Field Hockey (12-6/3-3 SUNYAC)
Oct. 26th vs. Union, W 4-1
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team totally controlled last Friday's home game versus Union College en route to a 4-1 victory. Oneonta out shot the Dutchwomen, 21-6, while holding a decided advantage in penalty corners 15-3.
The Red Dragons got on the scoreboard first as junior
Samantha Smith (Webster/Webster Thomas) scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute of the match. Smith was able to collect a rebound in front of the goal before slipping it by the Union goalie.
Union came back and tied the score on an unassisted goal on a reverse stick shot that beat Oneonta goalie
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool). Tracy played 60 minutes today and recorded her 10 win of the season.
Four minutes later, senior
Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) took a pass and moved enough to turn herself to get a shot off that went to the back of the goal. The goal came in the 21st minute and gave the Red Dragons the lead for good.
In the second half, junior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) scored a pair of goals, which were both assisted by Johnson. The goals came off corners where the two worked a couple of passes before Morgan finished them off. The first goal was a redirect of a pass by Johnson while the second goal was a direct shot off the pass.
Oct. 27th vs. RPI, W 5-2
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team had another dominating performance last Saturday, as they defeated visiting Rensselaer 5-2 on Senior Day. Oneonta will now prepare for the SUNYAC tournament at New Paltz this weekend. The Red Dragons will play host New Paltz Friday morning at 11am in the semifinals. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1pm.
Oneonta scored three goals in the opening half of play while holding the Engineers to no shots. Senior
Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) scored her 13th goal of the year in the 12th minute to get things going for Oneonta. Her goal was assisted by junior
Morgan, who took a shot that got by the goalie before Wright redirected it to the back of the net.
A couple of minutes later, sophomore
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) collected a rebound and lifted a shot that went into the upper left corner of the goal. It was Day's 10th goal of the season.
Morgan capped the scoring in the first half unassisted, as she notched her first of two goals in the game. Morgan also scored Oneonta's fourth goal in the 57th minute, assisted by senior
Johnson.
Johnson scored her own goal in the 64th minute with an assist from Day. Day pushed a pass across the circle that Johnson was able to get her stick on and redirect into the back of the goal.
Volleyball (21-12/3-5 SUNYAC)
Oct. 27th vs. Sage College, W 3-0 (Dig Pink Invitational)
Oct. 27th vs. CCNY, W 3-0 (Dig Pink Invitational)
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team swept through Sage College and CCNY last Saturday at the third annual Dig Pink Invitational to help in the fight against cancer. All monies raised from the event will go directly towards cancer research and education.
In the opening match of the day versus Sage, Oneonta won 25-11, 25-18, 25-13. Seniors
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) along with freshman
Hannah O'Neil (Brookhaven/Bellport) all recorded six kills to lead the attack. Calvello also had a team high 18 assists to go with four blocks while Boburka had a team high five aces to go with three blocks. Junior
Bridget McHugh (New Hyde Park/Herricks) recorded a team high six blocks.
Against CCNY, the entire squad of 18 players saw action in the sweep. Boburka recorded 11 kills in the match. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Vishneowski (Glenmont/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had 14 assists and two aces.
Oneonta will now prepare for its SUNYAC tournament play-in match this Friday, Nov. 2 at Buffalo State versus SUNY Potsdam scheduled for noon. The two teams finished tied for third place in the East Division and must play each other to see who will get into the SUNYAC tournament hosted by Buffalo State. The winner will advance to play Fredonia at 6pm.
Men’s Cross Country
Oct. 27th at the SUNYAC Championships in Fredonia, 3rd place with 111 points
The men’s cross country team competed last Saturday at the SUNYAC Championships meet hosted by Fredonia at Lake Erie State Park and came away with a third place finish. The men scored 111 points.
Last Saturday’s third place finish for the men equaled its best finish ever at the championships. In 2007, the men were third overall. The SUNY Geneseo men won the race while SUNY Cortland was second.
Senior
John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) led the men with an 11th place finish overall. His finish earned him All-Conference Second Team honors.

Michael Delligatti (Fresh Meadows/Francis Lewis) in 35th.
Women’s Cross Country
Oct. 27th at the SUNYAC Championships in Fredonia, 3rd place with 85 points
The women’s cross country competed last Saturday at the SUNYAC Championship meet hosted by Fredonia at Lake Erie State Park and came away with a third place finish. The women score 85 points.
For the women, it was the best finish at the conference championship all time. The last two years they were fourth overall. They finished one point behind second place Plattsburgh. SUNY Geneseo was the overall winner with 45 points.
Leading Oneonta today on the women's side was junior
Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus), who was the third place runner overall. This was her second consecutive top-5 finish at the championships, as last year she came in fifth place. Her finish last year earned her induction into the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Hall of Fame. This year's finish earns Kennedy First Team All-SUNYAC honors for a second straight year.
Rounding out the top-7 runners for Oneonta today was junior
Allison Ryley (LaGrangeville/Arlington), sophomores
Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers/School of the Holy Child),
Caitlyn Kuzmich (Greenwich/Greenwich),
Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) and
Mariel Doyle (Delmar/Bethlehem) along with freshman
Ceili McMorrow (Pearl River/Pearl River). McLoughlin was just outside the top-15 in 17th place while Kuzmich was close in 19th place. Genovesi finished 22nd, Ryley was 24th, McMorrow was 34th and Doyle was 39th.
