Men’s Soccer (11-5-1/7-2 SUNYAC)

Oct. 19th vs. Fredonia, W 7-0
One win down and one to go for the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team as they kept themselves alive for the top seed in the SUNYAC tournament, which begins next Saturday.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the floodgates opened and Oneonta poured it on to the tune of six goals for the final of 7-0.  The offensive output was the Red Dragons' largest since Sep. 1, 2009 when they put 10 up versus SUNY Cobleskill.

Junior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy) and freshman Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) each registered a pair of goals for Oneonta last Friday.  Halberg scored his team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season while Saljanin scored his first two collegiate goals.

Sophomore Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) and freshman Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) each had one goal and one assist, as did senior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington).

Oneonta completely dominated with a 24-4 shot advantage and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Fredonia had two shots in each half.  The two first half shots came in the first seven minutes of the match and actually were in close.  Starter Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) saved one shot and the other flew over the goal.

Oct. 20th vs. Buffalo State, W 5-0
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team completely dominated visiting Buffalo State last Saturday in SUNYAC action 5-0.  The victory secured a bye in the conference tournament, as the Red Dragons earned the No. 2 seed after Plattsburgh defeated Brockport 2-1 in overtime.  Despite having the same 7-2 conference record, Plattsburgh earned the top seed because of its win over the Red Dragons earlier in the season.

Oneonta took control from the opening whistle even though it took them until the 29th minute to put its first goal on the scoreboard.  Junior Jason Ruivo (Sleepy Hollow/Sleepy Hollow) scored his first goal of the season unassisted after he dribbled around a defender before sliding a shot underneath the Bengals keeper.

Six minutes later, freshman Volpe notched his fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior Halberg. Halberg made a crossing pass to Volpe, who was at the top of the box.  Volpe settled the ball and then fired a shot to the upper right hand corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons would add a third goal in the final minute of the first half when sophomore Cain scored on a corner kick.  Cain was in the right spot to collect a rebound of a save by the keeper on the original ball sent in from the corner by classmate Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore).

Freshmen Ryan Young (Stormville/John Jay) and Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored their first collegiate goals in the second half for the final margin of victory.  Seniors Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) and Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) assisted on Young's goal while Tenzer put a ball through to Sutherland who slipped a low shot past the Buffalo keeper.

Women’s Soccer (11-6-1/7-2 SUNYAC)

Oct. 19th at Fredonia, L 0-1
Oct. 20th at Buffalo State, W 3-1
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team defeated Buffalo State last Saturday 3-1 on the road in the final SUNYAC regular season match of 2012.  With the victory, Oneonta secured the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the conference tournament, which begins next Saturday.

Last Friday, Oneonta fell to Fredonia 1-0, which set up the must win to secure a first round bye.

The first half of the day's contest didn't have much going on until the final seven minutes when the two teams combined for three goals.  Oneonta held a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Senior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) got things started with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute.  It was her fifth goal of the season.  Brantmeyer would tally another unassisted goal in the 71st minute to add insurance to the Red Dragons lead.

The Bengals tied knotted the score at 1’s just four minutes later on a direct kick from about 30 yards out.

As the first half was coming to a close, junior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent a through ball into the box to sophomore Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who finished the pass off with a shot to the lower corner of the goal.  The goal came with 13 seconds remaining in the first half and gave Oneonta its lead going into the break.

Field Hockey (10-6/3-3 SUNYAC)

Oct. 19th vs. New Paltz, L 3-4
In a must win for both teams in a tight race for the four SUNYAC tournament berths, it was SUNY New Paltz that came out on top, 4-3, versus SUNY Oneonta last Friday.

For Oneonta they will need Brockport to lose to Oswego tomorrow for them to earn the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament that will be held Nov. 2-3 at the highest seed.  Brockport lost at SUNY Cortland today, 4-0.

The game was well played and entertaining as both squads moved the ball from end-to-end creating multiple scoring chances throughout the 70 minutes.  In the end, Oneonta generated 23 shots and 11 corners to New Paltz's 17 shots and four corners.

New Paltz's opening goal actually came on a corner on a tipped shot that sailed past Oneonta goalie Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool).  Tracy finished the game with seven saves.

In the eighth minute, a Hawk player was able to redirect a pass for the games opening goal.

Senior Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) tied the game at one apiece in the 22nd minute.  The ball was in tight to the New Paltz goalie, but junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) was able to slip a pass to Wright, who one-timed it by the goalie.

The two teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

Oneonta struck first in the second half, as Morgan got loose and dribbled into the circle before taking a shot that trickled by the goalkeeper to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute.

The Hawks didn't waste much time in tying the game.  In the 43rd minute, New Paltz had a flurry of shots before they were able to slip one past Tracy.

New Paltz took the lead for good five minutes later on a blast that just snuck inside the right post. The Hawks added an insurance goal in the 65th minute.

With just under two minutes remaining, Oneonta made the game interesting when Morgan scored her second of the game to cut the Hawks lead back to a goal.  Morgan was able to dribble into the circle before rifling a shot to the back of the goal.

New Paltz was able to control the ball enough during the final 1:57 to secure the win.

Oct. 24th vs. Utica College, W 3-1
Two late first half goals lifted the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team last Wednesday in a 3-1 victory over Utica College at home.  The win for the Red Dragons was its 10th of the season, which is the third consecutive season that Oneonta has recorded at least 10 wins in a season.

Utica had three shots in the game and they all came in the first half including the game's first goal in the fifth minute of play.  Tracey only had to make a pair of saves in picking up her ninth win of the season.

It appeared that Utica would take its one-goal lead into halftime, as time was running out in the opening half of play.  The Red Dragons came up with a pair of goals including one with nine seconds left in the first half.

Sophomore Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) got the equalizer with less than two minutes to go when she collected a ball that deflected off a Utica defender's stick.  She was able to get a shot by the Pioneers' goalie inside the far post.

The go ahead goal was scored by senior Wright, who notched her team leading 12th goal of the season.  Wright was in the right place when the ball came off the goalie's pad where she was able to get her stick on it to bang a shot to the back of the goal.

Oneonta dominated the second half and scored an insurance goal in the 65th minute.  Senior, two-year captain, Bridgette Robinson (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from classmate Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs), who registered her team leading ninth assist of the season.  Johnson made a nice touch pass to Robinson inside the circle.  Robinson finished the play with a shot that whistled by the goalie.
