MIT LAST CHANCE QUALIFIER - SATURDAY, MAY 22, 2004

The Red Dragon quartet of sophomores Justin Palermo and Art Driscoll and juniors Tim Wood and Tom O'Neill won both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays with times of 42.97 and 3:20.55.  Both times were fractions of a second off the school records in each event.  O'Neill and Driscoll added 3rd and 4th place finishes, respectively, in the 200 meters with times of 22.02 and 22.24.  O'Neill's time was a personal best and missed the NCAA qualifying time by .22 seconds.  Junior Shaun Hurley placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.39 meters (43' 11 1/4").  "I am happy with the great progress of the program this year," commented Head Coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "Associate Coach Mike Schmidt has done a heck of a job with the sprinters and jumpers in a short period of time.  We'll have most of these guys back next year, which makes me excited."


ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ WILLIAMS COLLEGE - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 14-15, 2004

The Red Dragons placed 38th out of 54 teams with 7 points.  Sophomore Art Driscoll placed 3rd in the 200 meters to lead the Red Dragons.  His time of 21.84 was a new school record and missed the NCAA provisional mark by 4 hundredths of a second.  He anchored the 1600 meter relay team of senior Kwame White and juniors Tom O'Neill and Tim Wood to an 8th place finish with a school record time of 3:19.76.  O'Neill placed 9th in the 200 and 13th in the 100 meters with times of 22.17 and 11.09, respectively.  Driscoll added a 22nd place finish in the 100 with a time of 11.19.  Freshman Josh Bogdan and junior Shaun Hurley both set school records and placed 9th in the long and triple jumps, respectively.  Bogdan tied his own record with a leap of 6.61 meters (21' 8 1/5") while Hurley jumped 13.45 meters (44' 1 1/2") to break his own record.  Senior Chris Smith placed 13th in the javelin with a toss of 50.68 meters (166' 3"). 


UNIVERSITY @ ALBANY SPRING CLASSIC - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 7-8, 2004

The Red Dragons placed an impressive 3rd out of 31 teams with 48.5 points.  They were led by senior Chris Smith who won the javelin with a toss of 52.60 meters (172' 7").  Sophomore Art Driscoll and junior Tom O'Neill placed 2nd and 3rd in the 200 meters, respectively, with times of 22.24 and 22.35.  Driscoll's time improved on his ECAC qualifying performance from earlier in the year.

ONEONTA STATE MAY MEET - SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2004

The Red Dragons won the meet with 181 points, 25 points ahead of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and 69 points ahead of SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh State.

SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ CORTLAND - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, APRIL 22-23, 2004

The Red Dragons improved on their inaugural 2003 showing at outdoor SUNYAC's by placing 6th with 45 points.  They were 8th last year with 29 points.  They were led by sophomore Art Driscoll who placed 2nd in the 200 meters (22.43) and 3rd in the 400 meters (49.85).  Both times qualified him for ECAC's with the 400 time establishing a new school record.  He also anchored the 4x100 relay to a 3rd place finish (43.14) and the 4x400 relay to a 2nd place finish in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 3:20.77.  "Art stepped up big time for us this weekend," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "He is now a force to be reckon with in this conference."  Driscoll teamed with juniors Tom O'Neill and Tim Wood for both relays, as well as sophomore Justin Palermo for the 4x100 and senior Kwame White for the 4x400.  O'Neill added points for O-State by placing 6th in the 100 and 3rd in the 200 meters.  His time of 22.38 in the semifinals of the 200 set a new school record and improved his qualifying time for ECAC's.  In the javelin, senior Chris Smith took 3rd with a toss of 49.96 meters (163' 11") while junior Shaun Hurley placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.70 meters (41' 8").  In the men's hammer throw, junior Taylor Arnold launched a school record heave of 43.26 meters (141' 11") in placing 7th.

UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 2004

New SUNYAC Qualifiers:
100 meters: CAPTAIN’S CLASSIC @ CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY - SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 2004

The first meet of the break began at the Captains Classic at Christopher Newport News University in Virginia.  Opening up the day, sophomore Kyle Dresser threw a SUNYAC qualifying toss of 37.83 meters and placed 4th in the Discus.  Senior Chris Smith placed 4th in the Hammer also qualifying for SUNYACs with a throw of 32.23 meters.  On the track there were several men’s SUNYAC and ECAC qualifying times in the 100 and 200 meter events.  Sophomore Art Driscoll and junior Tom O’Neill placed 6th and 10th respectively with ECAC qualifying times of 11.00 and 11.20 seconds.  In the same event junior Tim Wood placed 13th with a time of 11.30 seconds and senior Kwame White placed 17th running 11.50 seconds, both qualifying for SUNYACs.  In the 200 meter race new SUNYAC qualifiers included O’Neill finishing 4th with a time of 23.07 seconds, and White in 11th running 23.46 seconds.

DICK SHEA OPEN @ WEST POINT - SATURDAY, MARCH 27, 2004

It was a record breaking weekend, as the Red Dragons opened up the outdoor season at West Point.  Junior Shaun Hurley won the high jump with an ECAC qualifying jump of 1.93 meters.  He also broke his own school record in the triple jump with a leap of 13.38 meters in placing 11th.  Sophomore Art Driscoll set a school record and qualified for ECAC's with a 2nd place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 11.04 seconds.  He also placed 12th in the 200 meter with a school record time of 22.97seconds.  In the field, senior Chris Smith destroyed his school record in the javelin with an ECAC qualifying toss of 54.81 meters.  This was a personal best by nearly three meters.  Sophomore Kyle Dresser and junior Taylor Arnold placed 11th and 15th, respectively, in the discus with SUNYAC qualifying throws of 37.04 meters and 35.61 meters.  Freshman Josh Bogdan set a school record in qualifying for ECAC's with a 7th place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.36 meters.  He also placed 13th in the 100 with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 11.49 seconds.

ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ BOWDOIN COLLEGE - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MARCH 5-6, 2004

The Red Dragons placed 26th out of 36 schools with 10 points.  Sophomore Art Driscoll led the way with a 3rd place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 22.88.  He joined with sophomore Scott Pollard, junior Tim Wood, and senior Kwame White to break the school record in the 4x400 meter relay.  Their time of 3:26.55 broke the record that they set last week and placed them 11th overall.  Junior Shaun Hurley placed 5th in the high jump with a leap of 1.99 meters (6' 6 1/4").  He just missed at 2.04 meters, which would have likely gotten him into the NCAA Championships next weekend.  He will now have to wait until Monday to see if his jump of 2.03 meters, from the SUNYAC Championships, will be enough to get in.  Freshman Josh Bogdan placed 13th in the long jump on Friday with a leap of 6.24 meters (20' 5 3/4").

NYU FASTRACK INVITE - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2004

The foursome of sophomores Scott Pollard and Art Driscoll, junior Tim Wood, and senior Kwame White set a new school record and qualified for ECAC's in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 2:26.63.  They placed 5th in their heat and 11th overall.  Earlier in the day, Driscoll set a new school record in the 400 meters with a time of 50.76.  He placed 2nd in his heat and 24th overall.  White and Wood placed 46th and 50th in the 400, as well, with times of 52.86 and 53.62, respectively.  In the triple jump, junior Shaun Hurley placed 11th with a jump of 12.85 meters (42' 2") while freshman Jeremy Cline placed 12th in the same event with a new PR of 12.62 meters (41' 5").  Freshman Josh Bogdan placed 24th in the long jump with a leap of 6.14 meters (20' 1 3/4").  Junior Matt Valcik placed 9th in his heat of the 800 in a time of 2:06.05.

SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ HOBART/WILLIAM SMITH - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2004

Results - Team / Individual

The Red Dragons placed 5th out of 9 schools with 47 points, improving tremendously over last year's inaugural season where they placed 9th with 14 points.  Junior Shaun Hurley led the way claiming 2 SUNYAC titles.  He started the day winning the high jump with a personal best and a NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 2.03 meters (6' 8").  He followed that with a victory in the triple jump with another personal best.  This time, he qualified for ECAC's with a jump of 13.59 meters (44' 7").  In both events, Hurley just outdistanced Buffalo State's Ken Ciolek.  In the high jump, he won by 2 inches and in the triple jump, he won by 2 centimeters.  Sophomore Art Driscoll placed 2nd in the 200 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 22.64.  He later teamed with sophomore Scott Pollard, junior Tim Wood, and senior Kwame White to place 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:27.85.  White and Wood placed 5th and 6th in the 400 with personal best times of 52.14 and 52.95, respectively.  Freshman Josh Bogdan placed 4th in the long jump with a personal best and ECAC qualifying leap of 6.70 meters (21' 11 3/4').  Junior Taylor Arnold started the day for O-State with a 6th place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 14.02 meters (46' 0").  Freshman Jeremy Cline placed 6th, as well.  He leaped 1.83 meters (6' 0") to pick up a point in the high jump.  The Distance Medley Relay team of junior Matt Valcik, sophomore Justin Palermo, freshman Rick DeCarr, and senior Dan Verdi picked up a couple crucial points in placing 5th in a school record time of 11:07.56.  "We could have been 5th or 8th in this meet," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "The guys stepped up and far exceeded our (the coaching staff's) expectations.  We could not be happier."

MIT CO-ED INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2004

Sophomore transfer Art Driscoll led the Red Dragons with a new school record and ECAC qualifying performance in the 200 meters.  Running his first individual event of the year for O-State, Driscoll won the 200 in a time of 22.74.  He also led off the victorious 1600 meter relay team consisting of sophomore Scott Pollard, junior Tim Wood, and senior Kwame White.  Earlier in the day, Pollard placed 2nd to Driscoll in the 200 with a time of 23.34, Wood placed 5th in the long jump with a leap of 5.95 meters (19' 6 1/2"), and White won the 400 in a time of 53.16.  Junior Shaun Hurley continued his rise up the performance lists with another school record and ECAC qualifying standard in the high jump.  He cleared 1.98 meters (6' 6") and placed 2nd.  He also placed 2nd in the triple jump with a jump of 13.08 meters (42' 11").  Senior Dan Verdi had a great race in the 5,000 meters, placing 4th with a time of 16:16.87.  His time qualified him for next week's SUNYAC Championships and established a new school record.  Freshman Rick Steele placed 6th in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.70, which qualified him for SUNYAC's, as well.  To round up the SUNYAC qualifiers, senior Chris Smith threw 11.77 meters (38' 7 1/2") in the weight throw, Jeremy Cline jumped 12.36 meters (40' 7") in the triple jump, and sophomore Kyle Dresser threw 12.70 meters (41' 8") in the shot put and established yet another school record.  Junior Matt Valcik won the 800 meters in a time of 2:04.24.

COLGATE UNIVERSITY CLASS OF '32 INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2004

Junior Shaun Hurley jumped his way to the victory in the high jump and in the process qualified for the ECAC Championships with a clearance of 1.94 meters (6' 4 1/2").  He also placed 3rd in the triple jump with a mark of 12.69 meters (41' 7 3/4").  Classmate Taylor Arnold had a huge day in the weight throw, tossing the 35 pound implement 14.40 meters (47' 3") and placing 4th.  He broke his own school record by 7 feet.  Senior Kwame White and sophomore Scott Pollard qualified for SUNYAC's in the 400 meters while placing 5th and 8th, respectively, with times of 52.28 and 52.83.  The duo joined forces with junior Lou Mazzarisi and sophomore transfer Art Driscoll to place 5th in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:27.31.  Senior Dan Verdi started the day off for the Red Dragons by placing 7th in the 5,000 meters with a new school record time of 16:39.50.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL II - SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 2004

Junior Tom O'Neill continued his acceleration into the O-State record books with a victory in the 200 meters.  O'Neill ran 23.41 to break teammate Lou Mazzarisi's record.  Mazzarisi finished 5th in the event with a season's best time and SUNYAC qualifying time of 23.56.  Earlier in the day, O'Neill placed 6th in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.77.  The duo ended the day joining with Tim Wood and Scott Pollard to place 3rd in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:32.35.  Freshman Josh Bogdan started the day off for the Red Dragons with a 2nd place finish in the long jump with a SUNYAC mark of 6.40 meters (21' 0").

ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY INDOOR CLASSIC - SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 2004

The Red Dragons placed 5th with 36.5 points at the Saints Indoor Classic.  They were led by junior Shaun Hurley who placed 2nd in the high jump with a leap of 1.92 meters (6' 3 1/2") and tied for 3rd in the triple jump with a jump of 12.77 meters (41' 10 3/4").  Junior transfer Tom O'Neill helped out immediately for O-State.  He placed 4th in both the 55 and 200 meter dashes with SUNYAC qualifying times of 6.75 and 23.63, respectively.  Junior Lou Mazzarisi hit the SUNYAC standard in the 55, as well, running 6.85.  The Red Dragons got some help in the long jump as freshman Josh Bogdan jumped into SUNYAC's with a 5th place jump of 6.14 meters (20' 1 3/4").  He was joined by junior Tim Wood who leaped 6.10 meters (20' 1/4") good for 6th place and a SUNYAC qualification.

ARMORY COLLEGIATE OPEN - FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 2004

Junior Shaun Hurley led the Red Dragons into 2004 with two 5th place finishes at the New York Armory.  He leaped 1.93 meters in the high jump and followed with a triple jump of 13.20 meters.  Both efforts currently lead the SUNYAC and broke his own school records.  Senior Kwame White and junior Lou Mazzarisi also qualified for SUNYAC's.  Both men earned their trips in the 200 meters with White running :23.55 and Mazzarisi running :23.67.

ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY RELAYS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2003

Freshman Ryan Schaible led a group of classmates in closing out the fall semester on a high note by qualifying for SUNYAC's in 2 events.  He placed 3rd in the long jump with a leap of 6.19 meters (20' 3 3/4") and 4th in the triple jump with a jump of 12.49 meters (40' 11 3/4").  In the 55 meter hurdles, Austin Walker ran a time of :08.36 in the semifinals and Kyle Northrop ran :08.48 in the finals, both good for SUNYAC qualification.  The duo joined sophomore Justin Palermo and senior Kwame White in placing 3rd in the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:37.36.  Freshman Jeremy Cline placed 3rd in the high jump and booked his trip to SUNYAC's with a leap of 1.85 meters (6' 3/4").  Junior Tim Wood ran :06.82 in the semi finals of 55 meters to qualify in that event.  In the throws, sophomore Kyle Dresser and junior Taylor Arnold set new school records in the shot put and weight throw, respectively with throws of
12.46 meters (40’ 10 1/2") and 12.39 meters (40’ 7 3/4").  The Red Dragons return to competition on Friday, January 16th at the New York Armory.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY RELAYS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2003

The Red Dragons opened the 2003-2004 season at the Cornell University Relays.  Freshman Josh Jenkins immediately announced his presence in placing 2nd in the 60 meters with a SUNYAC and ECAC qualifying time of :06.97.  He just missed the NCAA provisional time by 1 hundredth of a second.  Joining him in the 60 qualifying and setting personal bests were juniors Lou Mazzarisi (13th - :07.28) and Tim Wood (27th - :07.44).  The pair later teamed with senior Kwame White and freshman Alex Randall in placing 4th in the 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:32.12.  Junior Shaun Hurley jumped his way to SUNYAC's in two events.  He first placed 9th in the high jump with a leap of 1.91 meters (6' 3 1/4") and then followed with a 12.94 meter (42' 5 1/2") triple jump which placed him 10th.  Sophomore Kyle Dresser had big day in the shot put.  He threw a personal best of 12.22 meters (40' 1 1/4") in placing 15th.  Freshmen Kyle Northrop and Ryan Schaible got in the qualifying act in the 60 meter high hurdles and triple jump, respectively.  Northrop placed 12th in a time of :09.25 and Schaible placed 12th with a leap of 12.81 meters (42' 1/2").
