Women’s Soccer (10-3-1/5-1-1 SUNYAC)
Oct. 8th vs. Plattsburgh, W 3-2 (2OT)
SUNY Oneonta freshman,
Sarah Bobroff picked a good time to score her first two collegiate goals. The rookie notched a pair last Friday including the game-winner in the second overtime to lift the Red Dragons to a 3-2 win against visiting Plattsburgh in SUNYAC action. The win for Oneonta puts them into first place ahead of the Cardinals who dropped its first conference game of the year.
Bobroff’s winning goal came right at the 104 minute mark with an assist from classmate
Amanda Regensburger who sent a ball into the box from the left flank. Bobroff finished off the play with a shot to the far post that found the inside of the goal.
Regensburger also assisted on Bobroff’s first goal of the game in the 56th minute that tied the score at 1-1. Regensburger was able to pass the ball to Bobroff inside the box where she fired a shot that deflected off the inside of the left post and into the back of the goal.
The two teams battled tightly in the first half of play with the shots being 5-4 in favor of Oneonta at the end of 45 minutes. The only problem was that one of Plattsburgh’s shots found the back of the goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Out of halftime, the Red Dragons turned up the attack and began an assault on the Plattsburgh defense that resulted in some early opportunities to tie the score. After Bobroff’s tying goal, less than two minutes later, the Red Dragons struck again to take a 2-1 lead.
Senior
Nha Wright sent the ball across the goal on a corner kick that freshman
Melissa Guglielmo got her head on to get the ball out in front of the goal. From there, freshman
Karly DeSimone collected the loose ball and shot it by the Plattsburgh keeper.
The Cardinals didn’t go quietly as they came back to tie the score in the 68th minute.
Oct. 9th vs. Potsdam, W 8-0
SUNY Oneonta senior captain Wright had a hat-trick, scoring three for the Red Dragons as they defeated Potsdam 8-0 in conference action last Saturday.
It was senior day for the Red Dragons, as team captains and seniors Wright,
Caitlin Burke and
Erin Boyle were honored before the game. They are all SUNYAC Champions, and have participated in the NCAA tournament multiple times.
Oneonta dominated the game and the first half as Wright set the tone for the Red Dragons scoring in the 5th minute of play off a pass from freshman
Kori Hamm. Five minutes later junior
Dana DeSimone headed the ball into the back of the net after a pass from freshman Regensburger putting the Red Dragons up 2-0.
In the 12th minute of play Regensburger set herself up again to pass the ball to Wright who headed it into the goal, identical to DeSimone’s shot two minutes earlier.
Later in the half, freshman K. DeSimone got into the action scoring in the 20th minute off a deflected pass and her sister Dana scored for a second time in the 22nd minute. After the keeper blocked her first shot, she regained possession and bounced into the net putting Oneonta up 5-0 in the first half.
Wright and Hamm teamed up again in the second half when Hamm passed the ball where Wright was in position and redirected the ball into the net in the 47th minute.
Kayla Brantmeyer and
Carly Rosen both scored in the second half to help the team put away the Bears 8-0.
Oneonta out scored Potsdam 27-1 and keepers

Marena Vigilante split time in goal for the Red Dragons.
Oct. 13th vs. Hartwick, W 5-1
For a second straight year the Red Dragons claimed city pride by defeating cross-town rivals Hartwick, 5-1.
The game started off with Hartwick coming out fast. In the 4th minute of play, the Hawks earned a free kick about 25 yards out that they played quickly and were able to capitalize on.
Once Oneonta felt the pressure they never looked back. The physical play of Brantmeyer paid off in the 10th minute of play when she dribbled up the middle right past the defense to tie the game 1-1.
In the 19th minute of play D. DeSimone scored her 10th goal of the season. Regensburger was able to pass the ball from the left wing to DeSimone who chipped it up and over the keeper to put Oneonta ahead 2-1 at the half.
The second half was all Oneonta and it all started with a corner kick by Wright. In the 51st minute of play, K. DeSimone was able to finish off the corner on a volley.
Five minutes later, Brantmeyer was back in action scoring after D. DeSimone dribbled the ball down the end line and laid it back to Brantmeyer who lasered the ball past the keeper to put the Red Dragons up 4-1.
With 10 seconds left to play, freshman Rosen was able to sneak past the Hawks defense to get one final goal for the Red Dragons to close the game out 5-1.
Oneonta out shot the Hawks 23-7 and had four more corners in the game.
Men’s Soccer (9-3-2/5-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 8th at Plattsburgh, L 0-4
SUNY Oneonta men’s soccer dropped their second SUNYAC game of the season on the road last Friday to Plattsburgh, 4-0, who currently sits second in the SUNYAC standings behind the Red Dragons, but have a game in hand.
The Cardinals dominated the play as they put six shots on goal and scoring four of those six shots. The Red Dragons could not muster much of an attack on the gusty afternoon.
Oct. 9th at Potsdam, W 2-1
The SUNY Oneonta men’s soccer team got two goals from sophomore
Dan Josepher last Saturday to defeat SUNY Potsdam 2-1 in SUNYAC action on the road. The Red Dragons rebounded from its defeat on Friday at Plattsburgh by the score of 4-0.
SUNY Potsdam jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match on a goal in the sixth minute. The goal came off a scramble in front of the goal where a Bear came away with the loose ball before putting into the back of the goal.
Oneonta, which held a decisive advantage in shots in the opening half, finally converted an opportunity in the final minute of the half to tie the score at 1-1. Josepher was able to get his head on a ball that was passed in close by classmate
Jeff Christian.
Josepher’s game-winner came in the 76th minute of play off a rebound on a save by the Potsdam keeper. Freshman
Addison Straub took the initial shot that was not controlled, which allowed Josepher to take advantage of the loose ball.
Sophomore
Maxwell Siegelman made three saves in the game to record the win for the Red Dragons.
Oct. 13th at Skidmore, W 1-0
The Oneonta men’s soccer team won a hard fought game, 1-0 at Skidmore last Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field.
Junior
Jonathan Kowalski scored the game’s lone goal at the 56:02 mark after sophomore Christian beat the defender along the baseline and sent a pass through the box to set up Kowalski for his fourth goal of the season and eventual game-winner.
Skidmore’s best scoring opportunity came just minutes before Oneonta’s goal when a thoroughbred blasted a shot from the top of the box that was saved and a header from in the box went just high of the crossbar.
The Thoroughbreds had another chance in the 90th minute as a there was a 1-on-1 opportunity with the keeper but Skidmore was called for offsides.
For the Red Dragons,
Giancarlo Colasanti made the start, stopping two shots in the first half and Siegelman made three saves in the second half to earn the win.
Both teams recorded 12 shots and were also even on corners at two apiece.
Field Hockey (8-5/1-3 SUNYAC)
Oct. 8th at Morrisville, L 1-2
Oneonta dropped a SUNYAC game at Morrisville last Saturday 2-1 on a blustery and sunny afternoon.
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead into halftime, scoring their first goal just a little over one minute into the game. Their second goal came with only 2 minutes left in the first half.
The Red Dragons were able to pull a goal back 10 minutes into the second half off a goal by junior
Andrea Van Dyke, assisted by
Ainsley Stoll off a penalty corner. The goal was Van Dyke’s first of the season. Oneonta continued to push but was unable to capitalize on their chances.
Oneonta outshot Morrisville 24-12 and had more penalty corners, 22-7, but fell short.
Senior goalkeeper,
Leslie Dauphinais made six saves on the day.
Oct. 12th vs. Scranton, W 4-2
Senior Stoll was at it again scoring her 15th and 16th goals of the season as the Red Dragons rolled past Scranton 4-2 last Tuesday.
The tag team of Stoll and senior
Rachel Taylor put the Red Dragons on the board in the 6th minute of the game. After being awarded a penalty Taylor took the corner, passed it in play to Stoll, where she winded up and slammed it into the goal putting Oneonta up 1-0.
In the 31st minute Stoll had a great opportunity but Scranton goalie was able to make a sliding kick save to stop the ball.
In the 34th minute of play Taylor decided to take it upon herself to score for the Red Dragons as she dribbled up the middle past defenders and past the goalie.
Scranton went on the board 15 seconds later to end the first half; Oneonta 2, Scranton 1.
In the second half Stoll received the ball off a penalty corner and shot just wide of the goal where sophomore
Megan Warning redirected the ball into the corner of the goal in the 38th minute of play.
Stoll and Taylor scored again in the second half identical to their first half goal. In the 41st minute Taylor pass the ball into play to Stoll of a penalty corner where Stoll shot it past defenders into the net to score the final goal for the Red Dragons.
Volleyball (11-15/2-2 SUNYAC)
Oct 8th & 9th at Union Interleague Challenge
The SUNY Oneonta women’s volleyball team competed this past weekend at the Union College Interleague Challenge and came away with an even 2-2 record. The highlight of the two-day event was a sweep of Ithaca College on Saturday, which was the first victory over the Bombers during head coach, Colleen Cashman’s 12-year tenure at Oneonta.
In the match against Ithaca, Oneonta was able to avenge a defeat at the hands of the Bombers earlier this season. Oddly enough, the Red Dragons won’t play until Tuesday, Oct. 19 when they face the Bombers.
Sophomores
Kacy Boburka and
Brittany Calvello led the attack with 12 kills and 10 kills respectively against the Bombers. Calvello also contributed 15 assists and five digs. Boburka had five digs and a pair of blocks.
The Red Dragons’ other win in the tournament came on Friday evening when they outlasted Lasell College 3-2. Oneonta trailed two sets to one before rallying to force the fifth set, which they won 15-12.

Andrea Gorgen who had 13 kills, eight digs and five aces. Classmate
Kylie Lambert fueled Oneonta’s attack with 25 assists.
Men’s Cross Country
Oct. 8th at Rensselaer Invitational, 2nd place – 39 points
SUNY Oneonta sophomore and Oneonta native,
Nick Madison, continued his strong season last Friday afternoon in taking the top spot in the Rensselaer Invitational held at Saratoga State Park in Saratoga, N.Y. Madison covered the 5K course in 15:36 in leading the men to a second place team finish. Host Rensselaer won the event with 22 points, 17 points ahead of the Red Dragons, who finished with 39.
Oneonta’s next finisher was sophomore
John Longo, who came in 5th place with a time of 15:45. The Red Dragons next six finishers were in succession starting at 13th place and continuing through 18th place.
Women’s Cross Country
Oct. 8th at Rensselaer Invitational, 1st place – 24 points
The SUNY Oneonta women’s cross country team won the 2010 Saratoga Invitational hosted by Rensselaer today, scoring 24 points, seven points ahead of the hosts. Junior

Celia Alterio led the way for Oneonta, finishing 1-2 with times of 18:50 and 19:03 respectively over the 5K course.

Women’s Tennis
Oct. 8th – 10th at SUNYAC Tournament, 3rd place – 18 points
The SUNY Oneonta women’s tennis team completed competition in the three-day SUNYAC Tournament on last Sunday and came away tied for third place overall with 18 points. New Paltz scored 42 points to win the conference championship and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Div. III tournament next spring. Geneseo was second with 36 points. Oneonta finished deadlocked with Cortland.
The Red Dragons were led during the tournament by
Carly Smith,
Danielle Browarski and
Emily Shannon. Smith was a finalist at third singles while Browarski and Shannon teamed together and advanced to the championship match at first doubles. It was the third straight year that Shannon was a finalist in doubles play having won a SUNYAC title two years ago.
Browarski and Shannon’s run to the final match began with a straight set win against Rachel Hodnett and Jessica Paquette of Plattsburgh, 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals, they disposed of the No. 2 seeds from Cortland, Stephanie DiCapua and Alyssa Tretter in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the championship match, they were defeated by the top-seeded tandem of New Paltz, Lindsey Garyn and Stephanie Schara of New Paltz, 4-6, 4-6.
Smith started with an easy straight set win against Kristen Casse of Plattsburgh, 6-0, 6-2. She then knocked off Tretter of Cortland, the top seed, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Garyn of New Paltz ended Smith’s run in the title match with a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-1.
