Men’s Basketball (1-5/0-2 SUNYAC)

Nov. 30th at Buffalo State, L 64-85
Dec. 1st at Fredonia, L 66-72
Despite 25 points from freshman Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane), the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team fell to Fredonia last Saturday 72-66 on the road.  For Zuvic, it was the third game this season that he has scored more than 20 points.  This game was his high water mark in the early season, as he previously scored 22 and 21 points.  Zuvic hit 10-of-15 shots including 3-of-3 from behind the arc.

Oneonta held a 37-31 lead at halftime.  A free throw by freshman Seth Thomsen (South New Berlin/Norwich) gave the Red Dragons its largest lead of the game, 48-39, with 10:53 remaining in the contest.

Fredonia scored 15 unanswered points to take a lead that they wouldn't relinquish.  Fredonia had four players in double figures today and hit 10-of-22 from long range.  The Blue Devils outscored Oneonta 41-29 in the second half.

Sophomores Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) and Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) each scored in double figures for Oneonta.  Mager had 11 points and six rebounds.  Kelly scored 10 points, collected eight boards and dished out five assists.

Last Friday, senior NNick Sarchioto (Duanesburg/Bishop Gibbons) scored 18 points and Zuvic had 12 points, but the Red Dragons fell to Buffalo State, 85-64, in the SUNYAC opener for both squads.  Zuvic also added a game high 11 rebounds.  The Red Dragons shot 40 percent from the floor, but only connected on 2-of-13 from behind the arc.

Dec. 4th vs. Skidmore, L 63-66
SUNY Oneonta sophomore Mager had an open look at the buzzer, but the shot hit the front of the rim as the game ended with the Red Dragons coming up short last Tuesday at home versus Skidmore 66-63.  The Thoroughbreds overcame a four-point halftime deficit and shot 50 percent in the second half to leave town with the victory.

Oneonta had four players in double figures led by Mager and freshman Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster), who each scored 14 points.  Junior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and freshman Zuvic each scored 13 points in the game.

After shooting 50 percent in the first half including hitting 5-of-10 from behind the arc, Skidmore opened the second half with a 14-5 run to gain the lead 50-45.  They never trailed again and led by as many as nine points at the 9:55 mark.

Oneonta made a run at Skidmore and cut their lead to a pair on a basket by Zuvic with 6:38 to go, as the score was 60-58 in favor of the Thoroughbreds.

Six unanswered points by Skidmore over the next five minutes gave them a comfortable lead before Mager buried a three to make the score 66-61 with just over a minute to play.

A turnover by Skidmore led to a Kelly basket at the other end for Oneonta, which made the score 66-63.  A missed jumper at the other end gave Oneonta the ball for the last shot.  They called a timeout with five seconds remaining to set up the final play.

Oneonta trailed at the half 35-23 after only shooting 28 percent from the floor.  The Red Dragons cut into the Blue Devils lead in the second half, but couldn't get any closer than seven points with 6:17 remaining in the game when Mulligan made a pair of free throws.

Fredonia outrebounded the Red Dragons 48-34 including 19 off the offensive glass.

Dec. 5th University of Rochester, L 51-61
Despite not scoring a field goal over the final 8:40, the visiting Rochester Yellowjackets held off the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in non-conference women's basketball action last Wednesday evening.  A big first half by Rochester was the difference in the contest, as they built a 41-28 lead that led them to the road victory.

A three-point basket by junior Pappalardo got Oneonta to within six points with 2:06 remaining in the contest.  Pappalardo finished the game with nine points.

Rochester iced the game by hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Oneonta fell behind by as many as 18 points in the second half, but battled their way back into the game with tough defense.  The Red Dragons forced 23 turnovers in the game, which led to 25 points.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Dec. 1st at Cornell University Relays
The SUNY Oneonta men’s track & field team opened its indoor season last Saturday at the Cornell Relays.  There were plenty of highlights and personal marks that fell at the non-scoring meet to kick off the track & field season.

The biggest splash came when freshman Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia) shattered the 60-meter hurdle record in his debut meet, as he won the title in the event.  His time of 8.15 bettered his mark of 8.23, which he ran in the preliminaries.  The record in the event was actually reset three times on the day.  Teammate and defending SUNYAC champion, sophomore Rob Farrell (Carmel/Mahopac), broke his own mark of 8.53 in the preliminaries when he clocked an 8.47.  Alviene then broke that mark in his prelim and then broke it again in the final.  Farrell ran 8.35 in the final of the event, which bettered his own personal best mark set in the prelims.

The one other school record that went down yesterday was the shot put record, as sophomore J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) went one meter further in setting the new mark for the event.  Roth recorded a distance of 15.37 meters (50'-5.25”) in placing second overall in the event.  The old mark of 14.38 was set back in 2009.  Roth also placed seventh in the 35-lb. weight throw with a distance of 15.54m (51'-0”).

Roth and junior Joe Fox (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) both had ECAC qualifying performances in the shot put.  Fox, who also went past the school record in the event, finished sixth with a distance of 14.52m (47'-7.75”).

Other highlights for the men included ECAC qualifying performances in the 4x800-meter relay and senior Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and freshman Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) running ECAC qualifying times in the 60-meter dash.  Bernstein, who is a returning All-American in the 60 meters, ran a time of 6.98 in placing seventh in the event.  Carr ran a time of 6.96 to finish fifth in the event.  Bernstein also ran a personal best time of 34.92 in finishing third in the 300-meter dash.
