Weekly Sports Update - April 1, 2011

Women’s Lacrosse (0-7/0-0)

Mar. 29th at Franklin & Marshall College, L 4-15

The SUNY Oneonta Women’s Lacrosse team dropped another game on the road to Franklin & Marshall last Tuesday.

Franklin & Marshall got out to a quick start with three goals in the first six minutes of play. Oneonta was able to get on the board at 11:47 on a goal by freshman Taylor O'Brien (Northport, Northport).

The Red Dragons were able to pull the game back to one goal in the sixteenth minute when junior Rebecca Monteith (West Islip, West Islip) scored her first of two goals on the day off an assist from sophomore Caroline Tulley (Malverne, Sacred Heart Academy).

The Diplomats then rattled off eleven goals over the next twenty seven minutes to stretch their lead to 14-2.

Oneonta scored two goals in the last quarter of the game. Junior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip, East Islip) picked up her third goal of the season while Monteith scored her nineteenth of the season. Tulley had three assists on the day.

Oneonta was outshot by Franklin & Marshall 30-9.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-6/0-0)

Mar. 29th at Hamilton, L 5-14

SUNY Oneonta sophomore John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks, Chenango Forks) scored a pair of goals last Tuesday, but the men’s lacrosse team fell on the road to Hamilton 14-5.

Sophomore Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley, Putnam Valley) added one goal, one assist and five ground balls for Oneonta, which will face #4 Cortland on Saturday at home. Classmate Brian Kollar (East Islip, East Islip) and Daniel Stern (Shoreham, Shoreham-Wading River) notched one goal apiece, and Brian Kollar (East Islip, East Islip) picked up an assist. Junior Hugh O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, Putnam Valley) scooped up six ground balls, and freshman John Young (West Babylon, West Babylon) caused three turnovers. Junior Chris Miles (Manlius, Fayetteville Manlius) made nine saves.

Hamilton scored the first three goals and led the entire game, but the Red Dragons stayed close through the middle of the third quarter. Oneonta pulled to within 3-2 and 4-3 before the Continentals settled for a 5-3 lead at the break.

Hamilton took a 6-3 cushion 93 seconds into the third quarter. The Red Dragons scored two goals 14 seconds apart to climb within one goal for the final time. DeOrdio tallied his ninth of the season with 9:45 left in the third, and Salerno made the score 6-5 on his sixth goal on an assist from van de Veerdonk with 9:31 remaining.

Baseball (8-6/3-0)

Mar. 29th at Farmingdale State, W 6-5 (10 innings)

Junior Joshua Herzenberg (White Plains, White Plains) pitched five scoreless innings in relief last Tuesday as the SUNY Oneonta baseball team outlasted Farmingdale 6-5 in 10 innings. Playing its first game up north, the Red Dragons took advantage of seven Ram errors in picking up its fifth win of the season. Herzenberg struck out two batters while allowing six hits.

The eventual winning run was driven in by sophomore Michael DeCarr (Syracuse, Westhill), who hit an RBI single to center field to drive in junior Michael Center (Schenectady, Schenectady), who reached on a one-out error. DeCarr finished the game with a pair of hits and a pair of runs batted in. Junior catcher Eric Wells (Athens, PA, Athens) led Oneonta with three hits.

Farmingdale took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Oneonta grabbed the lead in third with three runs scored on four hits and one error for a 3-2 score. Center led off the inning with a walk and stole second and came around to score on a triple down the right field line by junior Kevin Knack (Ghent , Ichabod Crane). Knack would score on an RBI double by DeCarr. After stealing third, DeCarr would score on a single through the left side by Wells.

The Rams struck back in the fifth with three runs.. Bohonan scored on an Oneonta error for a 5-3 lead.

Oneonta tied the game with single runs in the sixth and seventh thanks to a pair of errors by the Rams that led to two unearned runs.

Mar. 30th vs. Fredonia, W 5-1 & W 2-0
In his 30th season as a head coach and his 16th at the helm of the Red Dragons, Rick Ferchen reached his 700th victory in the first game of the double-header versus conference rivals Fredonia.

Ferchen is 12th amongst all Div. III active coaches in victories and T-19th All-Time in victories. With today’s feat, he joins only 18 other Div. III coaches who have eclipsed 700 wins.

Previous to Oneonta, Ferchen spent eight years at Hobart College and six years coaching Div. I Valparaiso.

In the first game, senior Ken Smith (Ossining, Ossining) battled with Fredonia's Brian Lansing as both pitchers held the bats to four scoreless innings. In the top of the fifth Fredonia was first to get on the board after playing small ball via a sac bunt then a sac fly.

The bottom of the fifth the Red Dragons answered. Junior Matthew Whelehan (Brooklyn, Midwood) got the bats going as he hit a liner down the left field line giving Oneonta the 2-1 lead.

Next at bat junior Center hit a triple to right scoring Whelehan. Following that junior Knack hit a single to center field scoring center to put the Red Dragons ahead 4-1.

Oneonta scored again in the 6th to go up 5-1 and junior Corey Andresen (Deposit, Deposit) came in to record the save holding off Fredonia.

In game two, it was the other Smith, Christopher Smith (Colonie, Colonie), who shut out Fredonia as the Red Dragons defeat the Blue Devils 2-0.

Oneonta went ahead in the first as sophomore Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa) doubled to right center scoring sophomore DeCarr.

Smith struck out the side in the second, third, and fourth innings and ended the game with 10 strikeouts.

In the fourth, it was Marotta in the action again, he came around to score after a single up the left side of the field, he stole second, and scored off senior Pete Lindner (Voorheesville, Voorheesville)’s double to left.

Freshman Jake Robinson (East Norwich, Oyster Bay) came in the ninth to capture the save with two strikeouts.

Mar. 31st vs. Fredonia, W 5-4
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team trailed by a run entering the bottom of the ninth inning last Thursday before plating a pair to defeat visiting Fredonia 5-4 in SUNYAC action. With the win, Oneonta sweeps the regular season series from the Blue Devils after having won both games last Wednesday.

The bottom of the ninth began with a infield single by senior Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta, Oneonta), who hustled down the line to beat the throw from the shortstop. Junior Whelehan then sacrificed Wolfanger to second to put him in scoring position. The next batter, junior Center, singled through the right side just by the dive of the first baseman to score Wolfanger, who slid in to beat the throw.

Junior Knack then squared around to bunt to move Center to second base, but he legged out a single as he beat the throw from a charging third baseman. Center scored the game winning run on a single to center field by sophomore DeCarr.

DeCarr drove in the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning today on a ground out to the shortstop, which drove in Knack, who tripled to the wall in right-center field.

Fredonia tied the game at one apiece in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single to center field.
Knack doubled to centerfield to start the sixth inning for Oneonta. Two batters later he came around to score on a bloop single over the first baseman’s head by sophomore Marotta.

Fredonia struck for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead. A hit batter started the inning. After getting two outs, an infield single kept the inning alive for the Blue Devils. A drive to centerfield plated the first runner and a second run scored on a single to left-centerfield.

The Red Dragons cut the lead to a single run with a run in the home half of the eighth inning thanks to an error by the Fredonia second baseman, which allowed Marotta to score from third base.

Wolfanger and Knack both had three hits to lead the offense. Junior Chris Tyson (Niskayuna, Niskayuna) pitched 1-1/3 innings allowing only one hit to pick up his first win of the season. Starter Anthony Bates (Utica, Proctor) pitched six innings and allowed one run and two hits while striking out seven batters.

Men’s Tennis (5-4)

 Mar. 30th at Elmira, W 8-1

The Oneonta State Men’s Tennis team went on the road and defeated Elmira College last Wednesday 8-1 at Murray Athletics Center.

The Red Dragons swept the single matches on the day allowing only nineteen total points against them. The closest match of the day was played by senior John Taft (Queensbury, Glens Falls). He was able to defeat Steffan Waters, 6-3 and 6-3 to pick up the win. The other winners at singles were senior William Sacco (Canandaigua, Naples), juniors Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway, Lynbrook) and Joshua Slifkin (Ojai, CA, Nordhoff) and freshmen Alex Holdstein (Hastings-on-Hudson, Hastings) and Michael Kennelly (Irvington, Irvington).

 Sacco and Holdstein also picked up a win at third doubles by a score of 8-0. The last point was won by the duo of Shaprio and Slifkin, who defeated their opponent 8-1.
