Men’s Soccer (9-2-2/5-0-1 SUNYAC)

Oct. 7th vs. Potsdam, W 4-0
Oneonta State junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored twice last Friday in leading the Red Dragons to a 4-0 shutout of visiting SUNY Potsdam in SUNYAC men's soccer action. The win for Oneonta also set a program mark of 24 home games without a defeat, a streak that dates back to 2009.

The game was over early as the hosts scored twice in the first 16 minutes and four times before the first half was over.

Senior Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he got his own rebound off the cross bar before heading it to the back of the goal.  Laronde's original shot was set up by classmate Nicholas Lange (Freeville/Dryden), who crossed the ball from the right flank.

Lange also started the play for Oneonta's second goal with another crossing pass that went to Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls), who one-timed it to the foot of Fortier, who then finished the play with a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.

Fortier scored again in the 32nd minute off an assist from Laronde, who crossed a pass into the box, where Fortier was able to head the ball past the Potsdam keeper.

Oneonta's final goal of the match came seven minutes later on a direct kick by junior Dan Josepher (Manorville/Eastport South Manor).

Oct. 8th vs. Plattsburgh, W 5-0
Junior Josepher and freshman Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) each scored a pair of goals as the Oneonta State men's soccer team shut out visiting Plattsburgh 5-0 in SUNYAC action last Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Soccer Field.

The loss for Plattsburgh (9-2-2/1-2-2 SUNYAC) was its second straight in as many days.  The Cardinals began the weekend as the #12 ranked team in this past week's NSCAA coaches' poll.

Today's game didn't start as though Oneonta would defeat Plattsburgh by five goals.   Oneonta saw two near misses in the first three minutes of the match that could have put the visitors up by a pair.

The Red Dragons came back and got its first real opportunity in the eighth minute when senior Laronde broke in alone off the left flank and fired a shot that was tipped by a diving goalkeeper. As it trickled toward the goal line it was knocked out to the right flank by a defender.  The ball was then crossed back in front where Laronde got his head on it only to be stopped by the Cardinal keeper.

The first shot to find the back of the goal for Oneonta came in the 12th minute of play when junior Fortier took a shot from 25 yards out in the center of the field that found the inside of the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Oneonta added a second goal in the 30th minute when Josepher beat the keeper to a ball that came out of the back off the foot of Nicholas Gregg (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy).  Josepher was able to chip the ball with the outside of his left foot.

The Red Dragons had another opportunity in the 38th minute to go up 3-0, but the keeper made two diving stops.

After another near goal early in the second half for the visitors, Rivera notched his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute to give Oneonta a three-goal lead.  Rivera was able to dribble in traffic to free his right foot for a shot that found the right corner of the goal.  Rivera would score again nine minutes later when he collected a loose ball in the box.

Josepher capped the scoring in the 65th minute on a direct kick that he bent from the right flank.

Oct. 12th vs. Skidmore, W 2-1 (2OT)
Senior Gregg headed a service from junior Josepher on a corner kick to lift Oneonta State to a 2-1 victory over visiting Skidmore last Wednesday.  The game-winner was Gregg's first goal of the season and it came just 50 seconds into the second overtime of a hard fought battle.

The two teams battle to a scoreless first half and it wasn't until the 63rd minute that Oneonta finally broke the deadlock.  The Red Dragons were awarded a penalty kick, which senior Lange buried to give Oneonta a 1-0 lead.

Skidmore continued to battle and took advantage of Oneonta in transition when senior Diego Reinero (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) put a shot from the top of the box over Maxwell Siegelman's (Roslyn/Roslyn) hands to tie the score in the 84th minute.

Oneonta did have a decided advantage in shots in the match (19-5) and corner kicks (6-1).  Siegelman made one save in the game as he raised his record to 8-1-2 overall.

Women’s Soccer (6-5-1/4-1-1 SUNYAC)

Oct. 7th at Potsdam, W 2-0
The Oneonta State women's soccer team went on the road last Friday to defeat Potsdam 2-0.

The Red Dragons got on the board just 1:43 into play when senior Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) blasted a shot past the Bears goalkeeper off a pass from sophomore Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston). Hamm got around a defender and dribbled down the endline on the left side before dropping the ball back to DeSimone at about the penalty mark.

Oneonta continued the pressure taking thirteen shots in the first half with five on them on the goal but were unable to find the back of the net. The best opportunity for a second goal came off a Hamm corner kick that found the head of junior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches), but the ball hit the crossbar before being cleared by a Potsdam defender.

The second half was much like the first. Oneonta dominated the play and continued to pepper the goal. In the 63rd minute, the Red Dragons added an insurance goal. Sophomore Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent a driven ball in to the box from the right wing that was controlled by her sister Dana before passing it on to Amanda Regensburger (Newfield/Selden) on the left side of the goal. Regensburger buried the ball in the back of the net for goal number two of the game and her first of the season.

Oneonta outshot the Bears 30-1 and held an advantage in corner kicks, 10-0.

Senior Amy Lusby (West Babylon/North Babylon) didn't record a save in picking up her third shutout in a row.

Oct. 8th at Plattsburgh, T 1-1 (2OT)
The Oneonta State women's soccer team finished out its weekend on the road with a 0-0 tie at Plattsburgh last Saturday. The two teams battled through 120 minutes of scoreless action.

Oneonta (5-5-1/4-1-1 SUNYAC) and Plattsburgh (5-3-3/3-1-1 SUNYAC) battled throughout the entire game. The Cardinals got off to a hot start and applied high pressure for the first twenty minutes of the game. Oneonta began to gain some momentum at that point and started to pepper the Plattsburgh backline. Neither team was able to get off any quality shots off in the first half with Red Dragon keeper, Lusby registering the only save in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was played much the same way, but roles were reversed this time with Oneonta coming the aggressor early. Junior Brantmeyer had an opportunity to give Oneonta the lead early into the second half when she ran through a failed clear by a Cardinal defender and went one-on-one with the keeper, putting it just wide.

A direct kick by junior Lindsey Doxtader (Oneonta/Oneonta) found the head of K. DeSimone, who was able to put it on goal, but the goalkeeper made a great diving save to perry it wide.

Plattsburgh started to mount an attack of their own half way through the second when a midfielder played a ball through Oneonta's backline to their star forward. She made a quick chop move to her right to get around the defender, but Lusby was up the challenge as she made the save on the one-to-one to put the ball wide of the goal.

The overtimes were played just as the first ninety minutes was, with each team having one good opportunity. Plattsburgh's best opportunity came in the first overtime when their corner kick found the foot of a Cardinal, who volleyed it on goal and was saved off the line by sophomore Hamm.

Oneonta's chance came in the second overtime when Karly DeSimone headed the ball off Plattsburgh's goalkick and found her sister, Dana, but she was unable to convert the opportunity.

Lusby made four saves in the game.

The Cardinals held advantages in shots and corner kicks, 20-15 and 11-7 respectively.

The two teams went to penalty kicks to determine who would have the home field advantage if there was tie in the standings come SUNYAC tournament time. Oneonta won the penalty kick shootout 4-3.

Oct. 11th vs. Hamilton, W 2-1
Regensburger scored with three minutes left in regulation to lift Oneonta State over visiting Hamilton College last Tuesday afternoon, 2-1. Regensburger scored on a direct kick outside the 18 and hooked the ball to the top left corner of the goal.

The Continentals (6-5) scored first when their leading scorer shot directly at Oneonta's keeper Lusby and caught the loose ball to send  it into the back of the Red Dragons net.

Four minutes into the second half, K. DeSimone crossed the ball from the right corner where it rolled untouched across the box. Hamm collected the ball and shot it towards the goal, which ended up redirecting off teammate Brittany Caronti (Holbrook/Sachem North) to tie the game.

Oneonta lead Hamilton in corners (6-2) and shots (7-6). Oneonta's Lusby recorded three saves.

Field Hockey (8-5/2-2 SUNYAC)

Oct. 7th vs. Morrisville, W 6-1
Four second half goals last Saturday helped catapult the Oneonta State field hockey team to a lopsided, 6-1 win, against visiting Morrisville in SUNYAC action at All College Field.  Six different players scored for the Red Dragons, who were coming off a 4-3 overtime win versus #20 Hamilton this past Tuesday night.

Junior Suzanne Wright (Hudson/Germantown Central) got Oneonta started in the 13th minute with an unassisted goal.  Wright collected a rebound of a shot that was blocked by a Morrisville defender by classmate Megan Warning (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley).

Warning gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead with a goal 10 minutes later.  She was able to get a shot into the upper right corner after taking a pass from junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley).

After a goal by Morrisville cut Oneonta's lead in half, the Red Dragons exploded for four goals en route to putting the game away.  Freshman Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) led off at the 46 minute mark and she was followed by Morgan, senior Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury) and junior Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) for the final margin of victory.  Johnson's goal came off a penalty corner.
