Women’s Soccer (17-5-2)
Nov. 20th at William Smith, L 1-2 (NCAA Sweet 16)
The #13 SUNY Oneonta women’s soccer team had its NCAA run halted last Saturday as ninth-ranked William Smith edged them 2-1 in the third round of the NCAA tournament.
The game was scoreless until the 38th minute, when a William Smith player shot a ball that was deflected and saved by Oneonta’s junior keeper
Amy Lusby, but she could not hang on to the ball. A Heron was there to tap in the rebound to put William Smith up 1-0.
William Smith went up 2-0 in the 62nd minute when a long ball was sent into the box and was flicked on by the Heron’s leading scorer to a wide open Heron who tucked it into the back of the goal.
Oneonta got on the scoreboard in the 83rd minute, when first-year player,
Melissa Guglielmo, found the back of the net after a nice give and go pass from senior
Nha Wright. It was Guglielmo’s third goal of the season.
The Herons held a 20-12 advantage in shots and 14-6 on goal. The Herons took six corner kicks, while Oneonta recorded three. Lusby registered 12 saves for the Red Dragons.
Women’s Basketball (2-0/0-0 SUNYAC)

Nov. 20th vs. St. John Fisher, W, 82-75 (2OT) at the Skidmore Invitational
The SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball won its opening games of the season this past weekend at the Skidmore Invitational including a thrilling 82-75 double overtime victory against St. John Fisher. The Red Dragons opened the tournament with a 57-50 win last Friday night against Skidmore.
In the first game, Oneonta’s
Gabi Regan hit a three-pointer with two seconds to play in regulation to tie the game 61-61.
In the first overtime, St. John Fisher forced a second OT with a lay-up with 16 seconds to play.
The Red Dragons dominated the second extra session, outscoring Fisher 15-8. Ten of Oneonta’s 15 points came from the free throw line, with
Madison Slagle mixing in a key three-pointer.
Slagle finished with 20 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team along with teammate
Samantha Szkotak who scored 18 points.
In the game, neither team had more than a six point lead at any point in the contest. Oneonta had two, four point leads, one early in the first half and its second midway through the second half. St. John Fisher held its only six point lead at 44-38 at the 12:38 mark of the second half.
In its win against Skidmore, Oneonta built its 28-24 halftime lead to 14 points at the 14:43 mark of the second half before the Thoroughbreds made a run to cut the Red Dragons’ lead to four points with 10:39 remaining.
A layup by Skidmore knotted the contest at 45 apiece with 6:34 to go in the game. Six unanswered points by Oneonta including two baskets by senior
Mary Kate O'Connell gave Oneonta the lead for good. O’Connell finished the game with 10 points.
Szkotak led Oneonta with 14 points to go with 10 rebounds. Senior
Rebecca Bucci added eight points and a game high 12 rebounds helping Oneonta to a 55-44 edge on the boards.
Men’s Basketball (0-3/0-0 SUNYAC)
Nov. 19th vs. Nazareth, L 51-65 at Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament
Nov. 20th vs. Messiah, L 48-56 at Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament
The Oneonta State men’s basketball team started the 2010-2011 at the Pizza Hut Tip-off tournament this past weekend hosted by Dickinson College and dropped a pair of games. They fell in its opener to Nazareth 65-51 last Friday night and then lost to Messiah in the consolation game of the tournament 56-48.
In the Nazareth game, the game was tied at 13 apiece before a 16-5 run late in the first half by the Golden Flyers opened up enough breathing room. Senior
Troy Talbot led Oneonta with 20 points while classmate
Derek Hahn added 14 points and 14 boards.
The Red Dragons struggled from long distance, going 0-11 from behind the arc. Oneonta did outrebound Nazareth 41-39 including a 21-12 advantage off the offensive glass.
Against Messiah, Oneonta fell behind early before making a late first half run to trail only 33-24. The Red Dragons got as close as three points five times in the second half, the last time coming at 50-47 with 1:41 remaining.
Senior
Brian Hooks led Oneonta with 12 points while classmate
Ryan Dare added 11 points off the bench. Hahn recorded double digits in rebounds for the second straight game as he grabbed a team high 12 boards to go along with six points.
Nov. 22nd at Utica, L 72-80
SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball dropped their third game of the season at Utica College last Monday night, 72-80. The Red Dragons had the lead at halftime, 40-35, but were unable to keep the momentum to start the second half.
Oneonta got out to an early lead in the first half 10-3 with baskets by Hahn and Hooks, but Utica would slowly crawl back to within 4 points. With six minutes left in the half, the Red Dragons would go ahead by 12, but once again Utica was able to close the deficit and go into halftime down 5 points. Oneonta shot 45.5% from the field in the first half.
In the second half, the Pioneers were able to tie the game in the sixteenth minute and eventually take the lead for good with ten minutes to play in the second half. Oneonta continued to battle the entire game, keeping the score within reach, but just could not regain the momentum they had in the first half.
Leading the way for Oneonta was senior Hooks with 20 points, 15 of them from three-pointers. Classmates Hahn and Talbot added 15 points and 13 points, respectively, while each grabbing 8 rebounds. Talbot also dished out 7 assists on the evening.
Women’s Swimming & Diving (1-2/1-1)
Nov. 20th at North Country Invitational, 1st – 511.5 points
The SUNY Oneonta swimming & diving teams put together a solid team effort to take the team titles at the North Country Invitational hosted by SUNY Potsdam this past weekend. The women won its side by nearly 50 points in accumulating 511.5 points outdistancing the hosts, who scored 465 points.
Oneonta had four single event winners led by senior
Jamie Milchanowski, who won the 1-meter diving while taking second place in the 3-meter diving event.
The freshman duo of
Melissa Erickson and
Alexxa Poliachik were victorious in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly events respectively.
The final event winner for the Red Dragons was junior
Jacqueline Haight who won the 200-yard breaststroke.
Men’s Swimming & Diving (1-2/1-1)
Nov. 20th at North Country Invitational, 1st – 450 points
The SUNY Oneonta swimming & diving teams put together a solid team effort to take the team titles at the North Country Invitational hosted by SUNY Potsdam this past weekend. The men scored 450 points to win the title on its side, 40 points ahead of Potsdam, who finished with 410 points.
Oneonta native
Alex Miller led the Red Dragon men with three individual victories this weekend. Miller won the 200 and 400-yard IM and the 200-yard backstroke.
Freshmen
Jermaine Miller and
Ryan Walsh each took home a pair of wins for Oneonta during the event. Miller won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events while Walsh won both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events.
Wrestling (3-2)
Nov. 20th at Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational – 2nd place, 112.5 points
Oneonta State was host to 10 teams for the 2010 Red Dragon Invitational. Senior
James Lamonica and sophomore
Matt Eberlein placed second in their respective weight classes to lead the Red Dragons to a second place finish with 112.5 points. Johns Hopkins claimed the team title with 134 points.
Lamonica made the final bout of the day an exciting one going toe to toe with Corey James of Cortland going into three overtimes for the decision. He was able to hold the lead till the third overtime where James was able to come from behind with the victory. Lamonica got to the championship match after winning his first three bouts by decision 8-3, 5-3, and 4-2.
Eberlein received a first round bye and then won the following three bouts major decision 12-4, decision 6-4, and decision 3-1 to advance to the championship match. In the championship match he fell by decision 4-2 to John Cataldo of SUNY Cortland.
