Field Hockey (11-7/2-4 SUNYAC)
Oct. 30th vs. Juniata, W 2-1 (OT)
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team closed its 2010 regular season in grand style last Saturday as they upset No. 17 Juniata 2-1 in overtime. The Red Dragons finish the regular season with an 11-7 record, which is its first winning season since 2005 when the team finished 11-9. Oneonta has declared itself eligible for the ECAC Mid Atlantic tournament. The tournament field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 10.
The hero today for Oneonta was sophomore
Megan Warning as she collected a loose ball inside the circle and shot back across her body and beat the Juniata goalie to end the game in the fourth minute of the first overtime.
The Red Dragons were out shot, 11-8, and out cornered, 13-8, but got another solid defensive effort anchored by senior goalie
Leslie Dauphinais. Dauphinais kicked aside six shots this afternoon to pick up her eleventh win of the season.
The two teams played to a scoreless opening half, although the Red Dragons did have a point blank shot just as the horn sounded to end the first half.
Juniata scored the game’s first goal to take the lead in the 44th minute.
The Eagles’ lead did not last long as Oneonta took advantage of a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Freshman
Stephanie Fiske took a pass from outside the circle by junior
Jacqueline Camp and banged a tough angle shot past the Juniata goalie to tie the score.
Juniata had one last opportunity when they were awarded a penalty corner as time expired. The Oneonta defense thwarted the attempt and the two teams went to overtime.
Volleyball (18-18/5-3 SUNYAC)
Oct 19th vs. Hartwick, W 3-0
The SUNY Oneonta women’s volleyball team defeated its neighbor from across the hill, Hartwick College, last Friday in what was billed as the Presidents Match, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-13). The two college Presidents, Dr. Drugovich of Hartwick and Dr. Kleniewski of Oneonta participated in the opening coin flip to begin tonight’s match.
The first two sets were closely contested with the biggest lead for either team being four points achieved three times by Oneonta. The Red Dragons trailed only four times in tonight’s match, once in each set and twice in the second set. In the third set, Oneonta led 9-7 before pulling away with 10 of the next 13 points to lead 19-10. The Red Dragons cruised from that point winning 25-13.
Oneonta was led in the match by sophomore
Kacy Boburka, who had 12 kills. She also had six digs and two blocks. Senior
Kelsey Klopfer had 15 assists and nine digs. Classmate
Megan Boeltz had a team high five blocks to go with five kills.
Oct. 30th vs. CCNY, W 3-0 & vs. Sage, W 3-0
The SUNY Oneonta women’s volleyball team swept through CCNY and Sage College last Saturday in the Dig Pink Extravaganza Tournament. The Red Dragons won both matches easily as they ended its regular season on a five-match win streak.
In the opening match of the day versus CCNY, senior Boeltz led the attack with 11 kills. Freshman
Kylie Lambert fueled the attack with a team best 16 assists. Junior
Jessica Zerega led the defense with 23 digs.
In the match against Sage, Boeltz once again led the Oneonta attack with eight kills. Classmate Klopfer had 18 assists to lead the Red Dragons. Zerega had 14 digs to lead the defense while freshman
Andrea Gorgen added 13 digs.
Nov. 4th vs. Geneseo, L 0-3 (SUNYAC Tournament)
The SUNY Oneonta women’s volleyball team dropped their first round match of the SUNYAC Tournament last Thursday to Geneseo, 3-0, to end their season with a record of 18-18.
In the first set of the match, the two teams battled back and forth before the Blue Knights took the lead 24-17 and looked to be on the verge of victory. The Red Dragons rallied back to tie the score at 24-all, but two errors by Oneonta gave Geneseo the first-set victory.
Geneseo built an early lead in the second match, but Oneonta battled back once again. The Dragons found themselves down by as many as six points, but came back to tie the score at 13-aside. The teams traded points until Geneseo ran away with five consecutive points to end the match.
The Blue Knights took a 15-5 advantage to start the third set and Oneonta put a small rally together, but fell short as the Blue Knights completed the sweep.
The Red Dragons were led by Boburka, who had a team high 10 kills and added 14 digs. Zerega led the team with 21 digs, and Klopfer had 17 assists.
Women’s Cross Country
Oct. 30th at SUNYAC Championships
The women placed 4th with 103 points last Saturday. Junior
Lauren Brunetto took 5th place with a time of 23:09 for the 6k race. This is the highest place individual since Kaitlin O’Sullivan placed 3rd in 2006. Being a top five finisher Brunetto will also be inducted into the SUNYAC hall of fame and will also earn first team all conference honors. She is the second woman in the programs history to earn the honors.
Rounding out the top five for the women was senior
Celia Alterio placing 23rd, her highest finish since 2007 with a time of 23:52.

Pam Ernst stepped up and had a big day filling in the third spot placing 29th overall. Sophomore

Danielle Kennedy crossed the line in 30th and 34th respectively.
Men’s Cross Country
Oct. 30th at SUNYAC Championships
The men placed 6th with 148 points last Saturday. Oneonta Native and sophomore
Nick Madison placed 14th overall earning second team all conference honors running a time of 26:28 on the 8k course.
Behind Madison was consistent No. 2 runner
John Longo in 32nd with a time of 27:20 and senior
David Goodge in 33rd with a time of 27:21. Senior

Mitchell Todorov rounded out the top five in 39th and 51st respectively.
Women’s Swimming & Diving (1-0/1-0)
Oct. 30th vs. Oswego, W 124-115
The women’s swimming & diving team set out to improve from last years dual-meet versus SUNY Oswego. Last Saturday was a complete turn-around for the Red Dragons as they defeated the Lakers 124 – 115. This is Coach Chris Schuler-Ghiorse’s first time defeating Oswego in her 14 years as the Red Dragon’s coach.
They started off the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and never looked back. The women went on to win 8 out of 13 events on the day including sophomore
Kristen Magliola's win in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:17.17. Magliola’s time broke the pool record previously held by Danielle Ulanowski who graduated in 2008.
Later on in the day she went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke by one-hundredth of a second scoring a total of 18 points for the team.
Freshman newcomer
Alexxa Poliachik started her career as a Red Dragon with a win in the 50-yard freestyle over teammate
Chandler Shepard. She followed that up with a win in the 100-yard butterfly over a second and a half faster than the field.
Shepard came back and took her own event, winning the 100-yard freestyle to help the team to the victory.
Men’s Swimming & Diving (1-0/1-0)
Oct. 30th vs. Oswego, W 153-86
The men’s swimming & diving team set out to improve from last year’s dual-meet versus SUNY Oswego. Last Saturday was a complete turn-around for the Red Dragons as they defeated the Lakers 153-86. Ryan Walsh's victory in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 53.79. Walsh broke a school record, which has held since 1974.
Earlier in the day he had wins in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM scoring a total 27 points for the team.
Sophomore standout
Alex Miller was back to top form defeating the field in the 1000-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 500-yard freestyle.
The Diving of freshman
Jermaine Miller added to the teams score by winning both sessions of diving scoring a total of 18 points.
