Women’s Basketball (3-2)
Nov. 17th vs. New Jersey City, W 54-48 (Wheaton College Tip Off Tournament)
Nov. 18th at Wheaton, W 57-49 (Wheaton College Tip Off Tournament)
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team held its opponents to under 33 percent shooting in back-to-back games two weekends ago to capture the championship of the Wheaton (MA) Tip-off tournament. The Red Dragons defeated host Wheaton 57-49 in the championship game.
Junior
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player while classmate
Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) was named to the All-Tournament Team. In the contest, Schilling scored 14 points to lead Oneonta while adding seven steals. Pappalardo scored 13 points to go with four assists, two blocks and seven steals.
Oneonta fell behind 16-9 in the first 10 minutes of the game before the Red Dragons ran off 13 unanswered to take a six point lead 22-16 at the 6:53 mark on a steal and layup by Schilling.
Oneonta built its five-point halftime lead into a 12 point advantage on a three-point basket by freshman
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) at 11:41 of the second half. Loomis finished the game with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The Red Dragons defense forced 28 turnovers and had 20 steals and eight blocks along with shooting 46 percent from the field. Oneonta hit 7-of-16 from behind the arc including three by Pappalardo.
Oneonta opened the tournament with a 54-48 victory over New Jersey City University. Oneonta trailed early 10-0 before turning it around en route to grabbing a 27-18 lead at halftime. Oneonta forced 22 turnovers in the game and collected 11 steals.
Pappalardo led Oneonta with 18 points while Schilling added 11 points, four assists and four steals. Sophomore
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) contributed nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
Nov. 26th at Utica College, W 59-29
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team held host Utica College to eight points in the second half en route to a 59-29 rout on the road last Monday. The Red Dragons collected 15 steals and blocked 12 shots and held the Pioneers to 18 percent shooting in picking up its third straight win.
Leading three Oneonta players in double figures was junior
Pappalardo with 16 points. She hit four of the Red Dragons six three pointers. She also collected six boards and three steals.
After Utica scored the opening basket of the second half to cut the Oneonta lead to 30-23, the Red Dragons put the game out of reach with 13 unanswered points to take a commanding 43-23 lead. Freshman
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) hit a jumper at the 13:25 mark to give Oneonta its largest lead of the game to that point. Price finished the game with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with a team high six steals.
Oneonta trailed early on 9-6, before a 15-0 run by the Red Dragons gave them the lead for good. Oneonta held a 30-21 lead at halftime.
Junior
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) rounded out Oneonta's double figure scorers with 10 points.
Nov. 28th vs. Hartwick, L 38-48
Hartwick had two players in double digits as they defeated SUNY Oneonta 48-38 last Wednesday night in the Dewar Arena on the campus of Oneonta. The overall difference in the game was at the free throw line as Hartwick outscored Oneonta (3-2), 18-6.
After trailing by a point at halftime, 21-20, Hartwick scored the first four points of the second half and never trailed again. They steadily built its lead through the first 10 minutes of the second half to a 31-24 advantage. Their biggest lead of the game was when the final buzzer sounded.
Freshman
Price led Oneonta with 11 points. She also collected seven boards. Junior
Pappalardo scored nine points while dishing out five assists.
Oneonta jumped out to an early 9-2 lead on the strength of seven unanswered points after the game was tied at two apiece. A jumper from junior
Crawford capped the spurt.
A jump shot by Hartwick at the 10:05 mark tied the score at 12 apiece.
The two teams battled closely over the final 10 minutes with four lead changes. The final lead of the half was 21-20 in favor of the Red Dragons.
Men’s Basketball (1-2)
Nov. 16th at Scranton, L 55-63 (Radisson Invitational Tournament at Scranton)
Nov. 17th vs. York College, W 92-77 (Radisson Invitational Tournament at Scranton)
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team shot lights out in defeating the York (PA) Spartans, 92-77, in the consolation game of the Radisson Invitational hosted by the University of Scranton. The win for Oneonta earned them a weekend split to open the season. Last night, the Red Dragons fell to host Scranton 63-55.
Oneonta shot 64 percent from the field inthe win including 59 percent from long range. The Red Dragons hit 16-of-27 from three-point range, which included a perfect 5-of-5 from sophomore
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South). Mager finished the game with 21 points and nine boards after putting in 14 points and grabbing 16 rebounds last night versus Scranton. His two-game performance earned him All-Tournament honors.
Making his debut in a big way this past weekend was freshman
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) who had back-to-back games of 21 and 22 points to lead Oneonta. He scored 22 points in 24 minutes, as he hit 10-of-13 shots from the field.
Oneonta led by as many as 12 points in the first half, as they took a 51-44 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Red Dragons built its lead to 17 points on a basket by Zuvic at the 9:13 mark, which put Oneonta ahead 80-63.
In addition to Zuvic and Mager, junior
Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) and sophomore
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) reached double figures with 12 points and 14 points respectively. Kelly also added 12 assists to become the first player since 1979 to dish out that many assists in a game.
In the previous night's loss to Scranton, Oneonta had a 32-28 lead at halftime, but only hit 8-of-28 shots in the second half in the eight point loss. The Red Dragons only went to the foul line seven times opposed to 28 times for the hosts. Despite hitting all seven, the Royals made 21 from the charity stripe.
Zuvic and Mager were the only Red Dragons in double figures in the contest.
Nov. 28th vs. Hartwick, L 39-70
The visiting Hartwick Hawks had three players in double figures and shot 54 percent from the field en route to a 70-39 win against SUNY Oneonta.
Sophomore Mager led Oneonta with 10 points to go with five rebounds.
Hartwick built its 19-point halftime lead quickly to 25 points in the opening four minutes of the second half.
After jumping out to an early 10-5 lead, the Hawks scored 11 unanswered to take a 16-10 lead.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
Nov. 17th & 18th at North Country Invitational, 1st with 786 points
The SUNY Oneonta women’s swimming & diving team dominated the two-day North Country Invitational en route to team title. The women doubled up on the next closest competitor with 786 points, as they won its ninth consecutive team championship .
On the women's side it was freshman
Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) who led the way with three first place finishes. She won the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.91), the 1650-yard freestyle (18:19.00) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:52.98) to collect 48 points.
Next was junior
Chandler Shepard (Delhi/Delaware Academy), who won a pair of individual events while finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. She took first place in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 26.07 and 56.73 respectively.

Men’s Swimming & Diving
Nov. 17th & 18th at North Country Invitational, 1st with 584 points
The SUNY Oneonta men’s swimming & diving team dominated the two-day North Country Invitational en route to team titles on both sides. The men accumulated 584 points in winning its fourth straight title.
The only multi-event winner on the men's side was junior
Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside), who won the 1-meter, 6-dive and 3-meter, 6-dive events. Miller scored 267.00 points in winning the 1-meter event while he scored 251.70 points in winning the 3-meter event.
Single event winners for the men included, sophomore
Colton Roe (Middletown/Pine Bush) in the 100-yard backstroke; freshman
Lucas Santiago (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) in the 100-yard butterfly; junior
Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) in the 200-yard butterfly; senior
Alex Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta) in the 200-yard backstroke.
Wrestling
Nov. 17th at NYS Collegiate Championships, 9th place with 47.5 points
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed at the New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Cornell University. The Red Dragons came away with a ninth place finish in the “A” tournament, scoring 47.5 points. Oneonta was third amongst non-Division I schools that competed. Cornell ended up winning the overall title with 183.5 points with Columbia second with 152.5 points.
The Red Dragons had five of its 10 competitors earn All-State, which is awarded to those wrestlers who finish in the top-8 in their respective weight class.
Those wrestlers who earned All-State honors include sophomore
Alex Pugh (Morrisville/Peru) (8th, 125); junior
Ben Mikac (Williamsville/Williamsville East) (7th, 133); junior
Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) (6th, 157); freshman
Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) (8th, 165); junior
Chad Obzud (8th, 184).
Graff put together a 4-1 tournament before medically forfeiting his final two matches to finish sixth. Graff recorded one pin, which came in his opening match in the consolation bracket against RJ Paquette of Hunter.
Obzud won four matches as well while recording three successive pins to advance in the consolation bracket at 184 lbs. His final pin came against a wrestler of Division I Hofstra.
Mikac and Gillen each won three matches on the day. Gillen recorded one pin during the tournament.
In the “B” tournament, Oneonta had 10 wrestlers compete. There were no team scores kept and the Red Dragons didn't have any wrestlers finish in the top-4 in their respective weight classes.
Freshman
Jared Usher (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) led the “B” group with three wins including one pin at 174 lbs. Junior
Brian Barry (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) (133) and freshmen
Joseph Gates (Bohemia/Connetquot) (141),
Curt Rowley (Duanesburg/Duanesburg) (141) and
Anthony Marino (Nesconset/Sachem North) (174) all recorded a pair of wins on the day. Gates' wins came via pin fall including one against Aaron Harrigan of Division I ARMY while one of Rowley's wins can by pin.
