Women’s Basketball (16-5/10-3)
Feb. 4th at Buffalo State, L 49-57
Junior Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills, New York Mills) scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but the SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team fell at Buffalo State 57-49 in SUNYAC action last Friday evening. The loss for the Red Dragons is the first time this year that they have dropped back-to-back games this season.
The two teams were tied three times during the first half, each time Oneonta taking the lead. The third tie came at 15 apiece with just under six minutes to go in the opening half. A basket by Szkotak broke the tie and five points off the bench by senior Erika Puffer (Unadilla, Unatego) helped Oneonta take a 26-21 lead at the break.
A jumper by senior Mary Kate O'Connell (Altamont, Guilderland) gave Oneonta its largest lead of the game at 36-28 less than seven minutes into the second half. Buffalo State countered with a 13-1 run to take a 41-37 lead at the nine-minute mark.
Oneonta got as close as two points the rest of the way as the hosts pulled away in the final five minutes of the game. Buffalo State’s final 10 points of the game came from the free throw line.
Junior Madison Slagle (Rome, Rome Catholic) was the only other player to reach double figures for Oneonta tonight with 11 points.
Feb. 5th at Fredonia, W 65-61
The SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team overcame a twelve point halftime deficit and pulled out a 65-61 win last Saturday on the road versus Fredonia. Three Red Dragons scored in double figures led by junior Slagle, who scored 15 points, including 13 after halftime, to lead the comeback.
Sophomore Gabi Regan (Troy, Columbia) came off the bench to add 12 points, eight of which came in the second half, and freshman Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River, Pearl River) scored a collegiate high 11 points in the win.
Oneonta trailed from the opening tip, finding themselves down by 11 points in the first four minutes of the contest. The Red Dragons were down by as many as 20 points with less than nine minutes to go before closing the gap to 36-24 at the break.
Oneonta was still trailing by 10 points at the 13:53 mark of the second half before starting to chip away at Fredonia’s lead. Sophomore Kate Wilverding (Manalapan, NJ, St. John Vianney) capped an 8-2 spurt with a lay-up at 11:13 that cut the lead to four points.
After a three-point basket Fredonia, Oneonta scored eight unanswered to take its first lead of the game at 50-49 with 7:18 remaining.
The lead continued to change hands for the next three minutes until the game was knotted at 56 apiece with 4:15 left to go. The Red Dragons took the lead for good with a 7-2 run capped by a Slagle lay-up as the held on for the well-earned, four-point win.
Men’s Basketball (6-15/5-9)
Feb. 4th at Buffalo State, L 62-75
Three players scored in double figures, but the SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball team fell at Buffalo State 75-62 last Friday evening in SUNYAC action. The loss for the Red Dragons was its fourth straight.
Senior Troy Talbot (Brooklyn, The School for Legal Studies) led a trio of seniors for Oneonta with 17 points. Classmates Derek Hahn (Youngsville, Sullivan West) and Shane Gillette (Hurley, Kingston) scored 15 and 14 points respectively. Hahn also added a game high 16 rebounds.
A three-point basket by senior Brian Hooks (Cohoes, Shaker)gave Oneonta an early 7-2 lead in the contest. Buffalo State battled back to take a 13-11 lead at the 9:28 mark of the first half on a three-pointer.
The two teams took turns at gaining the lead back before Buffalo State grabbed the final lead of the opening half at 27-23.
Buffalo State created some breathing room over a four minute span early in the second half to increase its lead to 12 points at 44-32. A lay-up capped a 13-3 run by the Bengals.
Oneonta battled its way back and cut Buffalo State’s lead to two points at 49-47 on a pair of free throws by Talbot. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Red Dragons would be for the remainder of the contest as the Bengals put the game away with a 25-8 run over a seven minute span to give them a 73-55 lead with 1:52 left in the contest.
Feb. 5th at Fredonia, L 51-52
The SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball team made a late run, but came up one point short in a 52-51 loss at Fredonia last Saturday in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons trailed 51-41 with 3:09 left in the contest and nearly pulled out a win with a 10-1 run over the final three minutes.
Senior Hahn recorded his tenth double-double of the season and his third straight, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Hahn was 10-of-12 from the field while adding a pair of blocks.
Oneonta led for the first part of the first half before Fredonia went ahead for the first time at 16-15 at the 10:30 mark. After a Talbot free throw tied the score, the Blue Devils ran off 10 straight points to lead 26-16 with 4:41 to go in the opening half. Oneonta cut into Fredonia’s lead, but still trailed at the break 28-24.
Oneonta grabbed the lead back at 33-32 at the 14:05 mark of the second half on a lay-up by Hahn. The Red Dragons built its lead to 39-34 before the Blue Devils countered with a 17-2 run that gave them its 10-point lead with 3:09 remaining.
Talbot scored six of Oneonta’s final 10 points of the game and finished with 13 points. Classmate Hooks added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Red Dragons.
Wrestling (13-6-1)
Feb. 5th at Quad Meet (vs. Williams, W 22-19; vs. Wesleyan, L 15-24; vs. Plymouth, W 30-18)
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed at Williams College last Saturday in a quad meet and came away 2-1 on the day against three nationally ranked squads. Oneonta defeated #30 Williams and #28 Plymouth State, but fell to #26 Wesleyan.
Leading the Red Dragons today was senior Michael Gregg (Islip, Islip) and sophomoreJP Sala (Islip, Islip), who both went a perfect 3-0 on the day. Senior Brian Kramer (Hopkinton, MA, Hopkinton) recorded a pair of wins in head-to-head completion as the only other Red Dragon to register multiple wins.
In Oneonta’s 22-19 win against Williams, the Red Dragons trailed the hosts 16-3 through the first five bouts. Gregg jump-started the comeback with a major decision at 141 lbs. against Carson Brooks, 14-2. Freshman Dan Graff (LaGrangeville, Arlington) and Sala recorded the next two wins for Oneonta at 149 lbs. and 157 lbs. respectively. Both wrestlers received forfeits, which gave the Red Dragons a 19-16 lead entering the bout at 165 lbs.
After a loss at 165 lbs. by Frankie Provenzano (Islip, Islip), 8-3, freshman Chris Gevinski (Jamesport, Riverhead)) won the match in the final bout of the match at 174 lbs., a 4-0 decision over Zeb Levine.
Gregg’s final two wins today came by a decision and a pin while Sala had a 5-4 decision versus Troy Sampson of Wesleyan and a pin against Travis Brooks of Plymouth State in 59 seconds.
Feb. 9th vs. Morrisville, W 31-10
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team manhandled the visiting Mustangs of Morrisville last Wednesday in its final dual meet of the season. The Red Dragons, who entered the night’s match ranked No. 30 in the latest Div. III poll, won 31-10 to finish with an overall record of 13-6-1.
After receiving a forfeit win at 133 lbs., Oneonta won the next three weight classes to break the match wide open. Senior Gregg scored four points with a 10-2, major decision at 141 lbs. Freshman Graff registered a 3-0 decision at 149 lbs. and sophomore Sala capped the streak with a fall in 4:57 against Spencer Brady at 157 lbs.
Senior Kramer clinched the match for the Red Dragons at 184 lbs. with a pin of Wheeler Brunschmid. Kramer trailed in the match early in the third period before turning Brunschmid and recording the fall.
Freshman Stephen Provenzano (Islip, Islip) and senior James Lamonica (Staten Island, Monsignor Farrell) closed the match for Oneonta with wins at 197 and 285 lbs.
Women’s Track & Field
Feb. 5th at Springfield Invitational, 1st place with 198 points
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field team competed last Saturday at the Springfield Invitational and came away with a first place team finish.
The women scored 198 points to finish ahead of host Springfield, who scored 186 points.
For the third consecutive week, sophomore Kacy Boburka (Binghamton, Chenango Valley) led the women, breaking her own school record while bettering her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the high jump. Boburka dominated the field clearing a height of 1.68 meters, currently tying her for fourth in the nation. She also placed third in the long jump and was fifth in the shot put to score a total of 20 points on the day.
Junior Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill, Beacon) swept the field by over two seconds in the 600m dash with a time of 1:39.19 which qualified her for the 500m dash at the ECAC championships.
The trio of senior Celia Alterio (Amherst, Amherst), freshman Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point, Albertus Magnus), and sophomore Pam Ernst (Miller Place, Miller Place) finished first, second, and third in the mile earning 24 points for the team.
Freshmen Michelle Chartrand (Boiceville, Onteora) and Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats, Edmeston) battled again this week for victory in the long jump. Chartrand just edged out Hamm with a leap of 4.84 meters.
Later in the day Hamm came away with her own first place finish as she reached 10.76 meters in the triple jump qualifying her for the ECAC championship.
Junior Sarah Timmons (Schodack, Maple Hill) was the final Red Dragon to defeat the field for a first place finish in the weight throw. Her heave of 15.16 meters beat the field by over a meter and a half and solidified her qualifying mark for the ECAC championships.
Men’s Track & Field
Jan. 5th at Springfield Invitational, 2nd place with 123 points
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field team competed last Saturday at the Springfield Invitational and came away with a second place team finish.
Highlighting the men’s side of things was the Distance Medley Relay consisting of sophomores Nate Weber (LaFayette, Tully) and John Longo (Endwell, Maine-Endwell), junior Dan Bruton (Waterford, Shenendehowa), and senior Nick Pampena (King's Park, King's Park), who crossed the line with a time of 10:48.02, over 30 seconds faster than the second place team from Trinity College.
Junior Sean Wren (Delanson, Duanesburg) dominated the field in the 400m dash finishing first in the time of 51.21.
The Red Dragons finished first again in the next event on the track as freshman Tom Haskins (Tully, Tully) crossed the line first in the open 600m run with a time of 1:24.63.
Later in the day it was Longo, Pampena, and Weber who finished first, second, and third in the men’s mile. Longo crossed the line in first in a time of 4:29.90, followed by Pampena in 4:30.03, with Weber shortly behind in a time of 4:32.75.
Sophomore Jared Reynolds (Coeymans Hollow, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had a solid day winning the 3000m run in a time of 9:08.24 qualifying him for the SUNYAC championships.
In the field events, sophomore Dustin Cox (Pulaski, Pulaski) captured the high jump, clearing a height of 1.93 meters and freshman Ulysses Miles (Rochester, Fairport) hit the ECAC qualifying mark in the triple jump with a leap of 13.59 meters.
