Men’s Soccer (3-2-1/0-0 SUNYAC)
Sept. 16th vs. Christopher Newport, T 1-1 (2OT)
The Red Dragons took the No. 1 team in the NSCAA Coaches Div. III poll, the Christopher Newport University Captains into double overtime last Friday afternoon at Red Dragon Field, 1-1.
Junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored just 11 minutes into the game, cruising past two Captain defenders with a shot from the top of the 18. The game remained a midfield battle into the second period until Christopher Newport was able to draw one back with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
Christopher Newport had six opportunities to secure the win in overtime, but none of the shots reached the back of the goal. Their best chance to score came off a corner kick that floated to the back post and headed on frame. Oneonta's goalkeeper Maxwell Siegelman(Roslyn/Roslyn) came out of nowhere to parry the ball over the crossbar.
The Captains held a slight advantage in shots 14-9, and corner kicks, 12-5. Siegelman tallied seven saves for the Red Dragons.
Women’s Soccer (1-4/0-0 SUNYAC)
Sept. 17th at Trinity, L 0-1
The Oneonta State women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker last Saturday at Trinity College, 1-0 in the waning minutes of the game. The Bantams scored with 3:10 left in the game to secure the victory.
Oneonta's best opportunity to open the scoring occurred in the first ten minutes of play when senior Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent a ball in from the right flank that found the head of junior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches). Unfortunately, Brantmeyer's header hit the crossbar and was cleared out by a Trinity defender before a Red Dragon could follow it up.
Oneonta outshot the Bantams in a tightly contested battle, 9-8, and had some scoring opportunities late in the game, including a strong shot by senior Alanna Fisher (Suffern/Suffern) which sailed just high of the crossbar with 8:10 remaining.
Trinity hit the crossbar earlier in the match, and missed two opportunities on a corner kick late in the match, one of which resulted in a save by Amy Lusby (West Babylon/West Babylon), and another by an Oneonta defender off the goal line. Lusby had five saves in the game.
Sept. 18th at Williams, L 0-3
The Oneonta State women's soccer team dropped its second consecutive game in as many days on the road to Williams College 3-0. The game was played at MCLA as Williams' field was unplayable due to the recent flooding the region has seen.
Oneonta had several attacking runs from sophomore Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston) and senior DeSimone and the Red Dragons finally saw a chance with just over 18 minutes to play. Hamm took a direct kick from just outside the right side of the box. She got it into the center where senior Jenna McCarey (Middletown/Middletown) was able to get a piece of the ball, but the Ephs goalkeeper was able to get a hold of the ball.
Williams outshot Oneonta State 17-7 including 10-4 in the second half. The corner kicks were even with 3 apiece for the teams.
Lusby made eight saves for the Red Dragons.
Field Hockey (5-2/1-0 SUNYAC)
Sept. 17th vs. Houghton, W 3-1
Oneonta Red Dragons pushed past Houghton College last Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at All College Field, 3-1.
Five minutes into play junior Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Springs) put the Red Dragons on the board capitalizing on a penalty stroke. Fifteen minutes later freshman Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) connected a pass with freshman Kelcy Forbragd(Camden/Camden) for Oneonta's second goal. Junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) completed a perfect pass to Megan Warning (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) for their third and final goal of the game.
The Highlanders led in penalty corners, 10-7, while Oneonta held in advantage in shots, 11-5. Freshman Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) recorded one save.
Sept. 22nd at Misericordia, W 4-3
Four different players scored as the Oneonta State field hockey team won its third straight game last Wednesday at Misericordia, 4-3. Senior Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury) scored the game-winner with less than three minutes to go in regulation to break a 3-3 tie. The Red Dragons never trailed in the game as they raise its overall record to 5-2.
Oneonta took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when junior Morgan scored off an assist from Chelsea Remling (Mahopac/Lakeland).
After the Cougars tied the game in the 25th minute, sophomore Samantha Smith (Webster/Webster Thomas) put Oneonta ahead 2-1 in the 28th minute with an assist from classmate Carly Fuller (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs).
Misericordia tied the game in the 32nd minute and the two teams went into halftime knotted at two goals apiece.
Freshman Forbragd scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute to give the Red Dragons a one goal lead. For Forbragd, it was the third straight game that she has scored a goal.
The Cougars once again tied the score with a goal in the 54th minute before Camp's goal stood up for the final margin of victory.
Freshman Tracy made five saves in picking up her fifth win of the season.
Volleyball (7-6/0-0 SUNYAC)
Sept. 16th & 17th at Ducks Invitational at Stevens Institute
at Stevens, L 0-3; vs. Elmira, L 2-3; vs. Newbury, W 3-0; vs. Franklin College, W 3-0
The Oneonta State volleyball team broke even this past weekend at the Ducks Invitational hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. After dropping a pair last Friday, the Red Dragons bounced back with a pair of wins on Saturday.
Oneonta opened the two-day tournament with a 3-0 loss to host Stevens (24-26, 18-25, 19-25). Sophomore Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) was tops with six kills. Senior Jessica Zerega (New City/Clarkstown) had a team high seven digs while junior Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalpin Perth) had 17 assists.
In Oneonta's second match on day 1, the Red Dragons dropped a heartbreaker to Elmira in five sets, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 17-25, 11-15. Senior Christina Fabiochi (Manorville/Eastport South Manor), who was the lone Red Dragon selected to the All-Tournament Team, had 13 kills, 13 digs and four blocks. Calvello registered 28 assists and 22 digs.
On Saturday, Oneonta recorded back-to-back sweeps of Newbury College and Franklin (IN) College. Sophomore Bridget McHugh (New Hyde Park/Herricks-Albertson) led Oneonta with nine kills versus Newbury. Darpino had a monster match against Franklin with 17 kills. Freshman Kaitlyn Vishneowski (Glenmont/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) and junior Kailyn Welling (Yorktown Heights/Somers) each had 20 assists.
Men’s Cross Country
Sept. 17th in Oneonta State Airfield Invitational, T 1st place with 45 points
Last Saturday, the Oneonta State men's cross country team returned to its home course at Fortin Park to host the annual Airfield Invitational. The weather was a nearly perfect fifty-five degrees and it is really beginning to feel like cross country season. The Red Dragons seem to have found a rhythm early on this season. The footing on the course was next to ideal, the grass was cut short in most places and even the pockets of the park that traditionally get muddy were reasonably dry.
The men's team shared the victory with DeSales; both schools with scores of forty five points. Oneonta was led by the junior power trio of John Longo (Endwell/Maine Endwell), Chris Harvey (Kings Park/Kings Park) and Ben Reynolds (Endicott/Maine Endwell) all finished in the top ten of the meet. The men's team had a team average of 26:41 for the entire course, impressive seeing as this was the team's first eight kilometer race this season.
Harvey who ran a personal record by twenty four seconds had this to say: “The air felt nice…The entire team ran very well and I think that this performance bodes well for the upcoming championship season."
Women’s Cross Country
Sept. 17th in Oneonta State Airfield Invitational, 2nd place with 32 points
Last Saturday, the Oneonta State women's cross country team returned to its home course at Fortin Park to host the annual Airfield Invitational. The invitational pitted two of the top 10 teams in the Atlantic Region against each other, Oneonta (#10) and Ithaca (#9). The two squads ran away with the meet, but it was Ithaca that came out ahead by three points, 29 to 32.
Sophomore Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) had another tremendous race coming in second overall and first for the team. Senior Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill/Beacon) was the second Oneonta finisher in fifth place overall. Freshmen Caitlyn Kuzmich (Greenwich/Greenwich) and Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers/School of the Holy Child) continued their strong start to their collegiate careers coming in seventh and sixth respectively.
Women’s Tennis (5-2/1-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 16th at Brockport, W 5-4
Sept. 17th at Geneseo, L 0-9
The Oneonta State women's tennis team came home with a split this past weekend of a pair of matches at Brockport and Geneseo. The Red Dragons took three singles wins to edge Brockport last Friday, 5-4, but were swept on Saturday 9-0 by Geneseo.
Against Brockport, Oneonta won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Junior Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie) and sophomore Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) shut out Brockport's #1 duo 8-0. The freshmen tandem of Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe Woodbury) and Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) picked up an 8-6 win at second doubles.
Browarski, Sussman and Skolnick all won their singles matches in straight sets at first, second and third singles respectively to give the Red Dragons the win.
On Saturday versus Geneseo, the Red Dragons had a couple of close sets, but could register a point in the shutout loss.
