Women’s Basketball (13-3/7-2)
Jan. 21st at New Paltz, L 51-63
SUNY Oneonta freshman Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac, Lakeland)scored a team high 10 points, but the Red Dragons shot only 30 percent from the floor tonight in dropping a SUNYAC contest at New Paltz 63-51 last Friday.
Oneonta held the early advantage, grabbing a six point lead at 13-7 after a three-point basket by senior Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro, Our Lady of Lourdes) at 14:35 in the first half. New Paltz countered with six unanswered to tie the game at 13 apiece with less than 10 minutes to go in the half.
Oneonta gained the lead back and built it back to six points when senior Erika Puffer (Unadilla, Unatego) scored a basket at the 4:04 mark for a 26-20 lead. The lead vanished once again as the Hawks scored six consecutive points to bring the game back to its second tie just about two minutes later. Oneonta took a 29-28 lead into halftime.
New Paltz took the lead for good at the 18:55 mark of the second half. The Hawks continued to add to its lead and had it up to as many as 13 points with 4:37 remaining. The hosts shot 43 percent for the game including 57 percent in the closing half.
Jan. 25th vs. Cortland, W 80-72
The SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team had four players in double figures as they defeated its rival Red Dragons from SUNY Cortland 80-72 in SUNYAC action last Tuesday evening in front of 1,000 fans in the Dewar Arena. Junior Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills, New York Mills)scored 18 of her team high 20 points in the second half leading Oneonta to a big second half where the team shot 55 percent from the floor and scored 49 points.
Oneonta found themselves down 38-31 early in the second half before tying the score at 39 apiece at the 17:12 mark on a three-pointer by junior Madison Slagle (Rome, Rome Catholic). Slagle scored nine points in the second half, all from behind the arc, to finish the game with 14 points.
Back-to-back three-point baskets Cortland capped a quick 8-3 spurt to give them the lead back at 47-42 at the 15:04 mark.
Oneonta seized control of the game during the next ten minutes, out scoring Cortland 25-9 to take a commanding lead of 67-56. Szkotak and seniors Puffer and Mary Kate O'Connell (Altamont, Guilderland) led the outburst that gave Oneonta the biggest lead for either team in the game.
Cortland wouldn’t go quietly as they mounted one final comeback that saw them cut the hosts’ lead to two points at 67-65 with 3:19 remaining in the game.
Oneonta regained its composure and steadily pulled away from Cortland down the stretch. Three baskets by Szkotak and four free throws by senior Bucci help secure the win, which was the first time since the 2004-05 season that Oneonta had defeated Cortland, a stretch of 11 games.
Bucci finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds. Puffer scored 10 points in the game including eight points after halftime.
Cortland jumped out quickly scoring the first seven points of the game.
Oneonta settled in after Puffer got them on the board with a pair of free throws. The hosts continued to pick away at the Cortland lead and finally tied the score 10 apiece on a three-pointer by sophomore Kate Wilverding (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney).
Oneonta made another run at its rival and, a lay-up by freshman Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport), gave Oneonta its first lead at 31-30 with 2:06 left in the opening half.
Men ‘s Basketball (6-10/5-4)
Jan. 21st at New Paltz, L 68-78
Senior Shane Gillette (Hurley, Kingston) scored 20 points to lead three players in double figures last Friday, but the SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball team fell on the road to New Paltz 78-68. Gillette made 7-of-8 free throws and had three steals in the game as well.
The game was tight through the first eight minutes of tonight’s SUNYAC contest. New Paltz led 17-16 before running off 13 unanswered points over a five minute span that increased its lead to 30-16.
New Paltz built its lead to 38-22 before Oneonta closed the opening half with seven straight points to cut the Hawks’ lead to 38-29 entering halftime.
Oneonta trailed 55-46 at the 12:17 mark of the second half, but ran off 10 unanswered points to take a 56-55 lead. Senior Brian Hooks (Cohoes, Shaker) capped the run with a three-pointer with 9:43 remaining.
New Paltz came right back and drained a three-pointer of its own to regain the lead for good. After a pair of free throws by Gillette made the score 60-58 in favor of the hosts, New Paltz opened up its lead again to 10 points with 2:13 left in the game. The Red Dragons cut the lead in half one minute later on another pair of made free throws by Gillette, but that would be its final points of the game.
Senior Troy Talbot (Brooklyn, The School for Legal Studies) and junior Terrence Parker (Queens, John Adams) joined Gillette in double figures with 15 & 10 points respectively.
Jan. 25th vs. Cortland, W 67-61
Senior Derek Hahn (Youngsville, Sullivan West) registered his sixth double-double of the season in leading host SUNY Oneonta to a 67-61 win against rival SUNY Cortland in SUNYAC action last Tuesday evening in front of over 2,000 fans that packed the Dewar Arena. Hahn scored 14 points and added a game high 15 boards as Oneonta snapped a mini three game skid to move to 6-10 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
This game appeared to be over early as Oneonta shot 56 percent in the first half en route to a commanding 43-24 lead. The host Red Dragons already had its lead to double digits by the 13-minute mark of the opening half. Senior Gillette scored 13 points in the first half to pace Oneonta. The 43 points for Oneonta was its largest output in the first half this season.
Cortland made a game of it in the second half putting together an 18-2 run to begin the second half to cut the lead to 45-42 with 12:21 left to go. Oneonta went nearly eight minutes without scoring, which allowed Cortland to chip away at the lead.
A three-point basket at the 2:12 mark gave Cortland its first lead since 3-2 in the first half at 61-60. A lay up on the ensuing possession by Hahn gave the hosts its lead back for good as Oneonta made 5-of-6 free throws over the final 1:30 for the final margin of victory.
Joining Hahn and Gillette in double figures tonight was classmate Talbot, who scored a team high 17 points.
Women’s Swimming & Diving (2-3)
Jan. 22 at Kumpf Invitational hosted by Rensselaer, 4th place with 383 points
The SUNY Oneonta women’s swimming & diving team competed last Saturday at the Kumpf Invitational hosted by Rensselaer and came away with a fourth place finish overall, scoring 383 points. SUNY Cortland was the team champion with 658 points.
Leading the women was sophomoreKristen Magliola (Shoreham, Shoreham Wading River), who won the 200-yard individual medley and was second in the 200-yard breaststroke. She clocked a time of 2:14.53 in winning the 200 IM while touching in 2:34.00 in the 200 breaststroke. She also swam the leadoff leg in the 400-yard medley relay, which placed third. Overall, Magliola scored 45 points for her team.
A quartet of freshman also had standout days for Oneonta and made a solid contribution. Rookies Melissa Erickson (Silver Spring, MD, Academy of the Holy Cross), Lindsey Molfino (Jamestown, Jamestown), Chandler Shepard (Delhi, Delaware Academy) and Alexxa Poliachik (Niagara Falls, Niagara Wheatfield) all had top eight performances in a pair of individual events for the Red Dragons.
Erickson was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:18.76) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.47). Molfino was third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.90) and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.00). Poliachik was fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.89) and eighth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:27.95). Chandler was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (57.80) and seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:08.89). Both Shepard and Poliachik swam a leg on the 400 medley relay that was third.
Wrestling (9-5-1)
Jan. 23rd at NYS Tournament, 13th place with 26.5 points
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team brought home two All-State grapplers and a 13th place finish from the New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Binghamton University this past weekend. Leading the Red Dragons was sophomore Andrew Cabibbo (Poughkeepsie, Roy C. Ketcham) and freshman Dan Graff (LaGrangeville, Arlington) as they both came away with seventh place finishes in their respective weight classes to earn All-State honors. Oneonta scored 26.5 points, which tied with NYU for the 13th place. The overall team championship went to the hosts, who scored 149.5 points.
Cabibbo was unseeded at 133 lbs. and drew the #6 seed, Dave Colagiovanni of SUNY Cortland, and lost 9-3 to drop into the consolation bracket. Cabibbo won his next match by pinfall over Lance Zemiak of Jamestown and then received a medical forfeit win to advance into the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. He then dropped a 12-9 decision to John Miller of Nassau CC before pinning Scott MacGregor of Oswego in the seventh place match.
Graff was seeded 8th at 149 lbs., but lost his opening match 9-1 to unseeded wrestler, Mac Malderelli of Nassau, which put him in the consolation bracket. Graff defeated Peyton Amato of Morrisville 9-1 to move on in the wrestlebacks. He then advanced into the quarterfinals with a medical forfeit before being pinned by Tyler Peet of Alfred, which dropped him into the seventh place match. Graff defeated Matt Spataro of Div. I Hofstra 7-5 to claim his final standing.
Jan. 26th at Ithaca, L 6-37
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team fell to the fourth-ranked Ithaca Bombers last Thursday 37-6. The Bombers scored the first 21 points of the match, winning four straight bouts, en route to the lopsided win.
Oneonta’s two wins last Thursday night came at 157 lbs. by sophomore Matt Eberlein (Levittown, Island Trees) and at 184 lbs. by seniorBrian Kramer (Hopkinton, MA, Hopkinton). Both of the wins were by decision.
Three of the first four wins by Ithaca were by nationally ranked wrestlers at 133, 141 and 149 lbs.
Women’s Track & Field
Jan. 23rd at St. Lawrence University Invitational, 4th place with 67 points
The Oneonta State track & field teams continued its improvement as multiple athletes hit SUNYAC, ECAC, and NCAA qualifying marks at the St. Lawrence University Invitational last Saturday.
Sophomore Kacy Boburka (Binghamton, Chenango Valley) who soared to new heights. On her seventh jump, Boburka cleared the high jump bar at 1.66 meters, which was good enough for a personal best, a school record, and NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Earlier in the day she placed 5th in the shot put with a heave of 10.63 meters.
Freshman Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats, Edmeston) won the triple jump with a new personal best with an ECAC qualifying mark of 10.98m.
Senior Celia Alterio (Amherst, Amherst)set an indoor personal best in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:11.27 good enough for 3rd place. Freshman Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point, Albertus Magnus) was right behind in 4th with a time of 19:12.77. Both hit the SUNYAC qualifying mark.
Junior Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill, Beacon) qualified for the SUNYAC championships in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.25 finishing in 5th place.
The women placed 4th out of ten teams scoring 67 points.
Men’s Track & Field
Jan. 23rd at St. Lawrence University Invitational, 5th place with 51 points
On the men's side, it was the upperclassmen that made their presence felt starting with seniors Sean Daly (Weedsport, Weedsport) and Tim Greenberg (Oneonta, Oneonta). Daly took a second place finish in the 500 meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:07.56. Greenberg hit a personal best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.61, qualifying him for the SUNYAC championships.
Junior Sean Wren (Delanson, Duanesburg) placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.15 qualifying him for the SUNYAC championships.
In the field events, sophomore Dustin Cox (Pulaski, Pulaski) also placed second in the high jump with an ECAC qualifying height of 1.93 meters.
The men placed 5th out of ten teams scoring 51 points.
