Weekly Sports Update - January 20, 2012

Men’s Basketball (1-13/0-7)
 
Jan. 13th at Cortland, L 58-84
Jan. 14th at Oswego, L 55-67
The SUNY Oneonta men played first place Oswego tough last Saturday, but came away with a 67-55 loss to the Lakers on the road. 

Junior Nick Sarchioto (Duanesburg/Bishop Gibbons) led Oneonta with 16 points while freshman Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) added 11 points for Oneonta, who shot 46.8% from the floor overall to Oswego's 42.6%.  The Lakers hit 10 three-point shots while outscoring Oneonta from the free throw line 15-6.

Oneonta never led in the contest and came back to tie the game twice in the opening half.  After trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, Oneonta cut the Lakers lead to five points at 46-41 with 6:30 remaining in the game.  Junior Cameron Boyden (Vestal/Vestal) made a lay up to cap the 18-7 run that got Oneonta within striking distance.  Boyden finished the game with eight points and 10 boards.  The Lakers countered with a 10-3 run to seize control back en route to the 12-point win.

Last Friday night Sarchioto scored 14 points, but Oneonta fell to rival Cortland 84-58.  Oneonta only trailed 34-28 at halftime and still within six points with 9:17 remaining in the game before the hosts put together 17-3 run that put the game out of reach.

Kelly and classmate Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) each contributed 11 points for Oneonta in the game.
 
Women’s Basketball (8-5/6-1)
 
Jan. 13th at Cortland, W 67-72
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team prevailed last Friday versus rival SUNY Cortland 67-62 in SUNYAC action.  Oneonta got 18 points from senior Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) and 14 points from Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) as they won their fourth straight game. 

Crawford hit a pair of free throws that started a game ending 12 unanswered point run that led Oneonta to the come-from behind victory.  With the score tied at 52 apiece, Cortland appeared to put the game out of reach with a 10-3 run to take a 62-55 lead with 4:49 remaining in the contest.

Oneonta hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch including another pair by Crawford.  Cortland finished the game 0-for-6 from the field at the end of the game.

After a Slagle jumper gave Oneonta a 39-29 lead early in the second half, Cortland ran off 11 straight points to take its first lead of the game at 40-39. 

Five quick points by Oneonta including a three-pointer by senior Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) gave Oneonta its lead back at 44-40.  Oneonta still held a slim two point lead for about three minutes before Cortland tied the game at 48 apiece.

Two big factors in the win for Oneonta were converting 21 Cortland turnovers into 22 points and out-scoring the host Red Dragons 16-8 at the foul line.  Oneonta made 16-of-18 free throws in the contest while Cortland made 8-of-13.
 
Jan. 14th at Oswego, L 49-55
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team lost its first SUNYAC game of the season last Saturday with a 55-49 defeat at Oswego.  Sophomore Crawford scored a season high 16 points, but the Red Dragons were outscored 18-7 from the free throw line, which proved to be a difference in the game. 

The game was close throughout with the largest lead by either team came with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game by Oswego at 40-33.  The score was tied seven times including five times in the opening half when the largest lead was five points by Oswego with 1:46 to go in the opening half at 28-23.  The Lakers took a 28-25 lead into halftime after a basket by Crawford.

Oneonta held a lead at three different times during the first half and came back to tie the score twice in the second half, but they were unable to go ahead of the Lakers in the closing 20 minutes.

Both teams struggled from behind the arc and the Lakers finished with a 42-32 rebounding advantage.  Oswego made 18-of-21 free throws while Oneonta converted on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Senior Slagle was the only other Red Dragon in double figures with 12 points.

Men’s Swimming & Diving (3-2)
 
Jan. 14th at Kumpf Invitational, 4th place with 231 points
The SUNY Oneonta men's swimming & diving team competed at the Kumpf Invitational Saturday and came away with a fourth place team finish with 231 points.  Ithaca won the meet with 676 points.

Leading the Red Dragons with a pair of second place finishes was junior Alex Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta).  Miller placed second in the 200-yard individual medley and was third in the 200-yard backstroke.  He clocked a time of 2:03.70 in the 200 IM and swam a time of 1:58.72 in the 200 back.

Sophomore Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside) also had a second place finish in the 1-meter diving event.  His score of 279.55 was good enough to reach another NCAA provisional mark.  He was also fifth in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 250.60.

Freshman Daniel Donaghy (Holtsville/Sachem East) rounded out Oneonta's group of top-5 finishers with a fifth place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle.  Donaghy covered the distance in 10:37.23.
 
Jan. 16th vs. Skidmore, W 167.5-122.5
The SUNY Oneonta men’s swimming & diving team swept through visiting Skidmore College last Monday afternoon in dual-meet action at home.  The men defeated the Thoroughbreds by a score of 167.5-122.5.
Oneonta won every pool event except for the final event, the 200-yard IM, which they swam as an exhibition event.
 
Junior Alex Vaughn (Windsor/Windsor), sophomore Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) and newcomer, Colton Roe (Middletown/Pine Bush), each won two events on the day for the Oneonta men.  Roe won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.  Vaughn won both the 100 and 200-yard-breast stroke.  Walsh won both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly, setting a pool record in the latter at 2:01.03.
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving (2-3)
 
Jan. 15th vs. Skidmore, W 177-107
The SUNY Oneonta women’s swimming & diving teams swept through visiting Skidmore College last Monday afternoon in dual-meet action at home.  The women defeated the Thoroughbreds by a score of 177-107 win.
 
The Oneonta women won all but the 50, 100 and 500-yard freestyle events, which they contested.  The Red Dragon women swam exhibition for the 200 IM as well.
 
A pair of freshmen led the Oneonta women today in their win.  Alyssa Brennan (St. James/Smithtown East) and Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy) each won two individual events for the Red Dragons.  Cahill won both the 200-yard freestyle and 200 back while Brennan took first in the 100 and 200-breast stroke events.
 
Wrestling (5-7)
 
Jan. 14th at Will Abel Invitational at Ursinus, 5th place with 60.5 points
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed at the Will Abel Invitational last Saturday hosted by Ursinus.  The Red Dragons had three individuals finish second and two finish fourth in their respective weight classes as Oneonta finished fifth overall as a team with 60-.5 points.  Host Ursinus won the Invitational with 106.5 points.

Leading Oneonta with second place finishes were sophomores Ben Mikac (Lackawanna/Williamsville East), Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown) and Vincent Barber (Clintondale/Highland). Mikac was second at 133 lbs., Smith was second at 197 lbs. and Barber was second at 285 lbs.

Oneonta's fourth place finishers were sophomores Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) at 157 lbs. and Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip) at 184 lbs.

Mikac was seeded 2nd in his bracket and received a bye in the opening round.  He then recorded back-to-back decisions to advance into the championship match.  In the final, he was defeated 6-3 by Alex Blank of Ursinus.

Smith won his opening match 9-5 over Taylor Gload of Ursinus.  In the semifinals he won an 8-7 match in a tie-breaker before falling in the championship match, 7-2, to Connor McNamara of Ursinus.

Barber recorded back-to-back pins to advance into the semifinals.  In the semis, he won via a disqualification before having to medically forfeit his championship match versus Joe Zitone of Centenary.
 
Jan. 18th at Cortland, L 12-25
The nationally seventh-ranked Cortland wrestling team won the final three weight classes to break a 12-12 tie and on went on to defeat Oneonta, 25-12, last Wednesday night at Corey Gymnasium.
 
Oneonta sophomore Mikac earned a 6-2 decision at 133 pounds to even the match at 3-3.


Cortland led 9-3 after twelve matches. Oneonta answered with a 10-4 decision by junior Matt Eberlein (Levittown/Island Trees) at 149 pounds and a 7-3 decision by sophomore Graff at 157 pounds to even the match at 9-9 halfway through the contest.


Oneonta senior Jimmy Neal (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) earned an 8-6 decision over junior Alex Meyers to make it a 12-12 match with three weight classes remaining.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Jan. 13th at Gotham Cup in New York Armory
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field teams took to the road this past Friday and competed at the historical New York Armory in New York City in the Gotham Cup.  The men had some solid performances in the non-scoring meet, which included runners from Div. I, II and III as well as Club runners. 
 
The top place-finisher for the men was freshman David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell). Bohunicky was second in the unseeded 800-meter event. He ran a 1:58.03 for his second place finish.
 
Junior John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) had the next best place individual finish on the track with a 9th place finish in the 5,000 in a time of 15:26.92.

The quartet of Bohunicky and his brother Andrew along with senior Dan Bruton (Waterford/Shenendehowa) and sophomore Tom Haskins (Tully/Tully) came in third in the 4x800 relay.  The foursome crossed the line in a time of 8:04.00.  Andrew also ran 18th in the unseeded mile with a time of 4:27.07.

In the field, freshman J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) was the top performer overall.  He was 8th in the 35-1bs. weight throw with a heave of 14.85m (48'-8.75”).  He also placed 17th in the shot put with a distance of 11.64m (38'-2.25”).
 
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
 
Jan. 13th at Gotham Cup in New York Armory
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field teams took to the road this past Friday and competed at the historical New York Armory in New York City in the Gotham Cup.  The women had some solid performances in the non-scoring meet, which included runners from Div. I, II and III as well as Club runners.  Many of the middle distance and distance runners were making their season debuts for the Red Dragons.
 
The top place-finisher for the women was senior Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill). Timmons placed second overall in the 20-lbs weight throw. Timmons fell just shy of her own school record with a distance of 16.64 meters (54’-7.25”).
 
Junior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) had three top-9 performances in her individual events.  She was tied for 4th in the high jump (1.60m, 5'-3”), 5th in the unseeded long jump (4.91m, 16'-1.50”) and 9th in the unseeded triple jump (10.44m, 34'-3”).

Senior Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill/Beacon) made her season debut on Friday and competed in the seeded mile event and the 4x800-meter relay.  She crossed the line in 5:19.11 to finish 8th in the mile.  She teamed with freshmen Mariel Doyle (Delmar/Bethlehem) and Jaclyn Masucci (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) and junior Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville/Arlington) to run a time of 10:10.85 in the 3,200-meter relay.

Also making their season debuts for the women were sophomore Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and junior Pam Ernst (Miller Place/Miller Place). Both women competed in the 5,000-meter run and finished 4th and 6th respectively in times of 18:33.75 for Kennedy and 18:35.21 for Ernst.
