Puerta was a four-year impact player for the lacrosse team from 1999-2002. During his tremendous career, he ammassed 275 points, which is second all-time at the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame. His 160 career goals is still first while his 115 career assists is currently second most all-time. His career was highlighted with his selection as a USILA Third Team All-American at the conclusion of his final season in 2002.

During his record-setting senior season, Puerta set season marks at the time for points (95) and assists (43), which were just surpassed last spring by current star Jamie O'Neil. In 2002, Puerta led the Red Dragons into the ECAC Championship game and was selected as an ECAC All-Star. He was also selected to the All-SUNYAC First Team for a second time and played in the USILA North/South All-Star game.

After graduating from Oneonta in 2003 with a degree in Elementary Education, Puerta then received a master's degree in Early Language and Literacy in 2006. Puerta has spent 22 years as a 6
th grade teacher in the North Bellmore School District. He also coached boys lacrosse from 2017-23 in the Bellmore-Merrick School District.
Puerta, along with eight other individuals will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 6 at 11am in the Morris Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.
