ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team dropped both ends of a SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz on Tuesday, falling 11-1 in the opener and 10-3 in game two at Red Dragon Field. The Red Dragons fall to 13-13 overall and 3-5 in the SUNYAC, while the Hawks move to 12-9 and 4-3 in the conference.
Game 1: New Paltz 11, Oneonta 1
The first game remained scoreless through four innings before New Paltz broke things open with a four-run fifth and never looked back. The Hawks added two more in the sixth and capped the scoring with a five-run seventh to pull away.
Oneonta managed just four hits in the contest but scratched across a run in the sixth inning. Sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) to account for the Red Dragons' lone run.
Sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and senior Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) each added a hit, while Jacoby finished 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk. On the mound, sophomore Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) took the loss, allowing four runs over 4.1 innings, while the bullpen combined to surrender seven runs.
Game 2: New Paltz 10, Oneonta 3
Oneonta showed more offensive life with 12 hits, but could not keep pace with a potent New Paltz lineup.
The Hawks scored in each of the first, second, and fourth innings before breaking the game open with a two-run fifth and a decisive four-run seventh. They added a final insurance run in the ninth.
Oneonta got on the board in the second inning on an RBI single by senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) and added runs in the sixth and seventh. Junior Sean Clinton (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) drove in a pair with two sacrifice flies, while Monserrat led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and three stolen bases. Rowe also had a multi-hit game, and Loia chipped in an RBI.
Freshman Caleb Nelson (Granville, NY/Granville Jr./Sr.) started and took the loss, allowing three runs over three innings. The bullpen struggled to contain New Paltz's momentum, particularly during the seventh inning rally that put the game out of reach.
Oneonta will look to bounce back as SUNYAC play continues at Canton this weekend.
