Men’s Soccer (12-2-2/8-0-1 SUNYAC)
Oct. 21st at Buffalo State, W 3-0
Oneonta remained atop the SUNYAC standings with one game remaining, defeating host Buffalo State 3-0 last Friday at Coyer Field. The win extended Oneonta's unbeaten streak to 13 games while putting them one win away from clinching the SUNYAC regular season title outright.
Buffalo State generated the best scoring chances in the opening minutes, but Oneonta broke through in the 31st minute on a long blast inside the right post by
Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington). The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute when
Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) converted on a penalty kick after being pulled down from behind on a breakaway.
Oneonta continued to control play into the second half, and
Dan Josepher (Manorville/Eastport S. Manor) extended the advantage with the game's final goal in the 60th minute, netting a slicing shot from a bad angle.
Oneonta outshot Buffalo State, 15-7, for the game, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) and
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/CNS) combined to post the shutout for the Red Dragons without making a save.
Oct. 22nd at Fredonia, W 4-2
The Oneonta State men's soccer team captured its first outright SUNYAC regular season title last Saturday when it defeated Fredonia on the road 4-2. The Red Dragons finished its conference schedule with an 8-0-1 record to finish ahead of Brockport, who finished 8-1.
With the regular season title in hand, Oneonta, which is unbeaten in its last 14 games, earned the No. 1 overall seed, home field throughout and a first round bye for the upcoming SUNYAC tournament, which begins next Saturday with first round games. This is the second straight year that Oneonta has earned the top seed for the conference tournament.
Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of today's match. Senior
Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) scored in the 11th minute off an assist from classmate
Nicholas Lange (Freeville/Dryden). Laronde then assisted on the next goal with a nice crossing pass that junior Fortier redirected into the back of the goal.
Fredonia cut Oneonta's lead to one goal five minutes later.
Coming out of halftime, Oneonta held its 2-1 lead until the 56th minute when a Fredonia player was fouled in the box and then converted a penalty kick to tie the score at two apiece.
The Red Dragons tacked on two more goals within five minutes of each other to secure the win. Junior
Jean (JP) Arenas (White Plains/White Plains) scored an unassisted goal to give Oneonta a 3-2 lead before classmate Josepher scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute off an assist from junior
Dan Scott (Salt Point/FD Roosevelt).
Oneonta goalie, Siegelman made three saves in goal.
Women’s Soccer (7-8-1/4-4-1 SUNYAC)
Oct. 21st vs. Buffalo State, W 1-0
A first half goal by senior
Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was all the Oneonta State women needed last Friday in picking up a 1-0 shutout win versus visiting Buffalo State in SUNYAC women's soccer action.
DeSimone's goal was scored in the 23rd minute with an assist from her sister
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). Karly passed the ball into the 12 before Dana sent a shot along the ground that found its way to the back of the goal. It was Dana's fifth goal of the season while the assist for Karly was her first point of the 2011 season.
Senior
Amy Lusby (West Babylon/N. Babylon) made four saves in picking up her fifth shutout on the season.
Oct. 22nd vs. Fredonia, L 1-2
Oneonta Women's Soccer was upended last Saturday afternoon by visiting Fredonia, 2-1. All scoring took place in the second half of the game with the final goal scored in the 74
th minute by Fredonia.
Oneonta dominated the opening half of play firing 12 shots on the Blue Devils goal with Fredonia managing five in the first 45 minutes of play.
Forty-five seconds into the second half, Fredonia earned an indirect kick 25 yards out. The Blue Devils served the ball into Oneonta's box where a player grounded the ball to the far right post.
In the 70
th minute, the Red Dragon offense battled back and capitalized on a scramble in front of Fredonia's net.
Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound from a Blue Devils defender. K. DeSimone had a shot that saved prior to Glowa's goal.
Four minutes later, Fredonia had a fast break opportunity and sent a through ball into the 12 to another player who one-touched it passed Oneonta’s Lusby for the eventual winning goal.
Oneonta outshot Fredonia 19-9 and lead in corners, 7-0. Lusby tallied five saves for the Red Dragons.

Oct. 26th vs. Ithaca, L 0-2
The Oneonta State women's soccer team fell at home to Ithaca, 2-0, last Wednesday afternoon in its regular season finale.
The visiting Bombers scored once in each half for the final margin of victory. Their first goal came in the 21st minute when sophomore a Bomber put a shot over the head of Oneonta goalie,
Lusby from about 35 yards out.
The Bomber's final goal came in the 78th minute on a breakaway.
Oneonta's best scoring chance of the match came in the 69th minute of the game when they had a flurry of shots off a corner kick, but came away empty.
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) got her head on a corner kick service by sophomore
Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston), but the ball was taken off the goal line as it snuck by the Ithaca keeper.
Field Hockey (12-6/4-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 22nd at Rensselaer, L 1-2
Powered by a pair of goals in the second half, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team came-from-behind to defeat visiting Oneonta State, 2-1 in non-conference action at Harkness Field.
The Red Dragons struck first in the opening stanza as leading scorer,
Megan Warning (Lake Peekskill, NY/Putnam Valley), hammered home a rebound to the right of RPI net minder. Off an Oneonta State corner, senior
Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) took the first shot that the goalkeeper was able to kick save. The ball stayed loose in traffic and Warning found it for the tally at 15:15.
Trailing 1-0 after the opening half of action, the Engineers rallied back into the game as they banged in their own rebound at the left post at 55:41. RPI, which at one point faced a 17-0 shots deficit in the opening stanza, pushed down the field.
Tied with less than seven minutes remaining, Rensselaer grabbed the lead as the Engineers sent a quick shot past Red Dragons goalie
Tess Tracy (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). The first shot, which was saved, rebounded out to another player who crossed it in front for the one-timer.
Rensselaer played solid defense over the final minutes of the game, dominating the ball in the Oneonta State offensive zone to secure the victory.
In goal, Tracy made nine saves in the loss. Both teams each recorded a defensive save.
For the game, the Red Dragons held a 28-26 advantage in shots, and were dominant on corners by a 16-8 margin.
Oct. 26th at Utica, W 3-2
Junior
Warning scored a pair of goals last Wednesday afternoon to lead the Oneonta State field hockey team to a 3-2 victory versus Utica on the road. Oneonta bounced back nicely from its loss at Rensselaer this past Saturday to equal last year's win total with one final regular season game remaining at Union on Friday.
Oneonta got on the scoreboard early today with a goal in the fifth minute of the contest. Warning converted a pass from classmate
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) in directing it by the Utica goalie for the 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers came back to tie the score six minutes later.
Despite out shooting Utica 10-2 in the opening half of play, the two teams went to halftime tied 1-1.
Warning was at it again as she notched her team-leading 17th goal of the season less than three minutes into the second half. This time she knocked it home off a penalty corner.
Senior
Camp gave Oneonta a two-goal lead with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute.
Utica converted a penalty stroke in the 68th minute, but the game was in hand for the Red Dragons.
Rookie goalie,
Tracy made 13 saves to pick up her 12th win of the season.
Volleyball (15-19/4-4 SUNYAC)
Oct. 21st & 22nd in East Pool Play at Plattsburgh
vs. Plattsburgh, W 3-0; vs. Cortland, L 1-3; vs. New Paltz, L 2-3; vs. Potsdam,, W 3-0
The Oneonta State women's volleyball team has qualified for the SUNYAC tournament after completing a 4-4 record overall in the East Division including a 2-2 record this past weekend at Plattsburgh. This year's tournament will take place Nov. 3-5 at Cortland, who won the East with an 8-0 record. The top three teams from the East and the top three teams from the West will be the competitors. The conference tournament champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Div. III championships.
Oneonta split its four matches this weekend to finish 4-4 in the East. Oneonta defeated both Plattsburgh and Potsdam while dropping matches to Cortland and New Paltz.
For the weekend, junior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and sophomore
Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) led Oneonta's attack with 54 and 35 kills respectively. Boburka had a .409 hitting percentage while Darpino had a .341 hitting percentage and a team high 20 total blocks.
Junior
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) fueled the attack with 150 assists to go with 10 blocks. Senior
Jessica Zerega (New City/Clarkstown) led the defense with 78 digs.
