Weekly Sports Update - September 16, 2011

Men’s Soccer (3-2/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 10 vs. Ithaca, W 3-0

Junior Alex Shkreli (Bedford, Fox Lane) had a goal and an assist last Saturday in leading the Oneonta State men's soccer team to a 3-0 blanking of Ithaca College. Shkreli set up the first goal and then scored the second goal for Oneonta.

Neither squad mustered much of a sustained attack in the game. The Red Dragons finished the game with a 12-6 advantage in shots putting three to the back of the goal.

Shkreli set up the game's first goal on a great crossing pass from the left flank that junior Dan Scott (Salt Point, FD Roosevelt) volleyed by the keeper inside the left post.

Oneonta's final two goals came in the second half including Shkreli's in the 65th minute off an assist from senior Raymond Fitzpatrick (Garden City, Garden City).

Oneonta's final goal came off a corner kick when freshman Justin Rivera (Bay Shore, Bay Shore) sent a ball in from the right flag that found the head of junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley, Arlington) for a bang-bang goal with under two minutes to go in the contest.

Both goalkeepers made two stops in the contest. Junior Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn Heights, Roslyn) went the distance for Oneonta.

Sept. 13 at Rensselaer, W 1-0
Junior Shkreli scored the game's only goal and the Oneonta State men's soccer team held Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at bay as the Red Dragons defeated the Engineers, 1-0, in a non-league game at Renwyck Field last Tuesday.

The Red Dragons had the game's first solid chance at a goal in the 14th minute when senior Fitzpatrick headed a corner cross by Rivera to the top left of the goal before RPI goalkeeper grabbed the ball out of the air.

The Red Dragons broke through in the 19th minute off solid ball movement that resulted in the goal by Shkreli. Senior Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls, Glens Falls) sent the ball from the left side near the top of the box to the lower right to Fortier. Fortier crossed it to Shkreli, who was inside the six-yard box, and he volleyed the ball under the crossbar for his third goal of the year.

The goal against was the first allowed by RPI this season.

Rensselaer had an opportunity to tie the game early in the second half but the header from in tight to the goal was stopped by Siegelman, the Red Dragons keeper. The Engineers managed to sustain pressure throughout the latter half of the second frame but could not generate strong scoring chances.

Siegelman finished with two saves in the win for Oneonta, which held a 12-10 advantage in shots.

Women’s Soccer (1-2/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 13 at Hartwick, W 2-1 OT

Oneonta State senior Alanna Fisher (Suffern, Suffern) picked an opportune time to score her first collegiate goal as she lifted the Red Dragons to a 2-1 victory over Hartwick last Tuesday in double overtime. The goal came just 48 seconds into the second overtime to end the game between the city rivals.

The two teams went scoreless through the first extra session until Fisher was able to end the game with an assist from Krystal Scott (Centereach, Newfield).

Oneonta dominated the contest outshooting the Hawks (1-2) 23-3. Senior Amy Lusby (West Babylon, N. Babylon) made two saves.

After 78 minutes of scoreless soccer, junior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches, Center Moriches) got Oneonta on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season. It was an unassisted goal as Brantmeyer collected a loose ball off a deflected shot.

Volleyball (5-4/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 9 & 10 at Bomber Invitational in Ithaca College
vs. Widener, L 0-3; vs. Geneseo, L 1-3;
vs. Rutgers-Newark, W 3-0; vs. Baptist Bible, W 3-0

The Oneonta State volleyball team competed at the Bomber Invitational this past weekend hosted by Ithaca College and came away with a 2-2 record in its four matches. On Friday, the Red Dragons dropped a pair of matches to Widener (3-0) and Geneseo (3-1) before bouncing back last Saturday with a pair of sweeps versus Rutgers-Newark and Baptist Bible.

In the loss to Widener, junior Brittany Calvello (Gloversville, Broadalbin-Perth) had 11 assists while senior Jessica Zerega (New City, Clarkstown) had 10 digs to lead Oneonta.

Against Geneseo, senior Christina Fabiochi (Manorville, Eastport South Manor) led the Red Dragons with 12 kills. Newcomer Kaitlyn Vishneowski (Glenmont, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) fueled the attack with a team leading 26 assists while also anchoring the defensive effort with 14 digs.

Junior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton, Chenango Valley) led the Oneonta attack in its two wins last Saturday. She registered 12 kills versus Rutgers and 14 kills against Baptist Bible.

Calvello registered 49 assists in the two matches including 29 versus Baptist Bible. She also had 14 and 15 digs respectively in the two victories.

Sept. 13 vs. Scranton, W 3-1
The Oneonta State volleyball worked together last Tuesday to take a 3-1 win versus Scranton at home. The two squads battled closely for three of the four sets but, in the end, it was Oneonta that prevailed, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23.

Senior Fabiochi and junior Boburka were immense on the attack for the Red Dragons combining for 30 kills and only two errors. Fabiochi also added 17 digs and one block assist while Boburka had two block assists and 10 digs.

Junior Calbello fueled the attack with a team high 36 assists while also registering 22 digs in the match. Senior Zerega led the defensive effort with 23 digs.

Field Hockey (2-2/0-0- SUNYAC)

Sept. 10 vs. William Smith, L 2-3

Visiting William Smith took a 2-3 victory over host SUNY Oneonta last Saturday afternoon at Oneonta's All College Field.

The Herons got on the board in the 25th minute with a rebounded shot which carried the Herons into intermission.

Oneonta's Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Springs) tied the game 12 minutes into the second half off a penalty stroke. The Herons took a 3-1 lead after back-to-back goals.

The Red Dragons battled back in the last minutes of play when Megan Warning (Lake Peeksill, Putnam Valley) picked up a loose ball and blasted a shot to the back of the Herons cage to round out the days scoring.

Oneonta goalie Tess Tracy (Liverpool, Liverpool) finished the day with eight saves on 15 shots.

Sept. 14 at Skidmore, L 1-5
The Oneonta State field hockey team dropped it’s second consecutive game on the road to #5 ranked Skidmore, 1-5.

The Red Dragons were able to get on the board in the 62nd minute with a freshman combination. Andrea Day (Greene, Greene) was able to break down the wing and get a cross off in front of the goal to Kristen Jerauld (Whitney Point, Whitney Point) who finished it off.

Oneonta was outshot by Skidmore 17-6.

Goalkeeper Tracy made 11 saves on the day.

Men’s Cross Country

Sept. 10 at New Paltz Invitational, 1st place with 44 points

This past weekend, the Oneonta State Red Dragons traveled to Bowdoin State Park to race at SUNY New Paltz's home course and the location for the SUNYAC championships latter this season. Junior John Longo (Endwell, Maine-Endwell) led the men to a first place finish while senior. The men scored 44 points and Longo was the fourth man to cross the line.

There were a few kinks in the racing process on Saturday. Weather conditions obstructed the course and led to both the men and women's race lengths to be altered to obscure numbers: 4.71 miles for the men.

On top of the course's new route, times were also slowed by muddy conditions caused by the tumultuous weather upstate New York has endured the past two weeks and the Parks extreme proximity to the Hudson River.

Despite the changes in the race lengths both men and women's team from Oneonta were able to find success. Junior Ben Reynolds (Endicott, Maine-Endwell) had a second straight strong showing as Oneonta's second runner on the men's side. Cracking the top seven were also made by the twin rookies Andrew Bohunicky (Johnson City, Maine-Endwell) and David Bohunicky (Johnson City, Maine-Endwell).

Women’s Cross Country

Sept. 10 at New Paltz Invitational, 2nd place with 30 points

Over the weekend the Oneonta State Red Dragons traveled to Bowdoin State Park to race at SUNY New Paltz's home course and the location for the SUNYAC championships latter this season. Senior Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill, Beacon) led the women with a second place finish overall as Oneonta scored 30 points, one point behind the hosts.

There were a few kinks in the racing process on Saturday. Weather conditions obstructed the course and led to the women's race lengths to be altered to obscure numbers: 3.47 miles for the women.

On the women's side, sophomore Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point, Albertus Magnus) was only seconds behind Brunetto. Freshman Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers, School of the Holy Child) was the third runner for Oneonta and placed sixth overall in the meet.

Women’s Tennis (4-1/1-1 SUNYAC)

Sept. 9 at New Paltz, L 1-8
Sept. 10 vs. Plattsburgh (at New Paltz), W 5-4

The Oneonta State women's tennis team traveled to New Paltz this weekend and came away with a split of a pair of matches in SUNYAC East Division play. Last Friday, the Red Dragons fell to the host Hawks, 8-1 before bouncing back last Saturday with a hard fought 5-4 win versus Plattsburgh.

The lone point for Oneonta in the defeat came at first doubles as junior Danielle Browarski (Colonie, Colonie) and partner Lauren Skolnick (Sayville, Sayville) defeated Montana Wilson and Paige Munroe, 8-5.

Browarski and Wilson also faced each other at first singles with Wilson coming out on top in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In Satuday's win against Plattsburgh, Oneonta at first and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles. Browarski, and freshmen Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills, Monroe-Woodbury) and Colette Lankowicz (Sayville, Sayville) won at first, second and fifth singles to clinch the match for the Red Dragons.

Sept. 12 vs. Elmira, W 9-0
The Oneonta State women's tennis team improved to 4-1 this season with a 9-0 decision over visiting Elmira College last Monday afternoon. Led by an 8-0 score from the #3 doubles combination of Christina Wlodarczyk (Avoca, Avoca Central) and Brandyn McDermott (Canastota, Chittanango), the Red Dragons swept all three doubles matches.

In singles play, Oneonta State did not lose a set, and were led by co-captain Skolnick’s 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles.
