Men’s Soccer (4-2-2/1-0-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 23rd at Oswego, W 1-0
An own goal early in the second half was the difference in a 1-0 win for the Oneonta men's soccer team on Oswego State's Laker Soccer Field last Friday in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.
The Laker keeper made a diving save to his left off an
Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) shot, but his teammates made a mistake while trying to clear the ball and sent the ball into the corner of the net for the only goal of the game.
The first half was evenly played with each team taking six shots as the No. 8 (Oswego State) and No. 10 (Oneonta State) ranked teams in the NSCAA Division III East regional rankings did battle.
The Red Dragons were coming off a 1-1 tie to previously No. 1 ranked team in the NSCAA Div. III national poll (Christopher Newport) and used that momentum to gain control in the second half.
Oneonta applied more pressure and outshot the Lakers, 7-3, in the second half after getting the goal less than three minutes into the period.
Freshman
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) made two saves to pick up his first win of his career in goal for the Red Dragons.
Sept. 24th at Cortland, T 1-1 (2OT)
Oneonta senior
Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute as the Red Dragons played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Cortland last Saturday afternoon in a SUNYAC matchup.
Cortland scored the games first goal in the 34
th minute of play when the ball fell to the feet of a Cortland player after the initial shot was blocked.
Senior
Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) assisted on Laronde's goal, and senior goalie
Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) made three saves for Oneonta.
Oneonta had two excellent chances to tie the game late in the first half, but Cortland’s defender cleared Oneonta junior
Eric Fortier's
(Pleasant Valley/Arlington) shot off the goal line with six minutes, four seconds remaining and the keeper made a diving save at the right post off a header by Oneonta freshman
Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) 12 seconds later.
Oneonta drew even when Kowalski fed a pass to Laronde down the left side. Laronde dribbled past a Cortland defender and beat the keeper one-on-one with a shot inside the right post. Oneonta had the two best chances to end the game in regulation. Cortland’s keeper made a sliding save at the right post on Kowalski in the 69th minute, then denied Shkreli's one-time bid from six yards in the 86th minute.
Neither team generated a quality chance in the first overtime, with each team putting a long shot on goal. In the closing seconds of the second overtime, Oneonta nearly earned the win, but Shkreli's shot on a loose ball after a corner kick slid just wide of the right post with 15 seconds remaining.
Women’s Soccer (2-5/1-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 23rd vs. Oswego, W 2-1 (2OT)
Senior
Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) ended last Friday's SUNYAC opener for Oneonta State in the 103rd minute to give the Red Dragons a much-needed 2-1 victory versus Oswego. The win for Oneonta broke a two-game skid while also giving them a win in their home opener for 2011.
DeSimone took a pass from sophomore
Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston), who was on the left flank, and then made a move on a defender before sending a shot to the back of the goal giving Oneonta a win in front of the home crowd.
The Red Dragons fell behind early in this one as the Lakers were able to score less than three minutes into the game.
As the game wore on, Oneonta continued to wear down the Lakers, who were having trouble clearing the ball past midfield. In the 74th minute, Oneonta had back-to-back scoring chances that were taken off the goal line. After the second back save, freshman
Krystal Scott (Centereach/Newfield) got her own rebound and put a shot into the goal to even the score at 1-1.
Oneonta, who finished the game with a 17-8 shot advantage, had the only two shots during the extra session, which included DeSimone's game-winner early in the second overtime.
Sept. 24th vs. Cortland, L 1-2 (2OT)
After 108 minutes of soccer, the Oneonta Red Dragons fell to visiting rival Cortland, 2-1 in double OT last Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.
Cortland got on the board in the 19th minute when the left defender sent a thru ball to a forward who deposited it into Oneonta's net. DeSimone tied the game in the middle of the second half, scoring off a rebounded back save. The play started when Hamm’s shot towards Cortland’s keeper, was punched out and Oneonta's
Jenna McCarey (Middletown/Middletown) collected the loose ball and fired it right back in on goal where a defender saved it from going in but failed to clear it. DeSimone was there to collect the loose ball and fired it into the open net.
The game remained tied at the end of regulation and through the first overtime. The Red Dragons best chance to secure the victory was in the middle of the second overtime when McCarey had a breakaway opportunity that was just kicked wide by the Cortland keeper.
Minutes later Cortland's winger crossed the ball into the box where a Cortland player volleyed the pass into the lower left corner for the game-winning goal.
Oneonta's
Amy Lusby (
West Babylon/N.Babylon) recorded six saves.

Women’s Tennis (7-2/1-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 24th vs. Alfred, W 5-0; at Oswego, W 9-0
The Oneonta State women's tennis team didn't surrender a point last Saturday in sweeping Alfred and Oswego by the scores of 5-0 and 9-0 respectively. The matches, originally scheduled for Oneonta, were moved to Oswego after early weather reports predicted showers in the area for Saturday. Needless to say that the only rain that fell was on the parade of Oswego and Alfred.
Because the match was delayed by wet courts, Oneonta played to official NCAA completion in its match against Alfred. The two teams completed the doubles, but only completed two of the matches during singles play. Winners in both flights were junior
