Men’s Soccer (9-5-1/5-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 13th at New Paltz, W 1-0
Junior
Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) scored in the 22nd minute of the game and the SUNY Oneonta defense made it stand in a 1-0 shutout of New Paltz last Saturday on the road.
Tenzer's goal was unassisted and came on a shot from about 16 yards out. It was his second goal of the season and his second game-winner. The shot beat the New Paltz goalkeeper to the left corner of the net.
Oneonta's
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) made one save to pick up his third shutout victory of the season.
Oneonta outshot the Hawks, 12-5, on the afternoon, including a 3-1 deficit in shots on goal. The Red Dragons also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Oct. 14th vs. Western New England, L 1-2
Two first half goals were all the visiting WNEC Golden Bears needed in securing a 2-1 road victory over host SUNY Oneonta in non-conference action last Sunday at Red Dragon Soccer Field.
Oneonta had its share of chances early, but the WNEC goalkeeper came up with a couple of diving stops to keep the game scoreless.
The Golden Bears didn't have many opportunities early, but asserted itself midway through the first half that led to its two goals in the 28th and 32nd minutes.
WNEC's first goal came out of a scramble in front of the goal. The ball was sent into the box from the left flank where it settled in front of the goal. The ball was still loose in front and a couple of Golden Bears had a shot at the ball before it squeezed by keeper
Benji Parkes (Lansing/Lansing) for the 1-0 lead.
Parkes was playing in his first collegiate game and finished the game with one save.
The second goal for the Golden Bears came on a long throw-in that landed in the center of the box. The ball was settled and fired to the upper right corner of the goal to give WNEC a 2-0 lead.
Senior
Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored Oneonta's lone goal with four seconds left in the contest. Fortier got his head on a terrific crossing pass by freshman
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's). The ball deflected off the inside of the left post before heading to the back of the goal.
Shots were relatively even with Oneonta holding a slim 14-10 advantage overall, but a 7-3 advantage in shots that landed on goal.
Women’s Soccer (10-5-1/6-1 SUNYAC)
Oct. 13th vs. New Paltz, W 3-0
After a scoreless opening half of play, host SUNY Oneonta put three unanswered goals on the scoreboard en route to a shutout victory in a key women's soccer match versus New Paltz last Saturday. The two squads entered the contest separated by two points at the top of the SUNYAC standings.
The Red Dragons didn't waste any time in putting its first goal on the scoreboard in the second half, as freshman
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute. The play started in the center of the field with a pass from junior
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) to the left flank to classmate
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa). Greco controlled the pass and then sent a cross into the box to a wide open Ceschini, who took a dribble to her right and fired a shot along the ground that went through the hands of New Paltz goalkeeper.
Oneonta continued to control play and took advantage of two New Paltz miscues on defense. The first came in the 73rd minute with sophomore
Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) benefitting from the error. On a ball that was sent high into the box, a New Paltz defender allowed the ball to deflect off her body away from her where Moinzadeh was waiting. Moinzadeh controlled the ball, turned and shot a ball that landed just inside the left post for her first goal of the season.
DeSimone scored the final goal for Oneonta in the waning minutes after she collected a ball that came from the New Paltz defense on an attempted clear. DeSimone took the ball and dribbled to her right inside the box before rifling a shot that found the top right corner of the goal.
Freshman
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) started and finished her first game since Sep. 9 and made four saves in picking up her third win and third shutout of the season.
Field Hockey (9-5/3-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 13th at Ithaca, W 5-1
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team recorded a 5-1 win on the road over Ithaca last Saturday in non-conference action. Oneonta got a pair of goals from junior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) to lead the attack, as the Red Dragons snapped a three-game skid.
Oneonta got on the scoreboard early when senior
Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) scored in the sixth minute. Her goal was assisted by classmate
Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central).
Twenty minutes later, sophomore
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) gave the Red Dragons a two-goal lead when she netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season unassisted.
Ithaca's only goal came less than a minute later.
Morgan scored her first goal of the game prior to halftime to give Oneonta a 3-1 advantage going into the break.
Morgan scored her second of the game in the 44th minute with an assist from Johnson. The Red Dragons' final goal came in the 53rd minute by sophomore
Chelsea Remling (Mahopac/Lakeland) with an assist from Day.
All three goalies played for Oneonta with starter
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) picking up her eighth win of the season. Tracy made four of the five saves for Oneonta today.
Oneonta led the Bombers in shots 19-13 and led 17-11 in penalty corners.
Oct. 16th at Hartwick, W 4-0
Senior Wright scored the first three goals for SUNY Oneonta tonight, as the Red Dragons disposed of city rival Hartwick College 4-0 in non-conference action at Hartwick. The three goals for Wright bring her team leading total to 10 this fall.
Wright scored her first goal in the 26th minute with an assist from classmate
Johnson. The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 9-2 in the opening half of play while taking its one-goal advantage into halftime.
Wright completed the natural hat-trick with two straight goals early in the second half. Both goals were unassisted and came in the 41st and 47th minutes.
Wright assisted on the final goal of the game by sophomore
Day with less than three minutes to go in the game.
Volleyball (16-10/1-3 SUNYAC)
Oct. 12th & 13th at St. Joseph’s College Invitational
vs. CCNY, W 3-0; vs. Ramapo, W 3-0; vs. York, W 3-0; vs. WPI, L 1-3
The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team traveled to Long Island this past weekend to participate in the St. Joseph's College Invitational and came home with three wins.
Last Friday, the Red Dragons took care of both CCNY and Ramapo in three sets. CCNY was actually late for the match with Oneonta and had to forfeit the first set.
Senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) had 15 kills versus Ramapo to lead the team. Classmate
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) had 24 assists and 10 digs to lead the team. Junior
Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) had five aces and eight digs.
Last Saturday, Oneonta swept York College of New York in three sets before falling to WPI in four sets. Everyone played in the York match, which was the first time all season that Coach Cashman was able to get all 18 players in the match.
Against WPI, Boburka led the Red Dragons with 16 kills. Calvello had nine kills, 12 assists and 10 digs while Pelaccio had 16 digs to lead the defense along with three aces.
Oct. 16th at Ithaca, L 1-3
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team traveled to Ithaca College last Tuesday and fell 3 sets to 1.
The Red Dragons were competitive in every set as each set was lost by a 2 points with the exception of the set they won 25-16.
Boburka, Calvello and Pelaccio led in kills, assists and digs respectively. Boburka recorded 14 kills and had 3 aces. Calvello had 33 assists and 12 digs in the four sets and Pelaccio led the team with 19 digs.
Men’s Cross Country
Oct. 13th at Connecticut College Invitational, 4th with 152 points
The SUNY Oneonta men’s cross country team competed at the Connecticut College Invitational last Saturday and finished fourth overall with 152 points.
Senior
John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) ran a personal best time for the 8K distance of 25:30 to lead the men. Longo was the eighth individual to cross the finish line in the race.
Following Longo was freshman
Jim Bernstein (Grahamsville/Tri-Valley) in 29th place overall in a time of 26:15, which was a collegiate best time for him.
Rounding out the top five for Oneonta was senior
Chris Harvey (Kings Park/Kings Park) in 34th place, junior
Mitchell Todorov (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in 38th place and senior
Ben Reynolds (Endicott/Maine-Endwell) in 43rd place. Both Harvey (26:23) and Todorov (26:24) ran personal best times in the race.
Women’s Cross Country
Oct. 13th at Connecticut College Invitational, 4th with 157 points
The SUNY Oneonta women’s cross country team competed at the Connecticut College Invitational last Saturday and finished fourth overall with 157 points.
Leading the women this week was sophomore
Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers/School of the Holy Child), who was 18th overall with a time of 22:40, which was a personal best for the 6K distance.
Just a couple seconds behind McLoughlin was junior
Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) in 21st place, running a personal best time of 22:42.
The next three runners were a pair of sophomores and a freshman. Sophomore
Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) ran a personal best time of 23:07 in placing 31st. Freshman
Ceili McMorrow (Pearl River/Pearl River) ran a collegiate best 23:13 in placing 36th. Sophomore
Caitlyn Kuzmich (Greenwich/Greenwich) rounded out the top five for Oneonta in 51st place in a time of 23:46.
