In windy conditions, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team shut out SUNY Potsdam 1-0. A first half goal by freshman
Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) proved to be the difference last Friday as Oneonta won its third straight game. The Red Dragons have also won seven of its last eight contests.
Williams' goal came in the 38th minute with an assist from senior
Jeff Christian (Middletown/Minisink Valley). Williams was there to collect a rebound of a shot by Christian. It was Williams' second goal of the season.
Oneonta held a huge advantage in shots in today's match 17-7.
Freshman keeper
Colan Balkwell (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) made five saves in goal for Oneonta, as he remained perfect in his rookie season at 5-0 while picking up his second shutout.
Oct. 6th at Plattsburgh, L 2-3 (2OT)
Another classic match in the North Country last Saturday for the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team ended in the second overtime on the short end of a 3-2 loss at the hands of Plattsburgh.
Oneonta was behind on two separate occasions, 1-0 and 2-1 before coming back each time to tie the score. Plattsburgh got an early goal to take a 1-0 lead just 5:34 into the match before senior
Chrsitian scored the first of his two goals seven minutes later to knot the game at one goal apiece.
Plattsburgh’s first goal in the 25th minute to put them ahead 2-1.
Oneonta dialed up the attack in the second half, as they were relentless in the Plattsburgh end of the field. The Red Dragons finally got the equalizer in the 67th minute when Christian scored off an assist from classmate
Dan Josepher (Manorville/Eastport/South Manor).
The two teams went through the first overtime still deadlocked until the goal early in the second overtime.
Freshman Balkwell started in goal for Oneonta allowing both first half goals. He was replaced at halftime by sophomore
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse), who made four saves before the game-ending goal.
Oct. 10 at Skidmore, W 1-0 (OT)
SUNY Oneonta freshman
Williams scored a minute into the first overtime for a 1-0 non-league men's soccer win over Skidmore College, last Wednesday at Wachenheim Field.
Dan Scott (Hyde Park/FD Roosevelt) started the winning play with a 30-yard pass from his own defensive end that found a charging
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) on the right side. Volpe played a cross in the box to Williams who tallied his third of the season at 91:01. All of Williams' goals this season have been game-winners.
The game started slowly with neither team mounting a serious challenge in the first half.
Oneonta carried the play for a majority of the second half. The Red Dragons had a decent opportunity in the 64th minute when
Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) fired a shot from just inside the box that forced Thoroughbred goalkeeper to use a quick kick save to prevent the goal.
Skidmore's first opportunity in the second half came on restart from along the end line in the 71st minute that just missed wide. The Thoroughbreds had a chance late in regulation when a hard shot was knocked down by Oneonta keeper Balkwell.
Oneonta had a 19-6 shot advantage, however only six were on goal. The Red Dragons also had six corners to Skidmore's zero.
DeBottis had stopped both shots he faced in the first half, while Balkwell had one save in the second half.
Women’s Soccer (9-4-1/5-1 SUNYAC)
Oct. 5th vs. Potsdam, W 4-0
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team flexed its muscle last Friday afternoon in a 4-0 shutout victory against visiting SUNY Potsdam in SUNYAC action.
Junior
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and junior
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) led the attack for Oneonta, which amassed 32 shots in the contest. DeSimone scored a pair of goals, both assisted by Brantmeyer, in leading the Red Dragons to the shutout. DeSimone's first goal came in the second minute of play when she headed a throw in from Brantmeyer that found its way to the back of the goal. The goal was the only one of the first half.
Junior
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) gave Oneonta a two-goal lead in the 54th minute when she registered an unassisted goal. Greco had the ball just outside the box off to the left and measured a shot that flew over the Potsdam goalkeeper into the net.
Three minutes later DeSimone made the score 3-0 when she redirected a cross from Brantmeyer, who was on the right flank.
The final tally for Oneonta came from freshman
Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck), who scored her first collegiate goal in the final minute of regulation. The assist came from classmate
Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy), who crossed a ball in from the left flank that Lasota volleyed with her left foot over the goalie.
All three Oneonta goalkeepers shared in the shutout for the Red Dragons. Starter
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) made two saves in the first half and picked up her sixth win of the season.
Oct. 6th vs. Plattsburgh, W 3-0
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team put forth another dominating outing last Saturday en route to a 3-0 shutout of visiting Plattsburgh in SUNYAC action.
The star of the day's game was junior
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers), who has been on a goal-scoring tear over the last two weeks. She scored Oneonta's first two goals to bring her team-leading total to six on the season.
Guglielmo's first goal came in the seventh minute after she volleyed a crossing pass from the left flank by senior
Lindsey Doxtader (Oneonta/Oneonta) into the far left corner of the goal for an early 1-0 lead for the Red Dragons. Her second goal came three minutes later when she beat the Plattsburgh keeper to the ball and dodged around her before putting the ball into the goal.
The final goal for Oneonta came in the 67th minute by freshman
Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial), who scored her first collegiate goal. Berry headed a ball by the keeper that was sent from the right flank by sophomore
Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).
The freshmen duo of
Murphy and
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) combined for three saves while sharing in the shutout. Murphy picked up the win and raised her record to 7-1.
Oct. 10th at Hamilton, L 1-3
The SUNY Oneonta women’s soccer team went on the road to Hamilton last Wednesday and dropped a 3-1 decision to the Continentals in miserable conditions as the wind and rain started when the game did.
All three of Hamilton’s goals were registered in the first half in a twenty-minute period starting at the 18
th minute. The Red Dragons got forward on the attack, going against the wind, but could not put anything away in the half. Oneonta’s best opportunity came from Guglielmo as she took a shot that forced the Continental keeper to make a diving save.
The second half was dominated by the Red Dragons who found the back of the net in the 88
th minute. Freshman
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) intercepted a goal kick as Hamilton’s goalkeeper slipped and was able to put the ball in the back of the goal before she could recover. The goal was Ceschini’s first collegiate goal.
The Red Dragons took 20 shots to Hamilton’s 16 and each team had 3 corner kicks.
Field Hockey (7-5/3-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 5th at Brockport, L 0-1 (OTS – 3-4)
Oct. 6th at Geneseo, L 0-1 (OT)
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team came back from its weekend in the Rochester area with nothing to show for its efforts. The Red Dragons lost a pair of SUNYAC contests at Brockport and Geneseo, which knocked them out of first place. Oneonta had entered the weekend at the top of the SUNYAC with its 3-0 record along with riding a four-game winning streak.
In last Friday's game against Brockport, Oneonta lost in a shootout after battling the Golden Eagles to a scoreless tie through regulation and two, sudden-victory overtime periods. Brockport came out on top 4-3 in the second set of five shooters. Despite controlling the attack for the entire game, Oneonta couldn't slide one past the Brockport goalie, who made 12 saves. Oneonta had a 17-7 shot advantage and a 17-6 advantage in penalty corners.
In last Saturday's loss to SUNY Geneseo, the Red Dragons out shot the Blue Knights 13-8 and had an 11-5 corner advantage. The game ended three minutes into the first overtime when the Blue Knights converted a penalty stroke.
Oct. 10th vs. Scranton, L 2-3
For the first 64 minutes of last Wednesday's non-conference field hockey contest between SUNY Oneonta and Scranton, it was all Oneonta. But in the final six minutes, it was all Scranton, as they erased a two-goal deficit with three unanswered goals to steal a 3-2 win.
Oneonta finished the game with 25 shots to 10 for the Royals and were in complete control. Junior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) took the opening draw for Oneonta and went right to the goal and put a reverse stick shot by the Scranton goalie for a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.
Oneonta took its one-goal lead into halftime and added a second goal in the 42nd minute. Senior
Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) dribbled right into the circle and lifted one past the goalie. It was Johnson's sixth goal of the season.
With time winding down, the Royals scored to cut Oneonta's lead in half.
Less than 90 seconds later, Scranton got the equalizer for the Royals.
Just when the game appeared to be headed for overtime, a Royal player took the ball down the left side and into the circle where she made a perfect crossing pass. Waiting on the other side was a teammate, who stuck the ball just inside the right post for the game-winner with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

Volleyball (13-8/1-3 SUNYAC)
Oct. 5th & 6th at Union Interleague Challenge
vs. Union, L 1-3; vs. Keene State, L 0-3; vs. Skidmore, L 0-3; vs. Lehman, W 3-0
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team went back to Schenectady for a second time this season to compete at Union College. Three weeks ago, the squad won all four of its matches and was riding its longest winning streak in nearly a decade. This weekend was a bit different though, as Oneonta came back winning only one of its four matches at the Union Interleague Challenge. The Red Dragons lost its first three matches before winning its final match last Saturday afternoon versus Lehman College.
In their opening match against Union on last Friday afternoon, Oneonta lost in four sets (25-21, 18-25, 21-25, 22-25). Senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) had 10 kills to lead the attack while junior
Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) led the defensive effort with 17 digs.
In the second match on Friday, the Red Dragons were swept by Keene State (17-25, 21-25, 19-25). Pelaccio again led the defense with 15 digs while sophomore
Kaitlyn Vishneowski (Glenmont/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had a season high 14 assists.
Oneonta was swept by Skidmore (20-25, 12-25, 16-25) in its opening match last Saturday. Junior
Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) had a team high seven kills to go with two blocks. Pelaccio had 10 digs to lead Oneonta while freshman
Becca Horton (Owego/Owego Free Academy) had a team high 16 assists.
Against Lehman, Oneonta won in three sets (25-11, 25-12, 25-23). Junior
Bridget McHugh (New Hyde Park/Herricks) and freshman
Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) shared for high honors in kills with six each. Pelaccio had seven digs and three service aces. Senior
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) led with 10 assists.
Men’s Cross Country
Oct. 6th at RPI Invitational, 5th place with 158 points
The SUNY Oneonta cross-country team competed at the Saratoga Invitational hosted by Rensselaer last Saturday. The men finished in 5
th place out of 16 teams.
Leading the men was sophomore
Andrew Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) and freshman
Jim Bernstein (Grahamsville/Tri-Valley) in 29th and 30th respectively. Both covered the 8K course in under 26:40 with a personal best time for each. Bohunicky ran 26:36 while Bernstein ran 26:37.
Rounding out the top five for the Red Dragons were freshmen
Conor Murphy (Greenlawn/Harborfields) and
Michael Delligatti (Fresh Meadows/Francis Lewis) and sophomore
Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell). Murphy and Delligatti finished 38th and 39th respectively while Didas was in 41st. The three also finished under 27 minutes. Murphy and Delligatti crossed the line in 26:56 while Didas crossed in 26:57.
Women’s Cross Country
Oct. 6th at RPI Invitational, 5th place with 111 points
The SUNY Oneonta cross-country team competed at the Saratoga Invitational hosted by Rensselaer last Saturday. The women finished in 5
th place out of 12 teams.
On the women's side, it was junior
Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) who was the first finisher for Oneonta. She crossed the line with a time of 18:03 for just under the 5K distance of 3.04 miles.
The next finisher was sophomore
Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers/School of the Holy Child), who came in 10th place in a time of 18:11.
Freshman
Ceili McMorrow (Pearl River/Pearl River) was next for the Red Dragons in 29th place. She ran a time of 18:49.
A pair of sophomores rounded out the top five for Oneonta as
Marielle Genovesi (Glen Head/North Shore) and
Caitlyn Kuzmich (Greenwich/Greenwich) finished in 32nd and 39th respectively.
Women’s Tennis (8-4/1-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 5th-7th at SUNYAC Tournament, 3rd place
vs. Bockport, W 5-0; vs. New Paltz, L 1-5; vs. Plattsburgh, W 5-2
The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team avenged itself last Sunday in defeating Plattsburgh, 5-2, to claim third place at this year's SUNYAC championships held at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Earlier this fall, the Cardinals had defeated Oneonta 5-4 in an East Division match. Oneonta was the No. 3 seed from the East Division going into this weekend while Plattsburgh was the No. 2 seed from the East.
The Red Dragons found themselves down 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match. The lone victory came at third doubles, as the junior duo of
Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) and
Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) won 8-5.
Lankowicz also picked up a key win during singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at fifth singles. The win for Lankowicz was her team leading ninth of the year.
The top of the singles lineup came through for Oneonta with the other three points that secured the five points and the win. Senior
Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie), sophomore
Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and junior
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) won at first, second and third singles respectively. Sussman and Skolnick each won in straight sets while Browarski had to go into a third set, super tiebreak to 10 points, which she won 10-3.
Last Sunday's match completes the fall portion of the women's tennis schedule. The Red Dragons will begin the spring portion of the schedule on Saturday, Mar. 2 when they will be at William Smith.
