Men’s Soccer (6-3-1/3-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 28th at Brockport, W 3-0
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team scored three goals in the final 12 minutes last Friday to take a shutout win at Brockport in SUNYAC men's action. Three different players scored for the Red Dragons.
Although dominating the game with nothing to show for it, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team finally broke through in the 79th minute en route to the shutout victory. Sophomore
Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) led Oneonta with a goal and an assist in the match. He assisted on the second goal for the Red Dragons in the 88th minute and then scored the final goal of the contest in the 89th minute.
The day's first goal for Oneonta came from senior
Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac), who scored his first of the year in his third game back from injury that kept him out of the first six games of the season. His goal came off a corner kick when he collected a rebounding ball before putting a shot in the goal.
Freshman
Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead with less than three minutes left in regulation. Winiarski took a pass from Rivera and then blasted a shot from the top of the box that beat Brockport keeper.
Sophomore goalkeeper,
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse), made four saves in goal for Oneonta as he picked up his second win of the season along with recording his second shutout of the season.
Sept. 29th at Geneseo, W 4-1
After conceding a goal in the second minute of the match last Saturday, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team took control for the final 88 minutes en route to a 4-1 victory at SUNY Geneseo.
"We are starting to look and play like a team," said coach
Iain Byrne via text. "We are controlling games and scoring goals. We still have a ways to go to get to last year's level, but this was an encouraging weekend to build off."
Geneseo scored just 1:04 into the match.
Six minutes later, Oneonta got the equalizer from junior
Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy) unassisted.
Oneonta took the lead for good in the 26th minute when freshman
Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) volleyed a ball from 25 yards out that beat the Geneseo keeper.
Senior
Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) added a third goal before halftime when he finished off a great move after receiving a pass from freshman
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's).
Volpe capped the scoring for the Red Dragons with an unassisted goal in the 79th minute on a great individual move that saw him dribble past two defenders and the goalie before putting the ball in the back of the goal.
Oneonta finished ahead in shots, 16-5, while holding a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Women’s Soccer (7-3-1/3-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 28th vs. Brockport, W 3-1
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team fell behind 1-0 in the 56th minute last Friday, but came storming back with three unanswered goals to hand visiting Brockport its first loss of the season. The Red Dragons controlled the tempo after falling behind en route to picking up its second SUNYAC victory of the season.
“We have been working on our passing and transitioning with speed,” said head coach
Liz McGrail. “It was great to see us put it together and get a good win. It was a great team effort today.”
Leading the attack for Oneonta was junior
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) who notched a pair of goals including the insurance goal in the 83rd minute. The goals for Guglielmo give her three for the season.
After the two teams played to a scoreless opening half, it was Brockport that got on the board in the 56th minute off a corner kick.
Oneonta wasted no time in tying the score as they came right back less than two minutes later on Guglielmo's first score. She got her foot on a ball in the box and blasted a shot by Brockport keeper.
The Red Dragons kept up the attack and got the go-ahead goal 15 minutes later. Junior
Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) made a hustling play along the left flank and sent a perfect crossing pass that made it to the front of the goal. Classmate
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) was in the right place as she used her leg to redirect the pass into the right corner of the goal to give Oneonta a 2-1 advantage.
Guglielmo's insurance goal came when she beat a defender and got a shot off from in close that beat Thompson to her right as the ball got inside the left post.
Sept. 29th vs. Geneseo, W 1-0 (OT)
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team had to work overtime, but in the end, the came out on top of visiting SUNY Geneseo 1-0 in SUNYAC action at home last Saturday. The hero was junior
Guglielmo who was standing in the right place to collect a rebound of the Geneseo keeper before sending a ball that hit underneath the cross bar that deflected down over the goal line to end the match in the 94th minute.
The play started with a crossing pass from the right flank by senior
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches). When the ball got to the keeper, it deflected off her chest and bounced right out in front where Guglielmo was waiting all alone before chipping the ball over the keeper towards the goal.
Oneonta completed dominated Geneseo, who remains winless on the season. The Red Dragons finished the contest with 16 shots while its stingy defense allowed only three shots. Oneonta also had five corner kicks to none for the Blue Knights.
Freshman keeper
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) only had to make one save today for Oneonta as she ran her record to 4-1 overall while lowering her goals against to 0.58. Today's shutout was also the third of the season in five starts.
Oct. 2nd vs. Hartwick, W 2-1
All the scoring in last Tuesday’s game came in the first half with host SUNY Oneonta coming out on the winning side of a 2-1 score versus city rival Hartwick College.
Oneonta scored first in the 16th minute of play on one of its four corner kicks in the opening half. Junior
Guglielmo took the kick for Oneonta and sent the ball into the box where it rolled loose. Freshman
Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) collected the ball and took a shot that deflected off the leg of junior
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and into the back of the goal for the early lead.
Five minutes later Oneonta made it 2-0 on a goal by Brantmeyer. The goal was set up on a pass by Guglielmo, who put it through the defense and into the box where Brantmeyer took a shot that landed in the left corner just inside the post.
It appeared that Oneonta would run away from the Hawks, but they kept battling. Their goal came on a rebound after a penalty kick. The initial kick for Hartwick was denied by Oneonta keeper
Murphy, but the rebound came out and a Hawk was able to put a shot to the back of the goal.
Murphy, who improved to 5-1 on the season, made three saves in the match. The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 20-7 in the contest.
Women’s Tennis (6-3/1-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 3rd vs. Hartwick, W 7-2
The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team will be streaking heading into this weekend's SUNYAC tournament at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Red Dragons won its fourth straight match last Wednesday versus Hartwick, 7-2.
The SUNYAC tournament begins on Friday with four quarterfinal matches. Oneonta, who finished in third place in the East Division, will take on Brockport, who is the No. 2 seed from the West. That match will begin 1:00pm. The winner will advance into the semifinals on Saturday versus the winner of the New Paltz/Oswego match. The championship is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm. The SUNYAC champion will receive the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament in the spring.
In Wednesday's match with Hartwick, Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. The Red Dragons surrendered only eight games in doubles, which included an 8-2 win at first doubles by senior
Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie) and junior
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) over Nicole Schepisi and Lysandra Tetreault.
Oneonta had to shift its singles lineup due to a couple of injuries sustained during doubles play, but still managed to win four of the six matches. Skolnick won at second singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Lauren Michels. Other winners for Oneonta were juniors
Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) and
Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) at third and fourth singles respectively. Classmate
Abigail Smith (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won a super tiebreak third set to defeat Kristen Napolitano, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
