Men’s Soccer (10-2-2/6-0-1 SUNYAC)

Oct. 15th vs. New Paltz, W 2-1
All of the scoring in last Saturday’s SUNYAC match between Oneonta State and New Paltz came in the first half with the host Red Dragons getting the better of the visiting Hawks, 2-1, in front of more than 500 alums, family and friends on Homecoming Saturday.  The Red Dragons are now unbeaten in its last 12 games while remaining unbeaten atop the SUNYAC standings.

Oneonta actually trailed 1-0 in the match.  A Hawk took a pass from a teammate and then blasted a shot over the head on Oneonta keeper, Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn).

Oneonta didn't waste anytime in tying the score as less than one minute later senior Raymond Fitzpatrick (Garden City/Garden City) collected a loose ball at the top of the arc just outside the box and drilled a shot that hit the cross bar, deflected straight down, before going into the goal.

The game-winner today came 15 minutes later by junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington), who notched his team-leading eighth goal of the season.  Senior Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) started the play as he broke free with the ball and got into the box where he sent a pass across to Fortier.  Fortier was able to slide a shot by the New Paltz keeper into the lower right corner of the goal.

The shots were even at 12 apiece while Oneonta held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Women’s Soccer (6-6-1/4-2-1 SUNYAC)

Oct. 18th at New Paltz, L 0-1
The Oneonta State women’s soccer team went on the road last Tuesday to play New Paltz and was defeated 1-0 on a goal in the 87th minute.

The Red Dragons controlled most of the play taking 23 shots to the Hawks 9, but could not find the back of the net. They also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The best opportunities for Oneonta came early in the second half. The first was a direct kick taken by sophomore Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) that found the head of classmate Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). DeSimone was able to flick on the ball to sister, Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), but she was unable to put the ball on goal.

About 10 minutes later, sophomore Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston), took a corner kick that fell to the feet of junior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches), but could muster enough power to put it past the keeper.

Field Hockey (11-5/4-2 SUNYAC)

Oct. 14th vs. Brockport, W 3-2
The Oneonta State field hockey team picked up a key SUNYAC victory last Friday versus visiting Brockport, 3-2.  The win for the Red Dragons moved them into playoff contention ahead of the Golden Eagles should they finished tied in the final regular season standings.

Three different Red Dragons scored in the game with sophomore Stephanie Fiske (Marathon/Marathon) leading the offense with a goal and an assist.  She scored the first goal of the game that gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead that they took into halftime.  She added her assist on the game-winning goal in the 56th minute.

Trailing 1-0, Brockport tied the game in the 45th minute.

Less than one minute later, freshman Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) put Oneonta back in front with an assist from junior Suzanne Wright(Hudson/Germantown Central).

Brockport evened the score at two with a goal in the 53rd minute.

The game-winning goal was scored by junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley), who took the pass from Fiske off a penalty corner before blasting it by the Brockport goalie.

Oct. 15th vs. Geneseo, W 1-0
The Oneonta State field hockey team made its early goal stand up last Saturday in a 1-0 win versus SUNY Geneseo.  The victory for Oneonta secured second place for the regular season and the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC tournament that will be hosted by Cortland during the weekend of Nov. 4-5.

The game-winner was scored by freshman Day in the seventh minute with an assist from junior Morgan. Morgan was able to get a pass across the circle where Day took a shot that scooted between the pads of Geneseo goalie.

Despite being outshot (13-6) and out-cornered (15-4) Oneonta was able to hold off the charging Blue Knights for the remaining 63 minutes en route to the win.  Freshman Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) made six saves in the game in recording the shutout.

Oct. 19th vs. Hartwick, W 6-3
The Putnam Valley connection of juniors, Morgan and Megan Warning (Lake Peeksill/Putnam Valley), were at it last Wednesday night with two goals and an assist each as they paced Oneonta State field hockey to a 6-3 win against cross-city rival Hartwick College.

Earlier today the NCAA released its first regional rankings and Oneonta found itself at No. 5 in the North Atlantic Region.  Oneonta has played three of the four teams ahead of them with a game this Saturday versus the fourth team, Rensselaer.  Oneonta did not win any of the previous three contests against any of the teams they've played, so a win at Rensselaer on Saturday will be important for next week's rankings.

Hartwick got on the scoreboard first.  A Hawk was able to dribble into the circle and pulled the ball around Oneonta goalie, Tracy, before putting the ball in the goal.

Less than three minutes later, freshman Day tied the score for the Red Dragons with an assist from Warning.  Warning passed the ball into the circle where Day deflected the ball by Hartwick goalie.

Oneonta took a 3-1 lead into halftime on the strength of a pair of unassisted goals.  Morgan scored in the ninth minute while Warning scored in the 29th minute.

Junior Wright notched her second goal of the season early in the second half to give Oneonta a 4-1 lead.

Oneonta rallied from an early 2-5 deficit in the opening set to win 25-18.  Oneonta took an 8-7 lead and never looked back en route to the opening set victory.

Ithaca took the second set 25-19.  The Bombers broke a 12 all tie with a pair of points to give them enough cushion that Oneonta couldn't overcome.

The third set went pretty much like the first set, with Oneonta getting a one-point lead at 10-9 and never surrendering the lead on its way to winning 25-19.

The two teams battled closely in the fourth set and were tied at 18-18 before Ithaca closed out the match with seven unanswered points in a 25-18 win.

Men’s Cross Country & Women’s Cross Country

Oct. 15th at Connecticut College Invitational
Men finished in 5th place with 143 points
Women finished in 5th place with 140 points
The Oneonta State men's and women's cross country teams continued to rally and roll forward as they traveled to the Connecticut College Invitational in Waterford, CT.  With both teams finishing fifth overall in the entire meet, the teams continue to look strong as a whole as the season transitions into its final third.  Although other representatives from the SUNYAC competed in the Invitational this weekend such as Plattsburgh and New Paltz, this meet also offered an opportunity for Coach Posillico to race his runners against new teams such as Rutgers and the U.S. Coast Guard, teams that Oneonta State would normally not have the opportunity to compete against during the season.

On the women's side of the action, sophomore Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) once again led the team finishing ninth overall and getting her second fastest six kilometer to date, a time Coach Posillico was very excited about after the race.  Her time 22:48 was the second fastest 6K ever for the women's program.

For the men, juniors John Longo (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and Chris Harvey (Kings Park/ Kings Park) led the squad finishing 15th (26:32) and 23rd (26:41) respectively.

Although the veterans on the team have been the Red Dragon's top finishers, both men and women have had remarkable performances from freshmen this season.  Most notably Brianna McLoughlin (Yonkers / School of the Holy Child) for the women, who has consistently placed in the top seven this season, and placed third in last Saturday's race.  The freshmen men who have shown well this season are Kyle Howerton (Apalachin/Vestal) and Andrew Bohunicky(Johnson City/Maine-Endwell), who both placed in Oneonta's top ten last Saturday.

Oct. 20th at Hartwick College Fast Course 5K
Men finished in 1st with 26 points
Women finished in 1st with 22 points
The Oneonta State cross country teams traveled to the other hill last Thursday to participate in the Hartwick Fast Track 5K.  The meet was originally scheduled for early September, but as a result of the heavy precipitation that hit central New York early this autumn, the meet was delayed until this week.  This meet was an opportunity for many of Oneonta's young runners to prove themselves late in the season.  This meet was the last of the cross country season for some runners, while others still have SUNYAC's, Regionals and beyond to compete.

Leading the men was freshman David Bohunicky (Johnson City / Maine-Endwell), who had an outstanding race coming in third overall with a finishing time of 16:17.  On the women's side, junior Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville/Arlington) had an explosive performance coming in first place overall with a time of 19:55.

Head Coach Angelo Posillico had this to say regarding the Hartwick meet, “It was a great opportunity for the developmental runners in our program to end their season with a team win, lots of PR's and a confidence boost.”
