th in the event while reaching the ECAC qualifying standard.
Senior
Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill/Beacon) ran in the Elite 800-meter event and came away 5th in a time of 2:15.43. The race included three Elite Club runners and two Div. I runners.
Freshman
Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) ran a personal best time of 3:06.06 in finishing 4th in the 1,000-meter run. Her time was also good enough to qualify her for the ECAC championships.
The foursome of senior
Lacie Newland (Gloversville/Gloversville), sophomores
Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) and
Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) and freshman
Jounia Saint-Juste (Spring Valley/Ramapo) were 3rd in the 4x200-meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:49.79.
