Seven Red Dragons Hit the Net in Women’s Soccer’s 7-0 SUNYAC Opening Win Versus Canton

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's soccer team controlled their SUNYAC opener for the full 90 minutes and defeated Canton, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon at Red Dragon Field. Seven different Red Dragons scored in the game as sophomore Violet Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) recorded a goal with three assists, while senior Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and junior Devyn Kelly (Wappingers Falls, NY/Beacon) each scored a goal and an assist. Kelly's goal was her first with the team. Both sophomore Eleni Schattman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and freshman Grace Bancheri (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central) scored their first career goals as the win improved the Red Dragons record to 4-3-1 this season, 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC, and the Roos dropped to 1-7-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

"Very happy with the variety in our attack today," said Head Coach Mara Primmer. "It was a great team effort and quality minutes for lots of players to use down the line."

Oneonta got the board quick in the ninth minute of play off the leg of junior Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur). After Mattoni had her first shot blocked, she had another shot that hit the post and bounced back into an open area in front of the goal where Kealey came sprinting in and booted the ball in for her first goal of the season.

Mattoni gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute when she battled off a Roo defender and fired a worm burner from the penalty spot into the right side of the net. The goal was Mattoni's first of the season.

Kelly made it 3-nil with her first career goal with Oneonta in the 19th minute. The Red Dragon junior received the ball from freshman Lily Martin (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) and fired a shot from 30 yards out that sailed over the head of Canton's keeper and in the net.

Schattman scored her first collegiate goal in the 21st minute to make it a four-goal game. She received a long lead pass from Kelly, gave the ball one touch, then ripped a low shot from 16 yards out into the far post side of the net.

Bancheri followed Schattman shortly after and recorded her first career goal in the 25th minute for Oneonta to take a 5-0 lead into halftime. Schattman had the ball on the side of the penalty box and centered it to junior Marlie Watson (Wappingers Falls, NY/John Jay), who had her shot blocked. The ball bounced to Parente for a shot that was saved, but the keeper could not hold on to the ball, and Bancheri sprinted in for the rebound shot in front of the right side of the net and scored.

Sophomore Bella Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) netted Oneonta's first goal of the second half in the 76th minute. Senior Lisa Schinckel (Sydney, Australia/Hornsby Girls School) sent a lead pass to V. Mattoni and, while a defender closed in on her, she passed it into the box. Unguarded, B. Mattoni gathered the ball, brought it within eight yards then lasered a shot into the far side post for the goal. The score was B. Mattoni's third of the season, which leads the team.

Parente recorded the final goal of the game with her first of the season in the 81st minute. Canton's goalkeeper was called for a dangerous play and set up an Oneonta indirect kick from seven yards out, near the left corner of the goal area. With all 11 Roos lined up in net, V. Mattoni stepped on the ball and ran away for Parente's shot that went over the charging defenders and into the near side of the net.

Junior Emily Hardison (Coram, NY/Longwood) started the first 29:26 in net for Oneonta, while freshman Makenzi Hansen (Ridge, NY/Longwood) played the final 60:34. Neither faced a shot attempt.

Canton's Nicole Morrow ended the game with nine saves.

The Red Dragons outshot the Roos 39-0 in total shots, 16-0 shots on net, and they finished with an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta returns to Red Dragon Field on Saturday, October 3, to take on Plattsburgh in SUNYAC play at 3 pm.
